Description
Mystic Lake, an attempt at an ambient track according to the parameters. 4 Japanese modes all in D, Miyako-bushi, Ritsu, Insen and Iwato. 2 drones played throughout, changing for each mode, D - Miyako-bushi, A - Ritsu, D - Insen, G - Iwato. It was a fun challenge, my first game jam and attempting things I have never done before such as ambient music or Japanese modes.

Solid track in terms of correlating it to the theme especially.

Great job! :)

I think for useful feedback, I would try to mix things more in space in terms of near/far, as well as L/R delay (i.e. it takes a different amount of time for sound to reach the right ear than the left, and this has a huge impact on sound clarity perception)

What a great representation of ambient music you have here! It fits the theme very well, plus the Japanese modes and instruments really added that much more depth to it. Great solid work here. I love it. Though, some variations would be good, maybe?

Ooh nice piece, it reminds me of Iroh's Tsungi Horn from Avatar the Last Air Bender. I like how the instruments kind of sound/feel like a dialogue between two people.

Super representative of the theme or what I imagined the theme would be in my head, I love the instrumentations, the vibe, the ambiance, only thing I would try is get some variations going somewhere else, it could be subtle or not but just some small changes to get us off the hook. Good job !

Great blend of sound effects and instruments. The sound effects could be a bit more present though. The whole mix is rather dry and could use a nice wash of reverb. Overall solid job! I love the instrument choices, the modes you used, and the overall composition.

No streaming service just the Youtube video.

Edit: Ah I see it is only embedded on the project page. Link added on this page now. Sorry, first timer here.

It's all good! This is a great piece. It combines a lot of what I talked about in other folks submissions about the balance between ambient noise (field recordings, ect) and ambience in musicality (drones, pads, ect)

Very well mixed, very well composed.

Fantastic first time entry.

Congrats on the first jam! Super solid first entry. I think you nailed the theme and captured the atmosphere perfectly. I also tried working within the Japanese modes for my submission and it was way more difficult than I anticipated, props to you for modulating between so many. I particularly enjoyed the open call and response nature of the track with the flute and strings.

I agree with you about the difficulty of the modes, it took me quite a bit to feel them out and even then playing on the koto and shakuhachi were an added challenge as well because I have never played them before and the tones are very unique. Thank you for your comment and glad you enjoyed it!

I like it! Definitely fits the theme, I like the use of the different Japanese modes. The melody is a little rambling, which works for ambient, but for my tastes I think you could've developed it a little more or put a little more structure into the composition without losing the ambient qualities. Overall great work!

Thank you for your comment and glad you liked it! I definitely wanted to revisit the melody and pare it back but it had already taken so much time to get to that point that I needed to polish and submit it. Attempting this ambient track was really eye opening for me as I already prefer to play slowly and chill but ambient requests much more space than I'm familiar with. I feel like I learned alot from these parameters.

This Soundtrack has some pretty interesting things in it... Did you use an Ondes Martenot and/or a Mixtur-Trautonium in this? Sounds like you did... I like how unique this Ambient song is. Pretty good composition!

Developer (1 edit)

Oooh I love the Ondes Martenot but was not aware of the Mixtur-Trautonium. I did not use those however I can hear how those might be heard in the drones. I used Pigments from Arturia for the drones, selecting some presets and then tinkering around with them until finding the feeling I was looking for. Thanks for your comment, it was a fun experience overall!

Interesting! I think I tried Pigments once, but couldn't figure out if it was free or not or something like that... I don't remember, since It's been a very long time since I tried out Arturia's Virtual Instruments. For some background with me & the Ondes Martenot & Mixtur-Trautonium, ever since I heard this really haunting, peaceful flute-like sound in some of my favorite songs (Emerald Embers & Barrow Mounds, to be exact, both from the same Artist, Scarecrowman) that also was like a Theremin but Not, it sounded too nice. I tried to recreate it, but I couldn't figure out how. Just a few months ago, I did manage to talk to the Artist about it, and they said that it was a Custom Tone Patch they made to sound like an Ondes Martenot. A few months after that, I managed to find a Reaktor Ensamble/Library of an Ondes Martenot. Since I already had Reaktor (And it's actually the first paid Virtual Instrument I acquired, as a gift), I've used that thing when I can Since! I used that same Reaktor Ensamble in the last song of my Album I submitted to the Impressions Composing Jam #4. Anyways, for the Mixtur-Trautonium, I also did not know that such a thing existed until very recently. (Not even a week from now) I found out about it when I got suggested a Video of one of those things on YouTube. I like calling them a "Ondes Martenot Organ," despite it being a very different Instrument compared to the Ondes Martenot. They do look like a Hybrid in between a Modular Synth, 2-Keyboard Pipe Organ, and have Ribbon Keyboards that look similar to the Ondes Martenot Keyboard, except without the normal Keys of an Ondes Martenot. Anyways, I always find it fun to take part of these Challenges, and you're welcome for my Comments!
