specs:
- mac mini m2, 32gb ram, 12 cores
- windows download, played .exe via GameHub emulator

overall:
- a good start but feels very empty

audio:
- absolutely love the lucious synth rolling in. wish it didn't cut off when accessing other parts of the menu. more music/sfx in-game would be nice.

display/presentation:
- beautiful pixel art start screen and fitting typography
- in-game graphics a little static but nicely offputting in a retro way.

customization/accessibility:
- start menu help only. no way to pause or check instructions after starting. - right/left click was a little janky

gameplay/controls:
- shift to run, big plus (esp given the distance/lack of world objects)
- picking up the things from the grave by jumping on them was very confusing/not intuitive. lack of response from digging until done was a little confusing.
- WAY too much distance/lack of objects in the world. feels very unfinished/empty.
- esc being the insta-quit button with no confirmation is a no-go. the esc button is basically ingrained in gamer-brain as the pause/menu. even knowing it did this, i still accidentally quit the game while trying to get to the instructions.
- scroll to change weapons is good as a function, but the implementation was insanely fast/glitchy when switching to the point where it bugged out numerous times and made the weapon/tool disappear completely. no UI elements to show other weapons even existed.

Thank you for the helpful criticism! You’ve raised a lot of good points, and honestly half of them are explained by the lack of time, and the other half by the lack of experience. But we will learn from it!

I feel especially bad about the ESC key that immediately quits the game instead of showing a pause menu. I knew it was not good at all and wanted to fix it before the deadline, but I didn’t manage. I’ll take care of this in an update, for the potential future players.

Very good point for the scroll to change item, I knew something was janky about it, and from your comment I realized I should have put some kind of debounce on it. I’ll add this to the list too, especially since it’s an easy fix once you know what is the problem.

I also do apologize for making you play through an emulator, while making a MacOS build isn’t a problem with Godot. I will upload one with the next version, and I’ll remember to make one on our future games as well.

Thanks again for playing and taking the time to make this detailed review. We hope you had a good time on the game despite the issues!

Very original! Loved the overall presentation of this one, the aesthetics, the sounds were extra nice.

Personally, I would try spacing it out a little smaller, as it suffers from a big scale, and a lot of walking around - which I would look over, if not for those pesky, pesky bats. By accident you made them hella scary, solely because of how hard it is to kill them, making them randomly spawn from those graves, my god - nerve wracking - sorta in a good and bad way though. Definitely, made the game scarier for me at least, which is a big plus.

Curious what engine was used to build this? Very original, but wish I could have fight against those demon bats, as I really wanted to get inside that central crypt, to see whats there. Also, nice vista with the church, I literally tried hitting F12 to make a nice screenshot 🫀

Will try to give it another shot, as I'm really curious what's out there.

Thanks a lot for the detailed review, and for hosting this jam which was our first one! We’re really happy that we could convey the vibe we wanted into the game.

I understand for the level design, we had plans to put more things in the beginning, but the deadline brought us back to reality… We’ll make sure to work on this in our next game, start smaller and expand as needed.

Sorry about the bats =) Believe it or not i tuned them down in the last few days before completion, and I thought they were now too easy. I guess we need to find some people to playtest next time, it’s really hard the gauge the difficulty when you know how everything works under the hood. But, happy that you found them scary eventually, I just hope they weren’t too frustrating. If you go for another run, try getting the stake in the first cemetery on the right, it kills them in 2 hits.

To make this game, we used Godot 4.7, the models were made in Blockbench, and the 2D art in LibreSprite.

Thanks again, and count on us for the next GJ you’ll host!

A fun game with a retro aesthetic.

Bats are evil! >:(

Developer(+1)

Ha, they are indeed! But kinda cute in the same time, no ? =) Thanks for playing and the review!

I had a lot of fun playing this one, though I struggle hitting the enemies, not sure if was the collision, my mouse or just me XD but I really enjoyed this one, especially the boss fight, the soundtrack used it for it was nice, it makes me feel the combat was frenzy.

There is room to improve the fight and the level design, I think it can have more elements to interact in the world or maybe less walking (a smaller level?) and the bloom used at least on the boss fight, it blinded me when I tried to cure my self (not sure if that was intentional).

About the game concept, I liked the idea of graveyard digging and the way you regain hp was creative. Well done :) !!

Haha, sorry about the bloom with the Cross in the boss fight, I’ve playtested the boss only with the basic items and figured out too late how that one behaved in the boss arena.

Duly noted for the level design. I think we were too ambitious at the start and the world was supposed to be more filled up, unfortunately reality caught up and it’s true that it can feel either too empty or too big for what is there.

Thank you very much for the kind words, taking the time to play our game, and the constructive criticism =)

Even though the combat in this game is nothing special and the boss fight is super easy, I still enjoyed it. I especially like the movement—I’m a big fan of it.

Developer

Thank you for your review! The combat is a bit lacking, we wanted to implement a stamina system taking in consideration the weight of the weapons, but we ran out of time. Glad you enjoyed the game =)

Tried running through the game and it was a nice experience.
There are some stretches of level design, and a lot of learning by doing - but once you get past those things its a nice experience.

Nice entry - looking forward to see more

Thank you for playing and for the kind words =) Level design is not my strong suit indeed, but I will work on that on the future games.
