How does your game meet GBJam's theme
while not the gold per se, it's copper wire, lead with teeth marks on it and buried in wet swamp muck, running on gb, you run as a real post-digital researcher L.Samokhvalov and his late father Arseniy, including at the breaking points of history, like December 1991, Viskuli Manor, or Swietokrzyskie mountains at the time of bioelectronic experiments of W.Sedlak. Pry opening frozen boxes, scraping grime off severed cables, tuning into 89hz hums whiole making sounds of music with every step, and some sounds dont even shut off when huge empires fall apart. old gold here is in diy scraphunting in the dirt of primordeal forests and legend-heavy mountains, digging up buried alterantive technologies just to see if any of them still work and have a real effect here, besises the space of the game itself.

this is, indeed, a walking music simulator

I'm sorry, but I didn't understand anything about this game. I'm stuck on the first screen, I tried interacting with everything but it only prints weird text which I absolutely can't understand.

Due to a bug, the position of the character on screen is located one scare below its position in the physics interaction, which only added to my confusion.

I'll have to review it using only what I saw, which is not much, but I'd be glad to come back to it if anyone has a tip on how to get past the first screen.

The fact it is an actual GB rom is fantastic, so I'd like to give it a chance.

as far as we've tried, here is the exact way to get past the first screen (Viskuli Manor exterior):, 1. The Core Mechanicm press select button: Pressing SELECT cycles your active tool. at the start, you have 2 in this case: Bare Hands and the Signal Meter. then 2, climb the Ladder (Left side): w. Hands selected, face the iron ladder standing in the snow (near the left signpost) and press A. You'll climb one rung and hear the signal rise above the snow.

3. Tune into the Wire (Right side): Walk over to the black wire lying in the snow (between the field scrambler box and the green orb). then press SELECT to switch to the Signal Meter, then face the wire and press A. this reads the 12-07-91 frequency alright

4. Exit East: Once both tasks are done (ladder climbed + wire signal heard), the procedure lock releases. Walk straight into the opening on the far right edge of the screen to enter the Forest which is a kind of next level, where... well.. new puzzles await

the game itself seems to be based on  https://www.academia.edu/143721243/%D0%9B%D0%B8%D0%BD%D0%B3%D0%B2%D0%BE%D0%BF%D0...  (there is a shorter retelling of this research in English, https://medium.com/@lithuanian/the-ladder-between-centuries-how-a-17th-century-p... )

Thank you so much for giving the ROM a shot and for taking the time to write in quite a lot of detail!

...
regarding the physics: yes, the player sprite is 16 pixels (2 tiles) high, and the interaction coordinate is anchored to the character's head/upper tile rather than their feet. for us, at least for now, those are technical constraints of GB. so, if you line up by your feet, the interaction check can miss by one tile. Aiming with your upper body will make interactions trigger reliably

quick tip for the rest of the game: whenever an object says "hands find nothing" or gives erratic readings, you can press SELECT to try another instrument. Later on, you'll unlock additional tools (a Polarized Viewer for hidden microfilm/ink, and an Alignment Anchor for rotary mechanisms)

hope this helps you dive into the rest of the cartridge! we see that the colleague, bulbacon, has just added a tip on how to pass the first screen. let me know how the rest of the run goes.

Jam Host (1 edit)

Hi, in your description you seem to state this game is also for DS and 3DS and calling it the Gameboy edition as if there are other editions. Can you please clarify what you meant by that? Also some of your pictures appear to use fonts that suggest the game is above 160x144 as well as being photos of places.

Hello Traslo, thanks for your attention and for hosting such a jam. This is mainly a Gameboy game that works on gameboy, but, by proxy, does work on our DSi via sd card and TWiLight Menu++  for example. It has gb file here, as well as windows exe file and playable in browser. Most images here are for illustration purpouses and come from the historical docs this is inspired by as well as the 'maps' or ideas of what Lestvica: Marrows is. The game itself is not as hi res as some of the images may suggest. Would be happy to answer other questions, if there would be any
