Super cool vibe and story. Awesome art direction and very, very stylish! The silhouettes reminded me of some of the UI elements in Persona 3R. The sprites reminded a little bit of early-mid 2000's era Disney, in a good way of course (because it was the best era). Love that.
I generally have issues finishing VN's due to my limited attention span, but this kept me completely engaged through it's entirety. This is partially attributed to the interactivity and mini-games, though I think they could be developed to be slightly more engaging. However, the consequences of failing these sections and the way it affects the story is brilliant. The persisting of injuries in the sprite work particularly stand out. This is the kind of attention to detail that makes this game unique.
Speaking of attention to detail, I think it's really cool that you went out of your way to add extra accessibility options and the choice to turn mini-games/timed choices off. Personally I prefer to play things as the developer intended, but giving players the option to customize their experience and play how they want to is admirable.
I encountered a small issue where the music at the climax of chapter 2 persisted in to the narration at the beginning of chapter 3, which resulted in the narration being effectively inaudible. In fact, the narration was a bit too quiet in general as even the ambient tracks were too loud against it. I realise this can be easily rectified by lowering the music in settings, but I'd prefer if there was some leeway to increase the volume of the dialogue instead. Because the default mix is set at 100% for each channel, there's no headroom to manually increase any parts we feel are too quiet. The only other thing I have a minor issue with is 3rd party assets - not because I'm against people using them, only because I think having something 100% original takes any game to the next level and furthers their uniqueness. Other than that, no gripes!
Congratulations on making such a polished game and thanks for a great experience! Excellent work. All the best! :)
The art inspirations you've mentioned are really interesting, because I've not played a Persona game at all! This just means I'm more incentivised to give them a try. I do love Atlantis, but I wouldn't have thought of that as an inspiration for my art either. Really intrigued as to whether I've subconsciously absorbed that somewhere along the line! Definitely not a bad thing though, because as you say, it was the best era.
It's great that you mentioned the issues you have with VNs -- it's actually the same problem I often have! Knowing my own experiences with struggling to stay focused and that it's not uncommon among other people, I designed the mechanics of the game with the goal of having a 're-engagement' section quite often. But, of course, they have to mean something! Nothing sadder than making a choice only to realise it did absolutely nothing. 😂 I do like building tension in mechanics, but I'm also very aware that people can't always engage with those in a way that isn't frustrating or impossible for them, so the first thing was to build an off button!
I'm so sorry about the music bug! Definitely putting that on the fix list for 1.2. I'm also going to have a look and see if I can't change the default on those audios -- we need to be able to hear our lovely narrator! Unfortunately third-party sounds and so on can be unavoidable when you're both a solo developer and under a time constraint, but I'm hoping to get a full team in my next Jam project.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a lovely, thought-out review! I really appreciate it.
I loved the minigames and timed choices! The music really added to the vibe! Loved the way the art was done with the text. Neat game :D
Thank you so much! I personally love a bit of tension in my visual novels, so I'm very pro-minigames and timers.
The textured visuals and ways you managed to choreograph/layout some of those scenes within Ren'py were really quite impressive. The colors and angles you chose always made the scenes really pop. And the contrast between some of the lighter moments verses the darker undertones were handled skillfully both within the script and visually. Loved all the silhouette usage and the stat recap at the end as well!
In short, great work. And also please keep making cool things!
I really appreciate such a kind comment! Thank you! Layouts and telling the story through subtle visuals are always fun for me, so I'm glad they've made an impact. I thought the stats would be both entertaining and a good hint system for how close you were to other endings/different dialogue branches, since they're all valuables that are tracked anyway. <3!
The visuals and storybook-style presentation suited your VN's premise. The lighthearted aspects of the competition for the prince's favor contrasted well with the darker narrative developments later in the story. Good job!
Thank you so much! I had fun with the contrast of the narrative's vibe, for sure.
An impressively large game, with neat worldbuilding! I want the best for Haven. You did a good job of prioritizing assets, and the compositing effects on the artwork with the textures and overlaid typography work very well for cultivating a storybook feeling throughout. There's a good blend of horror and fun fantasy novel elements throughout too! I encountered one bug in the web version shortly after beginning Chapter 4 (screenshot of the error code below if that helps!), but was very compelled by the whole thing. Big congrats to the team!!
I also want the best for Haven, and spent a month lamenting over the inherent tragedy of the story that she's in. Such a touching review! The backgrounds were super fun to design. Regarding the bug, that's unfortunately an error on your end, as it's to do with the network you're connected to. I'd suggest trying the downloadable version to avoid that. Thank you for playing!
An absolutely delightful dark fairytale, replete with unexpected twists, beautiful illustrations, a mysterious prince, and an intrepid, clever heroine. From the storybook introduction to the gradual descent into horror, I was uttertly bewitched, anxious to discover what might lurk in each new chapter. The abstract backgrounds and secondary characters having fairytale text as a texture was above and beyond, as were the gentle, subtle motions incorporated into both backgrounds and UI. An absolutely gorgeous work, with lovely music, and very effective use of the voice acting--very well done! Would absolutely befriend Haven while vying for the Prince again✨
This comment is a beautiful story in itself! Thank you for taking the time to write it, it's so appreciated. Haven's such a beautiful bestie, isn't she? I'd happily write about her and Creek's friendship until the dawn of time. I'll pass on your notes about the voice acting to the VA, I'm sure he'll be delighted to hear you liked it!
