Lots of good stuff in the Metroidvania. The graphics, especially the backgrounds, are awesome and provide a great sense of place. I enjoyed the boss fights and collecting the new skills. Unfortunately, the ending glitched out for me and the slime king was just stuck in a daze.

My only major complaint is that I was fighting the controls quite a bit. When there are multiple mid-air maneuvers or near a wall, it felt like a bit of a crapshoot which one would come out. A few of the challenges felt like they were too precise for what the controls could reasonably expect (boss bat fight and a couple of the wall climb sections come to mind).

Overall great entry and it is quite impressive the amount of content you got into a jam game!

Developer

thanks a lot, it has a few bugs that i already fixd, i'll update the rom today  so you all can play it without problems, and yeah maybe some places are a bit difficult to maneuver, but that's the point of advancing on the game, some places and enemies are gonna be harder to surpass or beat, again thanks a lot n_n

When there's three heart pickups before entering a castle, you know things are about to get real!

What a fantastic and complete game.

  • I loved how you let us get a glimpse of unreachable areas before they become reachable later in the game.
  • Lots of rewarding upgrades.
  • The bosses were interesting and different from each other, but they were not too hard, which is very good for a jam game (you can't expect people to spend hours on a single game).
  • The length of the game was much longer than expected, but I couldn't stop myself from playing. I managed to beat the slime king but couldn't continue from there.

You really hit all the right spots for a platformer/metroidvania.

Really well done!

thanks a lot for this comment, yeah it has some bugs that i couldnt fix before the time ended, today or tomorrow i'll update the game page and rom so you all can play an updated and fixed game, thanks a lot, and yeah it has an ending that sometimes it gets bloked by a bug n_n again thanks a lot n_n

Wow. There was a lot to this game!  The unlocks were cool and the level design played really well with them.  Adding shortcuts after boss fights so you dont have to back track is great and the game had a lot of gameboy feel.

It was a little tough to get started and the stop and go slow mo was really weird to get used to.  There were some inconsistencies with the graphics, where I couldn't easily tell if something would damage me or not (specifically the thorns and the mushrooms look similar, but one damages and the other doesn't) but then you have a mushroom boss that damages you even though you just taught the player to ignore mushrooms.  I also experienced a few bugs like others mentioned and a camera not moving issue after the mushroom fight (I killed myself and it fixed itself, so not a deal breaker thankfully)

This was my first metroidvania in the jam and it was a good time!  Nice job!

Developer

thanks a lot and yeah that version has a lot of bugs that i've already fixed on a newer vercion that i'll be updating as soon as the voting period finishes, thanks a lot for playing it n_n

There's a small lack of polish and some sound glitches with sound effects cutting off portions of ingame music until you use your attack again... but besides that this feels very much like a full length game with various bosses and upgrades. Bonus points for being an actual Gameboy game!

Developer(+1)

thanks a lot, as far as i know was the first game the musician worked on n_n none the less i'm glad you liked it n_n

Stellar game! It felt very authentically Game Boy, the environments were all very cool and felt distinct, and the music is awesome. I unfortunately got filtered after getting the parachute, I couldn't progress where (I assumed) I had to go (left of the mid-point of the tree) but maybe I missed another section I needed it for. But still I enjoyed the game a lot!

EDIT: I did want to mention I experienced a lot of lag at the first boss, and I think maybe the damageable walls had something to do with it because I encountered a bit of lag later on in the shroom section where there are also some damageable walls. Not a game breaker but it did make the first boss a bit easy.

Developer

you must climb the mountain outside the first cave to get the last skill, and yeah i noticed the lag, i've been clearing bugs here and there since the voting period started, but that i think i'll fix it in other way because it lags and is kinda pointless XD thanks

Took 2 people and more than an hour to complete the game...🤣 Maybe we're too bad at it. Even then, it's also because of how complete the game is, and a tiny bit because the next-to-last part is hidden and we were wandering around a bit too much. Actually pretty cool!

It has some bugs, though. E.g., near the end of the game we had the character randomly become completely invulnerable. The music was good but sometimes too intense. The graphics look fun. Gameboy soul, 10/10 as of what I can tell.

