Ok so, I arrived a bit late and thus had to play the submission on the alt page. I really like the idea! Looking forward to seeing it with a couple of the fixes and improvements! Great job!

Developer

Sorry for the upload issue :(, thank you for checking out the alt page! The original and post jam version should now be available on the actual jam game page now. Thank you for playing!

Great game and very inovative.

Could see a really great post jam version using the drag and drop code mechanincs.

Well done

Developer

Thank you for playing! Glad you liked it!

I managed to play the game! \o/
I can really appreciate the easy to use code blocks, thay are very nice! I can se this game being developed a bit further with more instructions and levels that make use of them. In the end I only needed the move and open door block. I didn't use the wait command much. The movement was a bit too slow, but with a little patience I got to level 4. Well done!

Developer (1 edit)

Glad you were able to play the game, so sorry for the upload mistake :(. I would have loved to have more instructions and levels but as typical with jam games i ran out of time. i didnt expect anyone to really use the wait block, it was kinda a late addition and was mainly used to for the read only bot on lvl 4. Thank you for playing my entry!

p.s. the post jam version is now on the jam entry page, still with selection between original and post jam version

Oh no, I arrived at the game too late! There is no game anymore! Maybe I can find your file by asking other people here? I will hold off on rating your game for now!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

im so sorry, i made a stupid mistake and deleted the file, i do have another draft page that i have a link to that include both the jam version and the fixed version, i can give you the link/make the page public if you would like, but i also understand if not because it could appear dishonest and i could have even changed something (i didnt but i know thats not verifiable) and i wouldnt want it to affect anything or cause any issues

edit: i did make the page public on my profile

Don't worry I've seen the game on other people stream, so I trust the process! X

I played the game! I checked the jam version first, and I saw the bug! Out of curiosity I did check the level 4 and 5, but I'll rate the game based on the jam submission <3

This was quite fun! I also love the fact that you used your own guinea pig as inspiration. Very cute art. I also think his would be a great way to teach algorithms and basic coding especially to kids. Took me some time to understand what to do and how but then it got fun. My main struggle is to know what number to put for the robot to move. This would be great in schools I think.

Developer

Thank You, glad you fund it fun! I would have loved to put my other guinea pig in as a second character as well but had no time to sadly :(. If this was to be made into a more full thing it would for sure be more geared to people with no coding experience and teaching the basics of coding!

Fun! Just some UI things would help a lot: knowing which line each bot was executing (esp after editing code I didn’t know what would happen next), some way to know how far things are, if the bots executed commands a bit faster

Developer

Yea, i would have liked to add more ui things as well, but as typical with jams i ran out of time. The movement and speed issues i thing would have been helped if i made it have grid based movement instead, but hindsight is 20/20. Thank you for playing, glad you found it fun!

Love the concept, but ran into several instances on Chrome where entities (robots and hamster) collided with different colored floor around the walls that seemed like it should have allowed movement. Wasn't able to finish the game, despite wanting to play more.

Developer

Yea, sorry about that, there were a couple of bugs with lvl4 and 5 that made them not able to be finished, lvl 4 had a collision issue and lvl 5 no bots could be programmed :(. Those bugs should be fix now in the post jam version though! Glad you like the concept, thank you for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Oh no more coding :) Never seen this in a game before having to code up the movement, clever idea. Great as a simple learning tool for basic coding for kids. Nicely done.

Developer

mwahaha, my evil plan for making jamers code more worked, lol. Glad you liked the idea, if made into a more full thing it would def be geared more to people with no coding experience to teach more of the basics of coding. Thank you for playing!

Didnt really vibe with it (but that a me issue) the game itself was great, Educational Value id given 10 if i could, honestly that level of problem solving and critical thinking is brilliant and innovate. for those 2 categories its the best ive played so far. It just wasn't for me personally

Developer

Thank you for playing! Completely understand, its not a game for everyone (infact there is no game for everyone), if made into a full game it would probly be more geared to people who have no programming experience to help with learning coding basics

very innovation game, very cool hero, little bit janky for m but still good!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Glad you liked it! it probly would have been a little less janky with a grid based movement system but hindsight is 20/20

Submitted(+1)

Clever idea with the coding, took some working out but got the hang of it now so scores highly on the innovation. The simple graphics style suits the game. Solid game with good replay value.

