Hey! 👋

We're currently looking for people interested in joining the development of Screenlings Quest, an original 2D gacha RPG being developed in Unity.

📺 What is Screenlings Quest?

Screenlings Quest is a story-driven gacha game set in a world inhabited by creatures called Screenlings — strange digital beings inspired by screens, signals, devices and technology.

The game will feature a growing cast of collectible characters, each with their own designs, personalities and abilities. Players will build teams, progress through the story, fight enemies and bosses, unlock new areas and summon new Screenlings.

We're still early in development, so people joining now will also have the chance to help shape the game as it grows.

👀 Who are we looking for?

We're especially interested in:

  • 🎨 2D Character Artists – character designs, expressions, enemies, bosses, etc.
  • 🎞️ 2D Animators – character, combat, UI and effect animations.
  • 💻 Unity / C# Developers – combat systems, UI, gacha systems, progression and general gameplay programming.
  • ✨ VFX Artists – abilities, ultimates, summons and other effects.
  • 🖥️ UI/UX Designers – menus, character screens, combat HUDs and other interfaces.
  • 🎵 Sound Designers / Composers – music, ambience and sound effects.
  • 📝 Writers / Worldbuilders – characters, dialogue, quests and lore.

You don't need to be a professional. If you're learning and think you can contribute, you're welcome to contact us too!

💰 Payment

This is currently an unpaid hobby/indie project.

We don't want to pretend otherwise or promise money that doesn't exist yet.

However, the goal is to eventually release Screenlings Quest publicly. If the game reaches a point where it generates revenue or receives funding, we would like contributors who continue working with the project to be compensated through an agreed payment/revenue arrangement.

The exact system would be discussed properly with the team before that happens.

For now, please only join if you're okay with contributing voluntarily while the project is in early development.

🎮 Development

Engine: Unity Language: C# Genre: 2D Gacha RPG / Adventure Current stage: Early development Payment: Unpaid for now / possible paid or revenue-based work later

We're mainly looking for people who enjoy making games, want to build something interesting together and are comfortable working with a small indie team.

If Screenlings Quest sounds like something you'd enjoy working on, send us a message with what role you're interested in and, if you have one, some examples of your previous work.

Thanks for reading! 📺✨

Hello,

Hope you are doing well,

I am a mainly a character artist, however I would love to develop more of my skills in creating art for games. I am mostly draw in an anime style although I am content with changing my style a little for game. I have a rendered style, but I can do cell shading too. I would love to aid with character art and UI design.

Here is were you can find me:

Hey Makaly! Thanks for reaching out! I checked out your work and I really like it!

For Screenlings Quest, we're aiming for a stylized 2D art style with strong silhouettes, exaggerated proportions, simple but expressive faces, clean shapes, and characters that are easy to recognize from their designs.

I know your usual style is more anime-inspired, but since you mentioned that you're comfortable adapting your style and working with cel shading, I'd really like to see how your art could fit the direction we're going for.

I'm also really interested in your UI design skills, since Screenlings Quest will have quite a lot of character menus, summoning screens, combat UI and other interfaces.

I'd definitely be interested in having you join the project if you're still interested! We can talk more about the characters, art direction and what you'd like to work on :)

That sounds great,

thank so much for letting me join I really appreciate the opportunity

You’re very welcome! I’m really happy to have you on the team :)

We can keep in contact and start sharing more about the project, characters, art direction and what we’re currently working on.

Hey! Thanks for reaching out! I checked out your portfolio and I really like your work and the different styles you can do!

For Screenlings Quest, we're aiming for a very stylized 2D art style with strong silhouettes, exaggerated proportions, simple but expressive faces, clean shapes, and characters that are easy to recognize just from their design.

I think your style could work really well for that direction, especially since you seem comfortable experimenting with different styles!

I'd definitely be interested in having you join as a 2D character artist if you're still interested! We can talk more about the characters, world and art direction from there :)

def still interested! do you got a discord? we can continue discussing there!

Absolutely! Glad you're still interested :)

My Discord is cryofriend

Feel free to add me and we can continue talking there! I can show you more about Screenlings Quest, the characters, the art direction and what we currently have planned.

Looking forward to working with you! :)

Hi Cryo,

I'm new on itch.io, so don’t have any video game writing credits and have actually never written a video game. Great candidate, right? But hear me out! I'm on here to change that!

I've primarily written screenplays, of which three are in various stages of consideration/development, so my fingers, toes and other extremities are being crossed vigorously.  Rejection, however, isn’t knew. Currently, I’m actually in the postproduction phase of my own little film project, which has been an interesting journey. I've also written a number of short stories which are being ushered off to various competitions and publishers as my uncoordinated sausage fingers extract this reply from my shattered keyboard and, so, are in various states of limbo. But that' a separate and often disheartening struggle altogether.

So, yeh, I’m your typical writer; i.e. thus far unsuccessful. Basically, what I'm trying to say is, you are not getting Earnest Hemmingway here, let’s be honest.  Actually, in all my time writing it's never actually occurred to me to attempt any kind of narrative design or writing for video games at all, which is bizarre because I love video games and narrative design. So again, I want to change that.

