Description
This is a track I composed for Precision OST Jam 2, The jam had 5 levels, I chose level 5, which means I had to incorporate level 5 and all the previous levels.
Level 1: Music for a minigame in a video game.
Level 2: The music must be mischievous and energetic.
Level 3: The music must feature a free-reed instrument, such as an accordion or harmonica.
Level 4: The game is called World of Cakes, a chaotic cooking party game.
Level 5: The music must be a ragtime piece.
For level 1, 2, and 4: I made what I think suits a cooking minigame, and sounds energetic and mischievous.
For level 3, I used an accordion as an extra layer for the left piano.
For level 5, I made it a ragtime (or tried at least, as I have no experience with the genre)
I've also incorporated the 2 bonus challenges:
- You may include sounds from objects related to the game's setting
- Your music may include a modulation.
For the first bonus challenge, I've used sounds from pots and pans "panned" left and right as percussion.
For the second bonus challenge, I've made a modulation at around 0:54
Hope you like it.

Absolutely love it - great composition, love the instrument choices, the arrangement works beautifully...
There are two little things that got to me a little as I listened to it: At 01:11, you are removing the bass section and the off-beat high piano chord is a little disorienting. It's better on a second listen, but the first time utterly confused me with the switch from a clear rhythmic structure to this dominating syncopation. The other thing is the same high piano chord that keeps going from 1:11 to the end. It might be a conscious choice, but I could see myself become really annoyed with it if I had to listen to that part on loop for some amount of time.
Despite these two little hangups, "Heat up the Ovens" will be one of the pieces from this jam that my immediate social circle will be forced to listen to.
What I liked about this piece:
The ideas are very clear, and all the elements serves that idea! Picking a minor key adds to the "mischeivousness" and there are no notes that are out of the established keys. While Ragtimes usually have note and phrases that extends through a beat, or sometimes across bars (so that the first beat doesn't land on beat 1), I can't argue with the stylistic choices you've made here since it serves the feeling so well. I would say this piece is more in the Swing territory, and with its high energy piano strides and runs, I can definitely see myself screaming at my friend to plate the food as it plays in the background!
What I'd love to see in future pieces:
The transition from Am to Bbm is a little abrupt, I'd like to be eased in with a bit of harmonic preparation (maybe a iiΒ°-V7-i in Bbm) and melodic preparation (make the melody go up or down into one of the chord tones of Bbm). Alternatively leaning in to the abruptness also works, but then we really have to make a point of it and introduce brand new material and maybe a change in rhythmic feel too!
Overall a great piece for the fun and mischievous fast paced GOTY contender World of Cakes!
Top!
Pretty epic! That run through the middle of track ππ©βπ³ golden brown pulled it out the cake oven right on time! Good luck!
