I very much enjoyed the art style of this game. I agree with other commenters that hit feedback would make a big difference - and maybe some temporary invulnerability after getting hit, since the bird enemies seem to take a lot of your health at once

I really like the proportional jester sprites and animations! It's very endearing. The sprites in general are well done. I particularly liked how creepy the dryad was.

I was going to mention feedback for hitting enemies, but I see on another comment that you already want to add it in!

I love so much that you made a gameboy style manual for this!

The Fool’s Gold/jester idea ties the theme into the character and relics cleanly.

The jester design and animations are great, the hand-drawn map gives it a 90s adventure feel. Sound design is also very good. Charming platformer with tons of Game Boy soul.

I wasn't really able to get past the first level, it's really difficult. Some way to restore health, or reducing the enemy health would go a long way. That being said, games being bery difficult was a staple of that era. The visuals and sfx look really good too!

Developer

There is a way to restore health, but it's tied to RNG. Once the Jam is done, I'll be dramatically increasing the chances of an enemy dropping health! Thanks for playing and for the comment!

Really nice job! It was just a bit hard to hit the enemies sometimes, as the hit/hurtboxes weren't very clear to me...

Developer (1 edit)

Having enemies flicker when hit will be one of the first changes I make to the game when the voting period is over, so hopefully that will help. Thanks for playing and for your feedback!

I gave retro GB vibes but that first level was brutal.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Yeah, I wish I had scaled the difficulty back for the purposes of this jam, but the pieces just fell together in a way that naturally lent themselves to a decent challenge, and by that point, it was already basically time to submit.

After the voting period ends, the first change I'll be making will be increasing invulnerability frames, increasing the Fool's attack size,  and making it more clear when enemies are hit.

Would you mind letting me how far you got so I can get an idea of where difficulty needs tweaking?

This game makes me think a lot of old games and I quite like the jester art and animation, so super well done on that part! Really like the theme interpretation too. Definitely a bit too hard for me (was very easy to die and sometimes a bit too hard to hit enemies, but can also be a skill issue) and sadly the viewport seemed a bit of which only made the background appear in part of the screen for me, but I think it definitely has potential and would be fun to see more levels, super well done!

Hey! Thank you for the compliments and the feedback!

It's a shame about the viewport issue- I just found out yesterday that can happen, and I suspect it's a Mac issue, which I wasn't able to test due to not actually owning one (and also, not really thinking that the browser version would differ in such a way based on OS). Would you mind letting me know what OS and browser you played on?

I also wonder if part of the difficulty in seeing enemies is due to that bug- if it was working properly, you'd only see the section of the screen that has the background, which would fill up the entire 800 x 720 viewport.  That said, I do think enemy clarity is something  I could work on regardless.

As for the difficulty, I definitely wish I would have made a more accessible game for the purposes of this Jam! I think that was partially informed by using  Castlevania as inspiration. You live and you learn I guess!

Anyway, thanks again for playing and for your thoughtful comment! :)

Of course, I use Windows and the Firefox browser, I could try out some things for you to see if the issue still persists if I for example use a different browser? :)

I think definitely that plays a big role in the difficulty, but I feel you on bugs when it comes to gamejams, it's so little time to actually properly iron everything out. And I do definitely see that inspiration, also old games were notoriously hard, so in that way you are actually very accurate hahah!

And you're welcome :) lmk if I can help with any testing

Developer(+1)

Oh, very interesting! I've tested  the gamepage on Firefox, Chrome, and Edge on my Windows system, and it works fine for me. Unfortunately it seems like the issue won't be as straightforward to diagnose as I had hoped. I'll mess around with it later when I have the time, and I might reach out to get some additional info that might help! Thank you so much! :)

Weird then, and yeah definitely let me know if I can help in any way!

Developer

Hey, I'm reaching out again to see if you'd still be willing to help me out fixing the viewport issue! No worries if not, but if you wouldn't mind, could you:

Download the Windows .zip and see if the viewport works as a downloadable.

Access the following link and see if the viewport works there:

https://eastshrine.itch.io/foolsgoldviewportfix?secret=JDGMkiwL8uEdCVDKGrEoNd6qc

Based on what you see there, hopefully I should be able to figure out what the issue is. Thank you so much!

The jester's design is well made.  Sound effects fit the setting.  classic platformer, good work :)

Developer

I'm glad you liked the design, and thanks for playing!

Nice pun to hang the whole game on, fools gold as the name for the relics and a jester sent to fetch them. and the hand drawn world map naming each region and the artifact waiting in it shows the whole run at a glance. nice job

Developer

I'm really happy about the story I landed on for the game, so I'm glad you liked it! Thanks for playing!
