I didn't really enjoy this one too much- the font was hard to read at times. Pretty backgrounds for sure.
Thanks for taking time to check it out. Sorry it wasn't very good, it was my first try at vn type game and my first game jam so there is a lot of room for improvements. But appreciate your comments never the less!
it's better than what I could make lol - I still appreciated the time I spent playing it. Ty for your effort
A few thoughts on this VN... I really loved the music and the artistic direction, they gave the game a clear sense of atmosphere (as well as being a treat to the eyes/ears!). The visuals have this really classic and nostalgic feeling.
I thought that you approached the writing with the right sort of literary style for the story that you were re-telling (and its setting), but because of its shortness (which I understand being attributable to the time restriction of a game jam context) it was difficult to feel too much attachment to the characters, though I fully believe that you'd be able to overcome that if given a little more time.
From a technical standpoint, I think that there are a couple of points where your decision trees either converge too soon or aren't going to the right option...? For example, when choosing (in short) 'I want a rose!' or 'I want a dress!' I selected the dress option, but the VN treated it as though I'd had Sophia say 'I want a rose!' (with the father remembering what Sophia wanted and taking a rose from the gardens, his 'crime'). This happened at another couple of points that I'd need to play through again to cite exactly. I liked the use of the timer, but I wonder whether there would be a way to have it so that the option with more text is given more space as a button (than an answer with less text) so that the fonts sizes can be balanced a bit better? The timer choices were good but trying to squint to read the long-form text very quickly was a bit rough.
I enjoyed it overall, and would love to see more in a similar vein in the future! Do you think that you'll push many updates post-jam?
Thank you for a very thoughtful message. I agreed with all of your points and while I was working on it I had the same thoughts. I come from more of a coding background so admittedly am pretty weak in the writing area, which is why I chose to use existing story instead of coming up with my own haha. I do want to take some writing courses and get better at it and hopefully I can make future games more compelling. I will go back and fix some smaller issues you and the other commenter left after the jam but because it was a learning experience for me and I have others ideas that I am excited to build I think I will leave it the way it is story structure wise. I took note about diverging storylines coming together too quickly and characters being a bit flat because I do think that will make the game more interesting since it is hinged on the story since it's a VN lol. Again thank you for taking your time to play and your feedback will definitely help make me become a better developer for my future projects!
Thank you so much for making such a lovely game, and good luck in the future! I hope that my comment didn't come across as too harsh - we (me and a teammate) really enjoyed playing it :) I could definitely see the coding side there, but I don’t think that you should feel too down on your writing either. It’s only going to go up from here, especially with that proactive attitude.
I’m really looking forward to see what you decide to do next. Do you have a particular concept that you’re excited to have a go at?
Oh no I didn't think it was harsh at all! I prefer people leave comments then play and not say anything cause then I can't learn from the experience. For my next idea, it is probably too ambitious for my skill level at the moment but my dream is to make like an RPG kind of like Dave the Diver. I love that game and the humor was right up my alley not to mention all the fun mini games to make each mechanic very unique and interesting. So I might just start practicing making small mini games to learn to develop the skills then maybe build something bigger when I feel more confident 🤔
The art is nice, and I like timer choices.

But when I played in web browser, the text for choices is a little blurry..
Other than that, this is cool! Keep it up!
Thank you for playing! I was having trouble with fonts and stuff and ran out of time to fix it but will definitely see how to adjust it after all the game jam is done :)
