The game also features a tutorial when entering the game, allowing you to learn of the games mechanics and putting them in practice immediatly!

Controls:

The polish on display is super impressive. Evidently not your first rodeo.
(The way the board ripples is a super neat detail.)

I initially really didn't expect that I'd actually have to know how to play chess for this. I was very confident that simply knowing how to move the pieces would be enough.
I think the only way I got as far as I did is because I went all in on stealing my opponent's pieces.

I feel like I can't quite appreciate how much being able to modify your pieces shakes up strategy and meta. Would love to watch someone who knows what they're doing play this.

I do think I ran into a couple trinkets and pieces that don't appear to be working as described. Despite repeated attempts and experimenting, the modified rook didn't appear to bring any new adventages to the table and just ended up gimping me every time. Not sure what I might have overlooked.

I think the romance mini game is a bit lacking and messing up your timing feels overly punishing.
That part didn't quite come together for me.
Dialogue is well written though.

All in all I rank this very near the top of everything I've played during this jam.

Hey! Thank you for your feedback!

For this jam, we opted to tune down the difficulty, so people new to chess can enjoy the game and appreciate all the content it has without needing to learn chess in a week.

After some playtesting, we've noticed that the Juggernaut piece (rook variant) has some kind of bug in the code that makes it kind of rip off the player by not doing what its advertised to do. We are gonna fix this after the game jam period ends, and we hope to have everything bug free before trying to actually make it into a real game.

We have gotten many complaints alredy that the minigame feels "too hard" and "punishing", as missing a single timing will result in a failure dialogue. We give you our word, we are gonna try our best to make these minigames less repetitive, less punishing and more visible.

Love your game btw S2

So fun listening to the dialog. But this is too hard for me as i am not a chess player. I need more time, more that 10 minutes to finish a chess game. So i failed the TUTORIAL 4 times, lol. 3 of them because i didn't finish the game in 10 minutes.

One thing i like is this game is so polished in every aspect. I think all the music, sfx, text animation is so rock! I wish i have juice asset as good as yours. Thank you for the game! I like it so much although i cannot get pass the tutorial.

Developer

Thank you for your feedback! In the future, we plan on adding modifiable time control, allowing the player to select how much time they will have per turn (5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, etc.).

We've gotten a few cases of people that have never played chess before complaining about our game's current difficulty, we hope we can add more ways to manage that aswell.

The originality of the idea is easily a 12/10.

The side view feels a little unusual at first. But the relationship mechanics with the figures through minigames, along with the dialogue, are literally what I expected to see at this jam. Absolutely amazing.

I鈥檇 remove the possibility of a sector appearing at 9 o鈥檆lock (on the left), because it鈥檚 genuinely very difficult to react to, even with good reaction time and a high-refresh-rate monitor.
Definitely one of the best games I played at this jam

Developer

Thank you for your feedback! I can feel the struggle that it may be for new players to get used to the side view rather than the common chess top-down view. We've opted for a side view following one of our inspirations for this game, Mewgenics.

As for the minigame being too hard, i understand your struggle, we've seen in later playtestings that it was becoming an issue, but didnt have enough time to handle it. For now, the best way to help with that is getting a trinket, "Broken Metronome" slowing the heart cursor's speed down by 15%.

We hope to continue working on this game if we see that people actually like it a lot, and we will address all of the issues after the jam period ends.

Love your game and your artstyle btw! Hope to compete with you in the finals ;)

Hey! Thank you for your feedback! We where planning in adding difficulty modifiers, but that didn`t end up making into the final cut. I will be trying to play all jam games and give a fair rating and fair feedback from my experience, so i will definetly end up playing your game soon.

Developer

hey! Thank you so much! We are hoping that if this game gets enough recognition, we may actually make it a game and add lots of content, including all the scrapped content that didnt make it to this build. Cheers!