Developer

Thank you for playing my entry! Glad you enjoyed it!

Very cool and impressive! Amazing that you made s mini-scratch like this for the jam, well done!

Agree that it's a bit too slow. I didn't mind the distance thing. I played until the level where there's 2 robots and one of them can't be programmed and the other needs to go through.  After many tries I got the top robot through the first door, then I realized that level is totally broken since I couldn't even walk to the other door due to the shadow blocking the player on the corridor heh. Totally normal for a jam though. :) Anyway, great work!

Developer(+1)

Thank You! Glad you enjoyed it. I do think a lot of the speed/measuring issues would have been solved if i have went with a grid based movement system, but hindsight is 20/20. lvl 4 did have a collision bug making is not finishable, even lvl 5 was unfinishable due to a bug, but both of those should now be fixed in the post jam version!

Neat thematic spin on the programming games genre and scratch style blocks kept it very accessible. As others have commented I wish I had a better understaning of the distance units so I could make more educated attempts, and that it was a little faster, but I'm guessing this may have been partly a choice to enure you can get out of the way when the programs start running.

Developer

Thanks for playing, glad you liked it! I do agree that the movement is a big shortcoming. I think if i made it a grid based movement system if would have solved those issues (and prob have given me less issues making it as well, lol)

Submitted(+1)

I really like the idea of this. If I were to grumble about one thing is that it's hard to gauge how far a robot will go when given an instruction. I think if the robots' movement distance was set by tile instead of by pixel the programs would require less trial and error to get working.

Developer

Yea, that is a big shortcoming of my entry, i should have really made it a grid based movement system and that would have solved a lot of that issue. Thanks for playing

Submitted(+1)

I have to agree with some of the other comments, the move speed of the programmed drones was incredibly slow and reduced some of the fun it was to program them.

Developer

I agree with that as well, i should have made it a grid based movement system. Thanks of playing my entry!

Submitted(+1)

The code block system reminds me a lot of MIT scratch, which isn't a bad thing at all. I wish I knew the measure of units the robots would move, someway to debug the code more visually. The robots do move a little slow, but I do enjoy being a guinea pig.

Developer

Glad it reminds you of scratch, that is exactly what i was going for! I wish i knew the measure of units as well, i ended up being kinda arbitrary, i really should have made is grid based movement. Thank you for playing my entry!

Submitted(+1)

The idea is good and very educational. Tho it is hard to judge distance needed to enter in code blocks. Also it's a bit annoying that after code modification it does not reset to first code block and that kind of ruins whole algorithm. Also, block snapping was very weird in fullscreen :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing the game! I was gearing more at the educational aspect. I agree on the distance thing, i should have made it grid based movement. I think the code does reset to the first code block(its been a couple weeks now so i might be forgeting) but first is tries finishing the block its in so if its a long move instruction it will wait till its done. There was an issue with fullscreen that was only happening in the web build, should be fixed in the post jam version now though :)

Submitted(+1)

I agree with Temptica idea of a grid system, the pixel distances were pretty hard to judge. And speed as well - once you have an idea how to make the systems work, being able to control the speed would be great. I loved the idea - was very cool, good execution. Couldn't get very far as I kept getting stuck, will try again later. Nice work :)

Developer(+1)

Yea, i agree with the speed issue as well, it should have honestly been a grid based system. there was also a couple bugs with lvl 4 and 5 that made them unbeatable but those bugs should be fixed in the post jam version up now! Thank you for trying my game!

Submitted(+1)

The idea itself was very nice and so was the art. But the bots were waaay to slow. at least having a speed up button could be nice. Also I managed to get literally stuck in the S shaped puzzel: My Guinea pig couldn’t move up or down anymore. also using pixels for distance is very difficult. I’d use a clearer indication of size you can work with, maybe a grid system of some sort or 10 pixels (and show somewhere what the 10 pixels lenght is, like an atlas map thingy :D)

Developer

Thank you for trying my game! I do agree with the fact that they are a little slow, it should have been grid based which would have helped a lot. Sorry you got stuck on level 4, there was an unfortunate collision issues and lvl 5 was also bugged. those bugs should be fixed in the post jame version though so all the levels are now playable!
