Design Statement
When I first listened to the theme track, I felt a sense of longing, sadness, and hope. It made me think about a journey through a vast, lonely place, where the world is beautiful but something terrible has happened.
That became the foundation for Waddan, a short narrative game inspired by Libyan folklore, the desert landscapes of North Africa, and the history of colonialism.
You play as a young villager who volunteers to help a wounded stranger by traveling into the desert in search of a mythical creature called the Waddan.
One of my biggest design choices was to make the journey itself the main experience. We wanted the player to feel the distance, silence, and isolation of the desert rather than filling the game with constant challenges. We spent a lot of time working on the sand, the camel's movement, the environment, and the sound to make traveling feel meaningful.
We also used old cave paintings scattered throughout the world to slowly reveal the story, allowing the player to discover what happened rather than explaining everything at once.

Game Instructions (launch steps, controls, and gameplay overview)
The game runs on web:
Controls
* WASD / Arrow Keys: Move
* Mouse: Look around
* Shift: Make the camel sprint
* E: Interact, mount/dismount the camel, and collect water
* Left Mouse Click / Space / Enter: Advance dialogue
* Esc: Release the mouse cursor
Gameplay
You play as a young villager traveling through the desert with a camel, searching for the mythical Waddan to save a wounded stranger.
Start by reaching the oasis and collecting water. From there, follow the glowing star that guides you toward paintings hidden throughout the desert.
You can discover the first three paintings in any order. Each reveals another part of the story. Once you've found all three, the final painting becomes available.
Take your time exploring the desert and discovering its story. There is no combat, and the experience is primarily about exploration, atmosphere, and narrative.

At first, I didn't follow the light, but even though it was a little laggy, I was able to enjoy it until the end. Good job.

Right from the start, I found myself completely immersed in the atmosphere of the game through its design and music.

Such an atmospheric game! Exploring the desert and uncovering each level made for a really engaging narrative. I especially love the inspiration drawn  Libyan folklore coupled with the sand dunes, it gives the whole experience a memorable vibe. Plus, having a browser-playable web build made jumping straight into it super easy. Great work to the team!

Reminds me of a game I scored for this year's GMTK, based on the Nomadic Tuareg people of the Sahara.

3D model and environment were very well done, despite a few bugs/glitches (Pool water being a 2D asset meant it didn't blend great with the curves of the sand). Wasn't expecting the camel to yeet itself across the desert like that, pretty cool. The sliding down the hill mechanic was a nice touch though.

I liked the ambience of the soundtrack but found the synths to be a bit too present. I would have liked the rest of the audio to cut through more, and leave a bit more room to breathe. Hearing more acoustic instruments would have been great too.  Gonna drop a reference I used back in July:

Using ambient lighting to guide players through the levels is a great idea! I can easily figure out where to go next. The visual design and music complement each other perfectly, making me feel completely immersed. The story based on Libyan folklore also sparked my curiosity to explore. The only downside is that, for some reason, the 3D game runs particularly choppy when played via the web. But I really appreciate that you made it available online, so I can play it without having to download anything. Good job!

I adore how much detail you've added to this game and its environment. From the ripples in the water when you try walk through it to the beautiful murals. The low poly models are so cool and I especially love the camel's design!! Combine all this with some beautiful music and world and you have an amazing game. <3
