How does your game tie into the extra theme (optional)
Every dog in Guard Dog is part of a family line. When your dog falls defending the flock, it's buried in the row of graves behind the barn, and its pup takes over the watch. The pup gets its parent's coat, and every upgrade you've earned passes down to it. Each night adds another dog to the family tree. Even the monsters are rooted: turnips, potatoes and rutabagas crawl out of the fields after dark.

I really love your concept, playing as the dog with the goal of defending the flock is really fun and engaging! You've put a lot of thought, creativity, and effort into it

I think it is a really good game.

-I liked how you used the optional extre theme of roots. The fact you added the dogs generations mechanics I think is fun and it makes sense with how dogs lived in farms and the where buried back in  the barn.

- The pixel art is great, not too simple, not too complex. My fav was the dog little animations when it runs and bites.

I would have enjoyed you added some brackground music to make it more cosy and mesmerizing. I could play this game unironically not only to rate it. Good job :)

Really fun to play and not easy at all! I would play this for hours. Great job!

Wow! Such a good game! Impresive! The enemys feel really polished, the upgrades are balanced and the art is really good! Congrats on making such a polished experience!

I especially liked that the farm animals didn't just  run away, but that they had different "abilities", like the horses kick or that the turtle hides and acts as a sort of distracting tank!

Thank you so much! Animal behavior is one of my favorite things to program so it makes me really happy that it is appreciated! :D

Neat game! I thought the progression scaled well in the beginning and I liked how that the meat that spawns outside is like risk/reward for the amount you get vs not being able to protect the animals. As you do get more animals to protect though, I found it hard to see where the monsters attacking were, so maybe having the monsters highlighted would help with that.

This is a great suggestion i will need to add it after the jam ends

I'm not good at this game, but I really love the retro esthetics, so cool made!

Such a fun idea and executing in such a short time well done !

This really is excellent, it feels like it's just a little bit away from being a fully-fledged and completed game!

Though honestly I don't think I was ever really in danger of dying as the dog, but maybe I just hadn't played enough yet

Developer

Hi, thank you so much for playing and for the kind words! :D

That's fair, the early waves are pretty forgiving for the dog. My idea was that early on the real danger is losing livestock, and later on it's dying. Enemies get stronger as the waves progress, and there are 2 upgrades in the barn that ramp up the difficulty (more enemies and stronger enemies) if you want more of a challenge. I should make those easier to find after the jam, thanks for pointing it out!

This game was very fun and felt retro. It reminded me of playing games on my gameboy color as a kid. One thing that almost got me is that I didn't know how to start the game initially maybe putting a exclamation mark over the farmers head would be a good indication that you can talk to him. I don't know why in my mind I didn't think to try to interact with the farmer. Overall really good game!

Developer

Thank you so much for playing, and the Game Boy Color comparison totally made my day!

This is a really good point. When I watched friends play, none of them read the signposts (where I put the tutorials) either. I was thinking of having a message like "Read the signs!" fade in when you first launch the game, and an exclamation mark over the farmer is a great idea too!

Thanks again for taking the time to play and comment!

Very impressive to have done this within the weekend! Even with premade assets you've got so much content packed in in terms of number of upgrades and different entities 😯 Was this actually a solo project?

Developer (2 edits)

Thank you! Not truely solo i used purchased assets for the sounds (see credits section on the page) and as you said i use premade art.the only new art was the veggie enemies and the banner.  So really most of the project was just programming animal ai and behaviors, which is something i have done for a loooot of projects that never saw the light of day lol. also I may have stayed up a couple of nights and days and did nothing else... lol

Nice concept and nice art! I enjoyed playing a dog!

The premise almost lost me since the dog was in danger. But I had a shocking amount of fun playing and felt really protective of my flock! I also liked the very clear feedback of the meat as the currency system to improve my skills, it felt very satisfying. The sheer diversity of enemies was fun too - though I absolutely lost chickens to bats at first, not realizing they were a danger until it was too late. Well done!

Great game! One small thing is I don't reallly get the cozy fall vibes of it haha

Super fun though great job much better than mine :p

Such a well put together game. Aesthetic was so fun and lighthearted but slightly spooky. I felt so much ownership over my flock. Lost track of time playing it with my friends.

Definitely a lot of fun! Noticed sometimes that, especially when moving, the bite collisions felt off, and the Bark felt a little inconsistent - but these are little tweaks in something that feels like it should have taken a lot longer to make, excellent work!

If I had two complaints it'd be that going for the bonus meat never felt worth it to me, but that's just a balancing thing - and that the toggle to run took a bit to get the timing and feel right about

Hope you'll give our submission a try!