The end could have been a bit more rewarding. It felt a bit too static, even a bit confusing, I was not sure wether that was it.

Anyway, it's great work!

Developer(+1)

Did you got to the credits scene? Did you watched the ending cinematic? Anyway thanks a lot n.n and yeah the bugs, a lot of them are already fixed on newer roms that the jam wont let me update xD

Submitted(+1)

Oh, nothing happened after defeating the ...king potato/slime/rock? Sorry for my ignorance. But really, tried a bunch of stuff and no reaction, maybe it's part of the bug.

I'm glad you were able to fix most stuff for post-jam! Also, we played the web version, to be clearer.

Developer(+1)

That"s one of the bugs, if you die a few times before defeating him the price doesnt pop up and the ending doesnt start u.u, and its a slime king

Good little metroidvania game with interesting bosses! There are some bugs and little tuning the game could use, but nothing offensive or really deal breaker!

Graphics wise the game look good, nothing really to complain about and I was surprised a bit because this was my first actual gameboy gameboy game!

MSX and SFX are good, some boss themes a bit too repetitive/high pitched, but everything else is cool!

Overall neat little metroidvania style platformer!

Developer

again thanks a lot for taking your time n_n i'll try to upload a fixed and better version on the discord somewhere XD

Really impressive amount of game packed into a jam entry. The level design does a great job making you notice paths, then come back once you unlock the right ability.

The bosses, music, and art all had Game Boy soul.

Overall this was one of the more complete entries I played.

Developer

wow thanks a lot n_n i'll color it as soon i can n_n

A full metroidvania experience in a bite-sized jam game. Game design on point, especially by having the player pass by paths they needed powerups to access. Right after getting dash, I thought I could cross the gap to the west of the tree, only to find out no, not yet, and go searching for secrets. It was rewarding to find the cloud area. Music is well done and together with the gameplay and art style elevates the Game Boy Soul to full marks from me.

Not much to criticize. There are bugs but no showstoppers, and forgiving respawns help to mitigate their severity. Gold coins could serve a more interesting purpose.

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot, yeah it has bugs that where fixed but i cannot update it because voting period, on discord i updated the rom for them, thanks again n.n

Some of my favorite gameplay I've found in the jam so far, good work!

Developer

Thanks a lot n.n

Fun game, really enjoyed it!One small feedback: during the boss fights, the slow-motion effect lasts a bit long for me, and it makes the controls feel a bit sluggish. Maybe shortening it a little would keep the action feeling tighter?Nice work on the jam!

Developer

i need to optimize the script, but i cannot RN, also i lack the knoledge XD, but thanks, did you finished it?

Submitted(+1)

Yeah, I finished it - the boss was tough but fun. Good luck with the jam!

Developer

thanks a lot n_n

Submitted(+1)

definitely, the game boy feels are strong on this one!!

Developer

Tyanks a lot n.n

Submitted(+1)

Definitely gave me old school GameBoy vibes with the bosses and main character/abilities unlocked. The gold you got seemed under utilized but it was a nice way to help guide me where I need to go when playing! Nice work!

Developer

did you finished it? i mean it has a final boss and ending cinematics and everything XDD thanks a lot

Submitted(+1)

A bit buggy in places, I was invulnerable to hits for most of the game but I liked all the different bosses and the level design was well done!

Developer(+1)

like all of us i had only 10 days XD i couldnt fix all bugs, besides i never got that bug you say, none the less thanks for the feedback n_n

Submitted(+1)

Totally! I didn't mean to be harsh! I was also chasing bugs last minute XD

Submitted(+1)

I do like metroidvanias, music and art are excellent... I'm not sure if I completed everything or not however, but great presentation. If the double jump, glide section with the tree was optional or not I am not sure but I wasn't able to complete that. Still, very cool entry! Good job!

Developer

that section gets you to the final stage, you can dash as many times you want in the air and you can also jump from the air dash, you can do it, the game has an ending and everything

Submitted(+1)

Oh okay cool thanks, I guess I never found air dash, ill have to try again, thanks!

Developer

is in the cime of the mountain, over the cave of the mohai XD i have to add a sign or something XD