The visuals are so unique! I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this. You did an amazing job, and the story is incredibly engaging. Really enjoyed it ♥
That's a very touching review! I really appreciate it. Thank you so much!
I really enjoyed this game! The art is lovely and has such a unique style, and I especially liked the contrast between the bright, colorful visuals throughout most of the story and the much darker final section.
Also, the twist was great!
I also enjoyed the minigames! They were a fun way to interact with the story!
Overall, I think this is a really interesting story with a lovely presentation and some genuinely memorable moments. There's a lot of potential here, great work, everyone!
I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed your playthrough! I call the art style, "Oh god the deadline is looming and I haven't drawn people in over a year." 😂 Telling story through colour palettes is one of my favourite parts of making games, though. Thank you so much for the lovely comment!
This is SO well done, and so incredibly dynamic - I loved the design of everything, the UI was off the charts, a really unique experience! Congratulations on a fantastic game :)
That's so kind of you, thank you so much! I had fun designing the UI, so I'm glad you noticed it.
Really good story with a wonderful twist at the end (I loved prince's design). The minigames makes you more engaged with the story, and the art is really unique and lovely. Even though I would have loved to see a wider variety of minigames, that's just a tiny advice.
In conclusion, The story is wonderful and the choice to tell it like a tale is very good! Really nice work guys!
I really appreciate such a lovely comment, thank you! I went through soooo many drafts for the prince's design, so I'm glad the final version paid off. More minigames would have been super fun! Unfortunately time constraints meant it was better to have one minigame that definitely worked right, rather than three that may not have. 😂
I found the story interesting and liked the choices — some of them really had some weight to them. The minigames I also enjoyed, I just found them easy to get through.
What caught my attention the most was the contrast between the colorful, bright art during the whole game and the final part: it's a really big contrast, and together with what happens in the story, it helps a lot with the final tension.
I'm glad that you enjoyed it! Yeah, the minigames are intended to be fairly easy. I contemplated adding a challenge mode, though. 😂 It delights me that you enjoyed the colour contrasts during the game -- I spent a lot of time thinking to myself, 'how does the art help tell the story beyond the obvious?' and that was a big part of it. Thank you for playing!
I really liked the visuals. The choices all felt quite meaningful. In terms of story, I think the main premise is very interesting. I think the beginning part explained the main idea of the story quite well, but I can't seem to invest in Creek's journey. I think part of this is because we only learn about Creek's backstory after chapter 3-4, and prior to that, we only know that she was sent here by her father with the last boat. For half of the story, her way of talking (which I liked, actually) made me think that she doesn't care about this competition. Many of the choices that the protgonist make, for example the saving drowning bride section, show more about the nature of the competition. This is fine, but I feel like it is better if they are used to build the main characters instead, especially early in the story. I think if part of Creek's backstory is moved to the beginning, that will help the reader build sympathy towards her, and make the story more engaging.
But overall, I really liked it! The character dynamic between Creek and Haven is my favorite! Sorry if the review sounds a bit harsh, but I see a lot of potential in this story so I wanted to give my opinions :)
I can absolutely understand why you feel that way, and I am sorry that you didn't connect with Creek. The placement of her story at the end was an important design decision that has a purpose for being the way that it is; the prince and reason for the story needs to be introduced first, for one. It's also left until last because it (SPOILER ALERT) exposes Creek as a hypocrite in the face of the other brides, because she's not here for pure-hearted reasons either. Before that, she could arguably have been a blunt, fish-out-of-water person sent here by her father to find love. At this point she's spent three chapters, as you've said, observing the rest of the competition and judging them for being desperate, when she's no better herself. She doesn't care, per se, because she wasn't sent here to fall in love, just to steal. Her choices define who she is as a person and whether she's willing to compromise her values to get what she wants, and whether she is different from the other Brides or someone who stands apart from it.
The story would change dramatically in these aspects if I changed it, and although I do understand your concerns, I think it would compromise the narrative to change it in the ways you mentioned. Thank you for playing the game, and for leaving such a thought-out comment! Creek and Haven's dynamic is my favourite too. :)
Just a lil c here in a dialogue.
So far, I'm invested in the story, soooooo much FUNNNNNNNN OMG.
I haven't made it to ending yet, The sound, the visual, everything is pretty and polised, LOVE THIS <3333
Edited: I got DREAD and PITIED ending, about to try for another. the game's well done.
Uh oh! That'll be fixed in the next update. 😂 Thank you so much, really appreciate such a kind comment!
Edit: This was rectified in version 1.1, which is now available.
I absolutely loved the visuals, sound design, and music, and I want to congratulate whoever voiced the narrator. I got the “dread” ending, but I’ll definitely replay the game to see the alternate endings, because the story really intrigued me, and I think Creek and Heaven make a perfect couple, I want to see if there’s actually a way to reach an ending where the two of them end up together. Of all the games I’ve tried so far in this jam, this is definitely the most interactive one and also the one with the longest and most complete storyline. Well done!
This is such a lovely review, thank you so much. You've made my day! Izel, our VA, did an absolutely amazing job, and I've passed on your compliments. I'm also glad that Creek and Haven's bond is evident in the narrative. I hope you enjoy your replays!
