Faker Finder: free pass-the-phone party game (3-12 players). Is the first round clear without reading rules?

Faker Finder is a pass-the-phone party game for 3-12 players on one device. Everyone except one player sees the secret word. That one player is the Faker and has to bluff.

Players take turns giving a clue that shows they know the word without giving it away. The Faker listens and tries to blend in. Then everyone votes on who the Faker is.

My question: when you start your first round, is it clear what to do and who sees the word, without reading any rules? Where did you hesitate?

The secret-word and Faker concept sounds fun for a party game! 🎭 I'd suggest adding a quick visual example before the first round, showing who sees the secret word and how clues work. A clear “Pass the Phone” screen could also help prevent accidental reveals. Have you considered a short practice round?

Thanks, this is really useful! There is already a pass screen: it says "Pass the phone to Sam", Sam taps "I'm Sam. Show me", sees the word, then taps "Hide it and pass", so nobody else sees it. But you're right that nothing shows the flow before round 1. A one-screen example (who sees the word, what a good clue looks like) or a short practice round is a good idea, and I'm noting it for the next update.

Hi! I tried the first round on desktop Chrome, clicking through with the 4 default names, so it was one person passing the phone to themselves, not a real group.

To your question: yes, it was clear without reading anything. "Pass the phone to Alex" and the "I'm Alex. Show me." button work really well, I always knew who should look.

A few things I noticed:

  • On the "Caught!" screen the word is already shown ("Then reveal: it was Panda") while the imposter is asked to say it out loud. If they're holding the phone, they can just read it. Maybe put the word behind a "Reveal" button?
  • The vote buttons are on the same screen as "Clue time", so someone could tap a name before everyone gave a clue. A small "Done with clues, vote" step could help.
  • The title says faker, the cards say imposter. Maybe pick one word?
  • The names come prefilled (Alex, Sam...), so I started without typing ours. I think a real group would do the same by mistake.

Nice one for family nights. Did you try it with kids already?

Thanks for such a careful run-through, this is gold. All four points are fair:

- Caught! screen: you're right, the word is sitting right there while the Faker is asked to guess it. I'll put it behind a Reveal button.

- Votes next to clues: a separate "Done with clues, vote" step makes sense so nobody votes early.

- Faker vs imposter: I'll pick one word and use it everywhere.

- Prefilled names: good catch, a real group would just hit start. I'll make it ask for your names first.

Glad the pass screen read clearly without rules, that was the part I worried about most. If you ever get to try it with an actual group, I'd love to hear how the votes went.

Quick update for PingLife and u_capricorn_studioz: the fixes from this thread are now in the itch build too (refresh the page if you had it open). Players type their names or tap Skip, there's a one-screen "How a round works" before round 1, giving clues and voting are now separate steps, the word on the Caught! screen stays hidden until someone taps "Reveal the word", and the game says "Faker" everywhere. If anything still trips up your group, tell me and I'll fix it.
