Description
I decided to take a slightly more traditional approach, using commonly used Japanese instruments such as the shakuhachi and Japanese mandolin, along with percussion made by tapping on my ukulele. I also used my usual orchestral template, with strings and woodwinds to complete the sound palette.
The composition starts slowly in E, using the Insen pentatonic scale, with the chords and melodic elements following the notes E – F – A – B – D – E.
Midway through the track, I slightly changed the mode to the Hirajōshi pentatonic scale, replacing B with C.
I also incorporated a 20 bar semitone drop to change the key from E to E♭. This creates a moment of microtonal dissonance, as every instrument including the gamelan, piano, strings, woodwinds, and synth pads slowly drops in pitch.
At the last minute, I decided to add some rowing sound design to the track as a bit of ear candy. This was created in Wwise using 10 different rowing sounds, which I arranged into a rhythmic loop using various modulations and randomized elements.
I think most of the track consists of long drones, especially during sections where I don't change the chords.

Nothing else to say really
I don't have much to say here that anyone here hasn't already said.
I enjoy the accuracy of the scales and instruments used (both the Japanese and Indonesian ones), as well as the mixing and attention to dynamics and atmosphere, the microtonal tuning as well. This track definitely sets out what it wanted to accomplish.
I could easily imagine this piece being part of a AAA Feudal Japanese video game and I wouldn't question it.
(if i could offer any feedback, it's almost a bit too conservative of a piece IMO... maybe try something a bit more experimental and risky.
You are a skilled composer, and I think you can do better, so why impose a safety net on your compositions? Take more risks, and blow me away next time.)
This is stunning. Crazy good.
Really lovely piece! Nice work
A little aggressive for the theme but very high quality.
Hats off.
I love it! Really great work you've put together. It has a mysterious quality that fascinates me, and the sound selection is unbeatable. On top of that, it sounds amazing! Thanks for such a great job, congratulations!!!
There is a lot I like here! The microtonal dissonance from the gamelan (especially!) and everything else slowly sinking in pitch is genuinely unsettling in the best way, and it gives the track a real sense of the uncanny. I get Creepypasta-lore vibes in the best way possible lol.
Great submission!
This is really a great track
The way the track developed is actually unique, it didn't lose the vibe through all the piece.
I can't say much it is well done.
Great work man.
This is one of the best tracks I’ve heard in the entire jam so far. It’s very rich and complex. My only criticism concerns the mix: I think you went a bit overboard with the bass EQ and the volume of some effects, which made the track feel a little busy. But other than that, it’s excellent work, truly professional.
You really sculpted an atmosphere with this track. I love the variety of timbres, textures, and musical ideas you were able to weave into the composition. Great job!
Foxhyode, you have done it again. This track is so awesome. I love every part of it. The Japanese tone and style fit so well together and those instruments were just breathtaking! The whole thing was breathtaking! The ambiance is soothing, the drones are epic, and just the whole feel and sound of the track work so well. I can't even add any feedback, lol. It is clean, clear and on point with the theme.
Thanks for sharing! I really enjoyed listening.
Super sick piece, I love the subdivision piano part on the second half, that intro with the echoing strumming, the wild flutes screaming, the percussive string slaps and the accenting SFX. Absolute masterclass.
Wow sounds awesome!! You did a great job of developing the piece enough to create something really interesting without losing ambient qualities. The pitch down section is super disorienting and adds a lot to the mood. Nice work!
This is incredible! all I know is I need to purchase this flute immediately lol. Great layered sound and I loved your part two, very cool.
You are in luck they are free XD

You've outdone yourself!
This is so fantastic.
I have no feedback. I closed my eyes and went on a journey, through a dark, foggy pond, through dark reeds. I wish I could upload the mental imagery this gave me.
I really like the use of Unique Textures you used, alsong with the Bells & Pitchshifting Flutes. Very good composition!
