Before night fell I think I accidentally collected all the wood so I wasnt able to keep the fire or the lanterns going at all despite basically searching the entire area probably. The graphics were good and coherent to your theme. I wonder how you can procedurally generate crayon style sprites as said in your description? Is it just a filter you added on top of an existing artwork, or did you generate them from scratch? That is very interesting to me.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing, and sorry about the wood! Running out before night is a real balance flaw, and I'll fix it in the next version (a guaranteed wood supply so the fire and lanterns can't be soft-locked).

As for the art: it's all generated from scratch, there's no hand-drawn artwork underneath and no filter on top of existing images. Every sprite is made by small Python scripts (numpy + Pillow):

1. Shapes: each object (cat, tree, tent, lantern...) is described as geometry: polygons, ellipses, capsules and splines, rasterised into plain black-and-white masks.

2. Crayon look: a custom mini-engine turns each mask into "crayon": the edge is roughened with noise so it looks wobbly like a wax stroke, the fill gets paper-like grain, a shifted darker shade gives a bit of volume, and a darker rim acts as the outline.

3. Packing: all the finished sprites are packed into one texture atlas plus a small JSON file with their positions.

4. Godot: the game loads the atlas and builds the world from textured quads (the world is 3D, but characters and props are flat crayon sprites facing the camera). Even the cat is assembled from separate generated parts (body, 4 legs with knees, 3 tail segments, head, ears) and animated in code, which is why it can walk, crouch and pounce smoothly.

So it's procedural generation first (Python), then assembly and animation in the engine (Godot). Changing a colour or shape in a script and re-running it redraws the whole set in the same style, which kept the look coherent.

Thanks for the thorough explanation!

I think I played the game before, and either I didn't realize it back then or you've polished it even more. Either way, I really like the art style and atmosphere

I really like the game and the concept behind it, but I am not the biggest fan of anything with even slight jump scares, so I kept closing the tab before I could beat the game. Great game though, I hope you do well in the jam!

That switch from a purring ginger cat at a cozy winter picnic to a cat that smiles wrong and starts hunting you is such a great whiplash. Keeping a fire burning because the creatures can't enter its light, while freezing if you wander too far, gives the survival loop a really clear shape, and the cozy hand-drawn style on your page is adorable.

I'd also be so happy if you could check out my entry, Forever. It's Valentine's-week dating-app dread in about 10 minutes, with two endings. Honest ratings and feedback are really appreciated, and thanks for reading!

The art style is fantastic here, especially the movement when the blizzard comes

I am not a fan of this genre but I really love the art and its usage in the game! The game feels polished, I found no bugs. I think this game will be a winner of this game jam

Thank you so much for the kind words! We all hope to win, of course, haha. I wish you good luck too! Even if I don't win anything, I'll still be happy with what I've made. I really like this game and want to keep developing it further. Thanks again for playing!

Reminded me of Don't Starve so much which i played so much years ago. Love the survival concept. Can't win even the easy difficulty though. I think the key to win is to stock many wood around your camp. but hiding in your camp during night is a dead sentence as you will not likely lose any monsters surround your camp. The artstyle is superb too. Love it. Simple but packed with content and action. The one thing i think could improve the game is the cat animation. Whether it is searching, chasing, wandering or hurting, the cat animation will ielevate the game. Good job, i like this game.

Thank you so much for playing, and for the kind words!

You're right that the game doesn't explain itself well. Here is a strategy that wins on Easy in about 5 minutes:

1. During the day, collect wood and craft an axe at the hunter's cabin (he trades an axe for logs and stones). Chop a few trees with it, and craft a second axe if the first one breaks.

2. Go around to each of the three lantern posts and cut one tree near every post. Each lantern needs 2 to 3 logs, so leave a few logs next to each one.

3. As soon as night falls, run with your flashlight to the lanterns. Carry 3 spare logs in case you run short. Light the two lower lanterns first, then run past the hunter's cabin to the top one.

4. When the third lantern is lit, the hunt begins. Just keep running up toward the gates and you will reach the road and the ending.

Tips: the fire only protects you when it is burning, so keep feeding it. Hide behind trees with your flashlight off when something hunts you. And yes, staying at camp at night is a trap, so keep moving!

You're also right about the cat animation, that is the first thing I want to improve. Thanks again, this means a lot.

Well on screenshots it looks amazing but i can't play it on browser and i can't download it cuz i am on linux
(i think it is not working cuz you exported just the .exe file whitout .pck how holds things like the code or the art)
but what can i say?
 good luck twin

Developer

Thanks for the kind words, and I'm really sorry the game didn't run for you!

The Windows build is a single exe (the data is embedded inside it), so it only runs on Windows, and I only built Windows and browser versions for the jam. I'm not sure why the browser version failed for you either. It may be a Linux browser or graphics issue, it works for me on Windows.

I can make a Linux build after the voting ends, and I'll post it on the page. If you have a moment, tell me which browser you used and what you saw (a black screen, an error message?), it would really help me fix it.

Good luck to you too!

Thanks for wising me luck! (i really need it)
here is the error message that i get:

Error: Couldn't load project data at path "/". Is the .pck file missing? If you've renamed the executable, the associated .pck file should also be renamed to match the executable's name (without the extension).

if you can fix that i will happily play it cuz it looks very good☺️

Developer

Thanks, this helps a lot! This message comes from the browser version, and it usually means the game data file (index.pck) didn't finish downloading, or your browser kept an older cached copy of it after I updated the build. The game itself runs fine for other players.

Could you try these?

1. Hard refresh the page (Ctrl+Shift+R).

2. Open the game in a private/incognito window, or in another browser (Chrome or Firefox).

3. Turn off ad blockers or extensions for the page.

If it still fails, please tell me which browser and version you use, so I can look into it. I'll also make a Linux build after the voting ends. Thanks for your patience!

Still not working but you do not have to steers about that i will play after the voting ends and you make a linux version
but thank you for your kinds words☺️
