I had a smile on my face the entire time I was playing, the controls reminded me a lot of the toy helicopters you can buy. That being said, the vehicle is quite difficult to controls and very easy to end up upside down. Some small suggestions I would have is to have some indicators on the throttle UI to indicate a good hovering speed, and some limiters on how fast you can rotate/pitch the helicopter. Thanks for making this, I hope to see more from you in the future!

Developer(+1)

Yes I agree with the control indicators. I wanted to add something like that but had to limit my abilities for the game jam time limit. I appreciate the feedback and compliment :)

The controls were maybe a bit tricky, but having played some helicopter missions in games like GTA or some helicopter sims, I still find them more arcade'y than simulation'y and in genera they were easy to get familiar with after a while :) I had fun, I was a bit surprised in the 4th level that there are some psychedelic shapes floating in the air, but noticed the text about freeflight and being in fact end-game after few seconds. I like the graphics style (I like lowpoly and retro look in general). It was funny to rescue capsules by crashing them from above or even rolling on the ground (if you plan to expand this idea further, you could limit the pitch/yaw/roll values for a successful rescue:P). A timer to show you your time on each level and overall for whole game would be nice addition as well :) I don't know if you handcrafted the positions of capsules (I don't want to call "people" things that I aggressively squashed with my heli :D) to rescue or they are randomly generated, but in the last playable level one of positions was hard (peak of one of the hills) - in a good way though, that was a good place requiring a bit of skill to properly land on. In general, a bit of ui polish would make this game superb in my opinion, the gameplay it self is challenging and rewarding :) Screenshot is an attempt that was somehow successful but probably shouldn't be :P

Developer

I agree with a lot of your critiques! I wanted to add some limiters and decrease the likelihood of flipping, but I found myself out of time and just added the reset button :P I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Really nice game! The controls were a bit tricky for me. Maybe they're more realistic this way, but I found them pretty hard to get used to haha. Maybe you could add an optional arcade mode with simpler controls, so players who aren't used to simulators can enjoy it more easily!

Also, the helicopter model looks excellent! Great job!

Developer

Thanks for the compliment! Yes, I agree that, given more time, I would have liked to have added a simpler control mode.

Controlling the helicopter was challenging, but I thought it was a fun and rewarding game!

It is hard to steer the helicopter, which is part of the fun... but it is harder to guess from the perspective, if the target is actually below you, which made it a bit frustrating because everytime I landed on a non-even underground and not close enough, my helicopter ended up rotors down and I had to reset. I think a small "range ui overlay" would remove that hurdle. Nice implementation of the theme, tried to fly though some dougnuts in the end but failed miserably 🤣

Developer

I think you're right about the altitude (range) meter. In my next project I will definitely be implementing more UI elements :) thanks for the reply!

Wow, fun game. I think the controls are tough, but I think it's also part of the experience.

Developer

It's definitely not for everyone. I think next time around I'll have to keep in mind adding simpler controls. Thanks!

Pretty fun game, the controls are not the easiest but still fun to play

Developer

Thank you!

Fun game and really neat control system, I just found them a little sensitive

Developer

Thanks! I might have not made it obvious enough that there is a settings menu for sensitivity.

I mean this as a compliment and I hope you take it as one, but I wish you named this game heliQWOPter hahaha. Insane control scheme but surprisingly fun.

Developer(+1)

That's a great name haha! Thank you :)

I learned why I’ve never been a pilot lol fun game

Enjoyed this! Has the look and feeling of a PS1 game. Im terrible at controlling helicopters, but you do a GREAT job implementing the controls.

Developer(+1)

I appreciate it! I think many struggled with the control scheme, so I'll have to keep that in mind :)
