You can tell something is terribly wrong on the ship in the later parts of Lefevon's entries (even though he doesn't pick up on it), even before he really loses it. I did pick up on the meals taking longer to be prepared and thought 'oh they're eating each other aren't they', reached the middle of Iliya's personal journal and went 'oh yuuup they sure are'. Iliya's entries in the captain's log versus his actual personal journal are such a contrast. I like how unreliable everything is in this, even if Iliya's recollections of ship life seem more grounded than Lefevon. This is just a really good book and the formatting enhances it, it has that crunchy ass university pdf formatting complete with discussion questions but it's a full blown epistolary novel, complete with unsolved mysteries. I like that this is set in a world not our own and all the rich hints at it but it feels like something that happened here on Earth. Reminded me a bit of reading about the Franklin Expedition as a child.

you've probably seen it already but i do recommend checking out diet of worms, which takes place in the same universe. i do have other ideas for stuff i want to do with ousenta, but i've got some other stuff i want to mess around with first. thank you for the lovely comment!
