[PAID] Looking for a Pixel Artist / Animator – Tiny GTA 1 Inspired Top-Down Character Sprites

Hi everyone!

I'm currently developing my own top-down open-world game in Godot, heavily inspired by the original Grand Theft Auto (1997) and GTA 2.

I grew up playing these games, and I've always loved their tiny pixel characters, animations, and the feeling of a living, unpredictable city.

Over the past few months, I've been building my own game and custom level editor, featuring traffic, pedestrians, police chases, NPC interactions, vehicles, and much more.

Recently, I've been working on a new character animation system.

To understand how these tiny animations work, I studied the original GTA 1 sprites frame by frame and recreated some of them for testing. However, since I would eventually like to release my game commercially, I'm looking for a pixel artist who can create original character animations with a similar visual style, rather than copies of GTA's original artwork.

What I'm looking for

I need a very small, top-down human character sprite sheet with the following requirements:

  • Visual style: Classic 1990s pixel art, inspired by GTA 1.
  • Perspective: Almost directly from above.
  • Resolution: Very small characters, approximately the same size as those in my reference sprite sheet.
  • Color palette: Ideally around 10–12 distinct colors, with clearly separated areas for clothing, skin, and hair.
  • No anti-aliasing: Clean, sharp pixels without gradients or unnecessary shading.
  • Transparent background.
  • Consistent character positioning: The character should remain properly aligned throughout the animations.
  • Original artwork: The animations and character design must be independently created and suitable for commercial use.

Required animations

I'm looking for the following animation sets:

  1. Walking: A relaxed walking cycle, preferably around 8 frames.
  2. Running / Sprinting: Approximately 7 frames.
  3. Walking while aiming a weapon: The character holds an extended arm with a pistol or similar small firearm.
  4. Punching: A short melee attack animation.
  5. Death / unconscious poses: A few different static poses.

The exact number of frames can be discussed. Smooth and readable movement is more important to me than having lots of frames.

Important: Color customization

My game has a custom sprite recoloring system.

For example, I want to turn one basic character into dozens of different pedestrians simply by changing the colors of their shirts, pants, hair, and skin.

Because of this, a small, consistent color palette is extremely important.

I don't need dozens of different character designs. I'm primarily looking for one high-quality base character whose animations can be reused with different colors.

Reference material

I can provide my current sprite sheet to demonstrate the exact scale, layout, perspective, and animation requirements.

Please note that these references are intended to communicate the technical requirements and visual direction. The final character and animation artwork should be original.

Budget and commercial rights

This is a paid commission.

I'm an independent hobby developer working on a personal passion project, so my budget is limited, but I'm happy to discuss reasonable pricing.

I would prefer to start with a small paid test commission, such as a single walking animation, before commissioning the complete sprite sheet.

I would also need commercial usage rights, including permission to modify and recolor the sprites and include them in a commercially released game.

If you're interested, please share examples of your previous pixel-art character animations, preferably very small top-down sprites.

Thanks for reading! I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Additional Technical Requirements – Sprite Size & Sliding Animation

The characters are extremely small. My current sprite sheet uses a 25 × 25 pixel grid per animation frame, with the actual character occupying only part of that space.

I would like to keep approximately these dimensions, as the sprites need to fit into my existing animation system.

It's very important that the characters remain recognizable and their movements are clearly readable despite the low resolution.

One additional animation pose is required:

  • Sliding / Falling Pose: A single frame showing the character lying on the ground, as if they have fallen out of a moving vehicle and are sliding across the road.

This frame is particularly important because my game includes a mechanic where characters can fall out of moving vehicles and slide along the ground before coming to a stop.

Only one static sliding frame is needed. The actual sliding movement is handled by the game engine, so no additional animation frames are necessary.

Please maintain consistent sprite dimensions, a transparent background, and the same limited color palette throughout all animations.

Hi Swiffycat,

For a small paid first step, would US$25 for one original 8-frame walking cycle in one agreed facing direction fit your budget? Proposed delivery: 25 x 25 transparent PNG frames, an aligned sheet, frame timing and a 10-12-colour palette table with separate clothing, skin and hair roles for recolouring. Commercial game use, modification and recolouring would be included, with one consolidated revision. The full set, extra directions and other poses would be quoted separately after the test.

