This game has top tier UI for any game, not just game jam games. Fantastic job on that!

The animations and sounds and design were all good too. It seemed especially stable and bug free.

I lost track of time, trying to decide how to optimize how many new things to get per the weather. And after I figured out you get optimal points for neatly filling the bag, I did that every time.

The core loop is great and could be developed more by having some sort of tension in deciding what sorts of sand piles you want to dig up, or if there was some conflict to avoid at the beach.

The meta loop was excellent with the upgrades, which of course could always be more balanced with time and testing.

I think the hook or goal of the whole experience could be a little stronger, (such as paying back your loans in Animal Crossing, or escaping your hellish home in Hades)

I'm telling you these three things in case you make something bigger from this, which I kind of hope you do.

I had to stop "early" (after a half an hour) and I was curious if there was an end game or ending, or a set amount of levels? (I noticed the calendar)

I was fun trying to pack the fossils as optimally as possible, reminded me of playing Talos's Principle which I also enjoyed greatly. The entire game is really well-polished with stuff like UI animation and footprint trail. There's also lots of upgrades that I can research on. The weather system also adds a bit of variety to the gameplay.

Also tried the puzzle mode which was very fun.

For some reason the music becomes choppy when moving around, not sure if you aware of it. I'm using it on microsoft edge if that helps. Also I think using scrollwheel to rotate the pieces would be nice.

This one is just awesome. Having an extra puzzle mode ON TOP of the regular game in a jam is insane (I 3 star-ed all 15 levels of the puzzle after getting all the fossils lol)
The art is great and I'm a big fan of having a button that does nothing but play a lil animation to mash while I walk back to the tent lol
The puzzle mechanics were nothing new/unique, but a really well-polished execution of them, great job!

Such a good game. The animation and the art style blows my mind.

If I ever make a game HALF this good, I would die in peace!

Really incredible art direction, and execution. You all are rock-stars!

Thanks for sharing the Behind the Scenes too, I loved those and learned a few things from it!

Genuinely a masterclass of good game design. A few of the bigger notes I took:

  • The upgrades preemptively counter what the player could perceive as "frustration" or "tedium" towards the end game. I.e. when the player is tracking down the last few rare fossils, the upgrades they've purchased over the whole game make getting those specific fossils easier via more bag space, double-drops, increased rarity, and QOL boosts like faster move and dig speed. REALLY good design choices there.
  • Really appreciated how the collection log lists what weather your missing fossils are available in, so once I had all the fog fossils collected, I knew I could head back once I got my bag full for upgrade points (instead of checking every drop on that level hoping for a rare that wasn't possible to drop).
  • The perfect pack bonus was *chefs kiss*, perfect. Not so OP that it was unbalanced, but enough of a benefit that it naturally encourages the player to interact even more indepth with the bag sorting puzzle mechanic. Again, great design choice.

Other misc observations I had, really nice use of the color palette in your art. You managed to look unique and distinct even from the other games using the same palette, which takes skill. And while the number of controls looked a bit intimidating just reading from the description, once in-game they're perfectly intuitive. I did run into a few little momentary freezes & audio stutters on the performance side, but we're working with web builds so that's pretty expected.

Overall, really well done!

Developer

Hey! Thanks so much I love it when someone takes the time to write such a detailed comment i'll gladly return the favour. Secretly we also boost the chance of fossils and the weather needed when you have less than 8 left to complete the collection log as we thought it would be unfun if you're left with a few to collect and just got bad rng and were stuck rerolling days. Also when we play tested I famously had bad  luck!!

Re: the small stutters - yeah it's due to being a web build I tried doing some tweaks but i'm new to creating web builds for games so this was the best I could get it within the time given

This game is genuinly SO good! It is so polished with every last aspect and expecially the sound is amazing same with the art direction. As other people said it is lacking theme and limitation but it still an amazing game. Genuinely great work!