I can bring your characters, their dialogue and your worlds to life through iteration, enthusiasm and passion as well as a firm grasp of narrative structure and technique.

I bring the following skills to the table:

  •   Scripts: either via traditional scriptwriting software or via Twine and INK (which I am becoming more and more proficient in the longer I bang my head against then them; especially INK)
  • Narrative design, outlining and storyboarding, (so: Characterisation, structure, world building and dialogue)
  • Proofreading and editing existing work.
  • Experience collaborating with other disciplines in a creative pipeline.
  • Cinematic postproduction work via Davinci Resolve (useful for cutscenes and promotional material like trailers etc.)
  • Punctuality and commitment.
  • A lifelong passion for video games.

I can begin writing for you on Monday and have something compelling to show you by Tuesday.

Hey! Thanks for reaching out — I really enjoyed reading your message!

Don’t worry about not having previous video game writing credits. Screenlings Quest is still early in development, so we’re completely open to people who want to gain experience and build something with us.

We already have the core concept, some characters and parts of the world/lore planned, but there’s still a lot to develop. We’d especially love help with character dialogue, story chapters, worldbuilding, quests and narrative structure while keeping the existing direction and characters consistent.

Your screenplay experience could also be really useful for cutscenes and more cinematic story moments, and the DaVinci Resolve experience could definitely come in handy later for trailers and promotional material.

I’d be happy to have you join the project if you’re still interested! There’s no need to rush something out by Tuesday either — I’d rather we first show you what we already have and talk about the direction of the game, then build from there :)

Do you have a design document or story outline yet? If so, send it my way and I can go from there. If not, if you give me details, theme, tone, that kind of stuff, I can prepare something. I know its a gotcha game, but is it an RPG? Open world? Quests? Puzzle? Item descriptions? One protagonists or two? Etc.

Hey! We don't have a fully organized design document yet, but we already have quite a bit of the game, world and characters planned out, so I can put everything together for you.

The basic structure is a story-driven 2D gacha RPG. It isn't an open-world game. The player progresses through story chapters and stages, builds a team of Screenlings, fights enemies and bosses, unlocks new areas and characters, and experiences story scenes between/around stages.

Screenlings are digital beings inspired by screens, signals, devices and technology, but they're their own living characters with personalities, relationships and a society. Media City is one of the central locations.

We already have several characters and some important lore concepts planned, including Smarix, Dialyn, Cache, Patch, Ringer 33, Chromara, the Ancestors/Ancients and the Forgotten. We also have an early direction for Chapter 1, currently called “The Voice Below.”

Combat is planned around teams of 4 Screenlings with normal attacks, individual skills and ultimates, with stages containing waves of enemies and larger multi-phase bosses.

The tone should be colorful, expressive and funny during normal character interactions, but the story can become mysterious, emotional and more serious when dealing with old technology, forgotten Screenlings and the deeper history of the world. We don't want it to feel constantly dark or constantly comedic.

There's still a lot that isn't locked down yet, especially the exact story structure, quests, dialogue and how the chapters connect, which is where we'd love your help.

Rather than having you start completely from scratch, I think the best approach would be for me to put together everything that's already established into a design/story document first. Then we can build and expand the narrative together from there.

Please do. If you can do that, I'll put to together some ideas and bounce them back to you to see what you think. I can go over already written work too if you like; proofread, edit etc. I can structure chapter one for you in a 3 act structure with plot points and character arcs  etc. Or we can build each mission as it's own standalone 3 act structure and them string them together sequentially to make an overarching story.

... Anyways, standing by :)

Yeah! I’m definitely interested! I don’t have anything super specific in mind for the music just yet, since the project is still developing, but I’d love to hear some of your previous work and get a feel for your style.

Feel free to send over your portfolio or anything you’ve made that you think would fit! :)

Hi! Thanks for reaching out! :)

I’d definitely be interested in hearing more of your work. Screenlings Quest is a story-driven 2D gacha RPG being developed in Unity, centered around digital creatures called Screenlings.

We’re planning a fairly varied soundtrack, including area/exploration themes, character themes, battle and boss music, as well as more atmospheric and cinematic tracks for important story moments. Since the world is heavily inspired by screens, signals and technology, we’d also like the soundtrack and sound design to have a recognizable digital identity of its own.

Your experience with sound design, Unity, Wwise and FMOD is especially interesting, since we’d eventually like the audio to react dynamically to gameplay rather than only having static music tracks.

I’d love to check out your portfolio or some examples of your previous work!

I’ll also add you on Discord so we can talk more there :)

Thanks!

Hi! Unity/C# developer here, interested in joining Screenlings Quest. I'm a professional software engineer and hobbyist Unity dev (personal prototypes, no shipped commercial game yet). I can contribute to combat systems, UI, gacha systems, or progression, and I'm happy to learn whatever the project needs.