A public example of our pixel-motion work is here: https://briefcraftlab.itch.io/pixel-rpg-object-actions-refined-60 (the three-action sample is free). That example contains object actions; the character walk would be a new test. The workflow uses AI-assisted source artwork and code for pixel/palette cleanup and alignment. Would that be acceptable for your project?

If so, could you share the reference layout, required facing direction, target walk duration and deadline? Email coordination at briefcraftlab26@proton.me and PayPal payment would be suitable. Exact scope, delivery date and payment terms would be agreed before any commission; this is an initial proposal only.

Briefcraft Lab

Hi Briefcraft Lab,

Thank you for your reply.
Your proposal sounds interesting, and US$25 for a first small test commission seems reasonable.

I like that you included:

  • 25 x 25 transparent PNG frames
  • an aligned sprite sheet
  • frame timing
  • a 10–12 colour palette with separate clothing, skin and hair roles for recolouring

Before moving forward, I would like to clarify a few important points.

Because this game may eventually be released commercially, I need the final character animation to be original work and safe for commercial use. You mentioned an AI-assisted workflow for source artwork and cleanup. Could you please clarify:

  1. Will the final test animation be original and created specifically for my project?
  2. Will I receive commercial usage rights, including modification and recolouring, for use in a commercial game?
  3. Can you confirm that the final delivered work will not closely copy existing copyrighted game sprites or character animations?
  4. Is the delivered work exclusive for my project, or could similar outputs be reused elsewhere?

Also, your public sample looks interesting, but since it shows object animation rather than tiny top-down human character motion, I would like to ask whether you are comfortable creating a very small top-down human walk cycle in this style.

For the test, I can share my reference layout and sprite sheet.

The target would be:

  • one original 8-frame relaxed walking cycle
  • 25 x 25 per frame
  • transparent background
  • very small top-down character
  • limited colour palette suitable for recolouring

If everything sounds good after clarification, I would be happy to discuss the exact facing direction, walk duration, delivery date and payment details.

Best regards,
Swiffycat

Hi Swiffycat, thanks for the detailed questions. The US$25 test is still a proposal; no commission or payment is agreed yet.

The intended approach is to develop a new base character and eight poses for your project, using the disclosed AI-assisted artwork/code workflow. I would not trace, recolour or reuse GTA sprites. Your reference would guide cell size, alignment, perspective and motion requirements, not serve as source pixels to copy.

For the eventual written terms, I propose commercial game use, modification and recolouring, with the commissioned character files reserved for your project rather than resold in our asset packs. General tools and techniques would remain reusable. I cannot promise that AI-assisted output is globally unique, guarantee exclusive copyright ownership, or provide a legal non-infringement warranty. Please tell me if those guarantees are a requirement, as I should not imply that I can supply them.

I am willing to attempt this small top-down walk, but the object sample is not evidence of a completed human-character cycle. Before requesting payment, I would first show a limited motion preview so you can judge silhouette, alternating steps and alignment at native 25px size. That preview would be for evaluation, not a finished commercial delivery. If it does not meet the style, we can stop before a paid commission.

Please share the reference layout and your chosen facing direction, approximate cycle duration and preferred date. A link here or email to briefcraftlab26@proton.me works. After reviewing those, we can settle the test scope, rights and payment details.

Briefcraft Lab

Hi Swiffycat, I found the technical grid attached to your reply and used it to check the scale. Here is the preliminary motion study I offered, so you can judge the tiny human walk directly.

It uses eight 25 x 25 frames, 11 colours with separate hair/skin/clothing roles, and a fixed root. The pixel poses were built anew in code; no pixels from your reference or GTA sprites were copied. The GIF shows native size and 6x enlargement on light and dark backgrounds.

North-facing and an 880 ms cycle are provisional choices, not an agreed specification. This is an evaluation preview, not the finished commercial delivery or a request for payment.

