Loved the noir look and sounds of this game. I think the polish is definitely there. Systems-wise i would like for the bidding to feel a little more deliberate, maybe set your own max price beforehand, like people do in their heads at these things. Dunno if you ever played turmoil, but that game’s auction always had me gripped since the opponents can bid more if they get ahead of you in the game. Just me spitballing. Overall still very good game design. One little odd thing that i feel weird about: Those flies buzzing around the lamp are just squares in an otherwise very detailed scene, it felt a bit wrong to me. But again, That’s a total nitpick.

Developer

Yeah, I don’t really like the way the flies came out either. But in the jam, it’s one of those “where do I spend my time” things, ya know? Good to have someone else tell it too. I’ll clean up stuff like that after the jam. Glad you liked it!

Totally understandable btw. I have plenty of those lil annoyances with my own work

i liked it, the chance at the auction and the ability to appraise, set prices and haggle in your own shop is neat!

Developer

TYVM. To me, it’s kind of a ruse. The auction and shop part of the game is one thing, but navigating the story is another. Somehow, it’s all got to work together.

Very fun and gripping loop! I really like the comic book style illustrations and the UI was refreshingly unique - I will say though, if you do a full release see if you can get an illustrator to render the scenes - there were a number of strange AI artifacts that took me out of the immersion a few times.

I think I mentioned that I am in the self-storage industry. I work in corporate so I don't know a ton of store level stuff, but I do know that these days all auctions are online :( nobody comes and looks in units and does an in-person auction anymore. Just snap a photo of the unit and post it online. I think a game to capture this unique experience is just what is needed :D

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you so much! I was really going for something interesting that hadn't been seen before. I tried hard to catch AI stuff in the renders, but it's hard to catch it all. If you notice stuff, I'd appreciate if you go to the game page comments outside the jam and be specific about what you notice, so that after the jam I can clean it up. I try hard to not let slop pass.

I didn't know it was ALL online now. I was just recalling from the old Storage Wars days. Online only would kinda kill my story! But I built this to mirror some personal experiences I had over the summer as well, when I was dealing with auctions to try to build a business. It's so much more than just money...

Thanks again for playing and for comments.

UPDATE: Oooo....I caught one of the bugs in my own instance playing out... a woman walks out of the shop WITH HER HEAD ON BACKWARDS!!!! That will get fixed!

The three flashlight sweeps are such a good hook: I picked out a recliner, skis and a dining table in Unit 138, kept bidding against Peg, dropped out at $175, and then the game showed me her haul (china and a vintage denim jacket worth $720 to $1,080). That reveal stung in the best way. The regulars' tells are great too: Kip calling a unit junk a little too loudly, Peg's "$240, and not a penny more." The comic-panel art and Walt's letter about unit 112 set the mood right away. Really strong entry.

Developer

Thank you, and thanks for playing! I hope you played a long time! Was there anything you’d like to see, or anything I could do better? I plan to keep developing this title after the jam.

I wish I got around to the whole story, but I'm angry at myself for playing so long already.... I sort of wish there were a way to make the auctions go faster so I don't have to watch all the usual banter after I fade out, or so that turns went quicker between them. Perhaps I just need more county auctions, haha.

Clever how you put the story, the Walt's Kid decisions side of the story, and the auction+store simulator together to make a simulation of the pawn shop millieu.

Some items:

Menus can be hard to read when not in full-screen mode, because the current selection hovers over most of the menu. Maybe being able to pull up ledger anywhere would be convenient...

Perhaps I started with the wrong strategy, ... oh well. And I don't know what getting people's honest tells does me anyway....

That’s good feedback. It really is meant to be a full screen game. Glad you enjoyed it enough to spend a long time on it! I’d recommend adding it to your collection, if you want to see an ending later.

For the tweaks, I’ll have to work those after the jam. I appreciate your time and comments, so thank you very much!

It reminded me a lot of storage wars haha but there was a lot of information all at once. Maybe easing into it with an in game tutorial would be a little better but overall it was fun!

Developer

There is a lot to remember, because you’re not just playing the money game, you’re also playing the story. It’s like a few games intertwined, and you have to balance them and make them work. It is a lot of info to parse, which is more suited to a sit-down-and-dive-in session than a jam rating session, admittedly. I appreciate you taking the time to play and comment, so thank you for that! And especially, thank you for saying it was fun!

Yeah its definitely tricky for a jam to get the scope right, I think I overscoped on my game as well

Developer

I wasn’t really worried about scope. This game was just something I began developing as this jam opened, and I was like, “alright, let’s enter and see what happens. 🤷🏽‍♂️” It’s very different from anything I’ve ever done before.