This is AMAZING! I enjoyed every bit of this game, and the ending letter was so sweet and added the perfect finishing touch. The gameplay is so fun, it really kept me engaged the whole time trying to find all the fossils to fill the logbook. And the inventory management along the way was 'chef's kiss' so enjoyable and satisfying. The art is just incredible. Great job on the parallax and animations! I would 100% buy this game if it was made into a full game. Others here mentioned that there was lacking in the theme and limitation which I do agree with, but that is the only critique I have to give about this incredible game. You all nailed it!

Great game! Especially love the art and animation! Also so cool to see the journal down below :)

Wow! Such crazy polish; animations, juice, quality of life in such a short amount of time. Limitations could use a little touch, but really feels like a paid game.

Developer

Thanks so much for the positive feedback! My favourite bit of game juice was the daily report i wanted it to feel like balatro style scoring like bling Bling BLIIING and the rising notes on the fossils rarity really had that dopamine hit to it

This is incredible! The game is so polished and the artstyle looks so cute with the animations. I didn't really understand the theme but this really feels like something I would have bought and played.

Props to the team!

Developer

Really glad you enjoyed it, because it's not a short game jam game i was totally worried no one would complete it so thanks for playing through our little fossil collecting game! Our ties to the theme was supposed to be closer to a vibe than in your face autumnal I think both of our artists ended up enjoying the colour palette limitation too. Will definitely try to work in the theme a lot more on the next jam we enter!

Submitted

Ooh yeah, there is an ending! I had ran out of time

Submitted(+1)

okay this is very good, if core loop would get variability i could think about buying something like that

Developer

That's such a nice comment thanks!

Love me a good inventory management game and this one hits so well! Great job on a really polished game!

Developer

Thanks! It was a suggestion by one of our artists and i made a little demo of it and couldn't stop trying out new shapes and stuff it felt really fun, i definitely love that resident evil inventory management feeling for sure

Is that what I think it is?

Developer(+2)

This game is a work of fiction any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental.

Submitted

I totally caught that too,  it was a funny little easter egg.

Really amazing art! Loved the mix of detail art in the background, and the super cute animation of dig dogg himself. It doesn't really match the theme much but it's a fun, cozy game. Haven't beat it yet but I'll be back !

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much! The art in your game was so adorable I've never seen a more thoughtfully designed main menu in a game jam game

Submitted

Thank you! Our UI artist did an awesome job with it :D

Submitted(+2)

This game was amazing and I was not expecting the bittersweet story at the end once collecting all the fossils! It is very well polished and I enjoyed every minute!

Developer

Thanks so much for playing our game! I love hearing that someone beat it make it feel really worth it so genuinely thank you!!

Wow. The UI and the artwork is just incredible. LOVED the cutout style. I didn't get the limitation or the theme as much, I assume you get fossils when you look away from the bag is the interpretation? And it's in Autumn in the calendar I assume. Polish is incredible and the gameplay was addicting. Overall, great job.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks for the nice words! The limitation was meant to be the beach resets as the tide comes in every night so the areas where the fossil are and what type of fossil reset, the places where you dig also if you walk away get hidden but it's good feedback. I think we didn't want to be too heavy handed with making it autumnal and just went with the cute colour palette instead.

Submitted(+2)

10/10 the polish on this is amazing, the artwork is so cute and the gameplay is so fun!!

Developer

Thank you so much! I love the art style in your game also (i'm just the dev so I can't take credit for any of our art ๐Ÿ˜ถ)

Submitted(+1)

I genuinely can't comprehend how your team was able to get so much polish in only two weeks. While the game may not be expansive horizontally (as in new areas, etc.), there is so much love clearly put into this and I absolutely could see this turn into an actual release... It doesn't seem to fit the jams theme very much, but it was absolutely cozy : )

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the nice words! We had finished the main gameplay loop really early on with temporary art so most of the jam was just polishing and adding in art when it was finished, new areas would have been cool but with the hand drawn background art there wasn't really a ton of time to finish a second area that but it's ๐Ÿ’ฏ a good idea for if we add to this game in the future