Does this silhouette and motion fit your direction? If so, please confirm the facing, approximate cycle duration and preferred date, and whether the workflow and proposed rights in my previous reply fit your needs. Then we can settle the US$25 test scope and payment details.

Briefcraft Lab

Hi Briefcraft Lab,

Thank you for the motion preview.
I like it very much – the character reads well at this small size, the silhouette feels clear, and the walk cycle has a nice retro top-down feel.

I would be happy to proceed with the paid test commission.

To confirm, I would like the final delivery to include:

  • 8 transparent PNG frames at 25 × 25 pixels
  • one aligned sprite sheet
  • frame timing information
  • a small 10–12 colour palette table with separate clothing / skin / hair roles for recolouring
  • commercial game use, modification and recolouring rights as discussed

Please let me know the next step regarding payment and delivery time.

Best regards,
Swiffycat

Here is a little preview, of how it looks like now.

Hi Swiffycat, thank you for the feedback. Before arranging the US$25 payment, could you confirm one remaining specification: should this test keep the north-facing direction shown in my preview, or face right to match your editor? Is the 880 ms cycle (110 ms per frame) suitable?

The proposed package remains eight 25 x 25 transparent PNGs, one aligned sheet, frame timings, the 11-colour role table and one consolidated revision, with the commercial use/modification/recolouring terms discussed above. My proposed turnaround is two business days after the final direction, scope and payment arrangements are agreed. Extra directions and animations would be separate.

Please email briefcraftlab26@proton.me with those confirmations so I can send the exact order summary and appropriate payment instructions privately. No need to post your PayPal details here. This message is a scope check, not a payment request.

Hi Swiffycat!

I'm a 2D digital artist and character illustrator, and I would be very interested in working on this project with you. The classic GTA 1 top-down style and custom Godot setup sound like a fantastic project to bring to life

I would love to discuss your requirements, color palettes, and animation needs in detail. To make chatting easier, we can connect on Discord my handle is anhhuylt9090.

Please feel free to reach out whenever you're ready. I'm looking forward to discussing this further with you!

Hey Freya! Love the character work. If you want more devs to find you, I founded ComposerScout, a free site where devs post art roles and artists get them straight in their inbox. Art just opened this week: https://composerscout.com/#edit

Thank you all so much for your kind replies and for showing interest in my little passion project! It genuinely means a lot to me that you took the time to respond.

I've already found an artist to work with, but I really appreciate everyone's kindness and willingness to help.

I wish you all the best, and who knows, maybe we'll have the chance to work together on something in the future! 😊

Hi Swiffycat — Hx Works here. For your paid 25px walking test, here is a self-initiated, code-authored overhead pose study:

https://github.com/hxsworrk-lab/character-walk-study/tree/main/topdown-25px

It has three key poses on a 25 × 25 grid, with ten colours and separate recolouring roles. It is not a finished eight-frame walk. No GTA or reference-image pixels were copied.

Would this silhouette suit your direction? If so, which facing direction should the paid test use? Scope, workflow, rights, total fee and timing would be agreed before commissioned work.

Hi Hx_Wroks, thank you for your reply.

In my editor, the sprites are all directed to the right side.

I really like the preview, but i think we have to get rid of the nose.  How much do you want for a 8 frame walking animation?

Thanks — right-facing and without the nose, understood. For this paid test, I'd scope one 8-frame, 25 × 25 walking cycle for the same character, with transparency and the current ten-colour recolouring setup. Proposed delivery: eight PNG frames plus a 200 × 25 PNG strip, using the code-authored workflow shown in the study.

My reference rate is US$25/hour. Which currency and payment method would you prefer? I'll confirm a fixed total, delivery time, revisions and usage rights before starting.

Hx Works

To answer the total-price part more directly: my non-binding labor estimate is US$50–75 for one right-facing, nose-free eight-frame walking cycle of this character in the preview's simplified style. That covers eight 25 × 25 transparent PNGs, one 200 × 25 PNG strip and one round of minor pixel adjustments.

Once the payment currency and method are clear, we can check transfer fees and agree a fixed total, usage terms and delivery date before starting.
