that was kind of the vibe i got! Rot just felt very Only Possible Outcome of that choice, while Sun has a little more room to surprise the reader...which i guess says something about what those choices represent, in its own way. :^) appreciate the insight, fun to know the "meta"

ok i wasnt 100% sure how much of this was a first-time thing so i didnt put it in the initial comment, but i did think while playing "this is crazy tight for a first stab"!

i look forward to the next one! ^^

Really great short story. The visuals are really lovely accompaniment to the detailed writing. I found myself very charmed by both the collage work and illustration, it all felt very economically/smartly applied.

The writing itself feels very personal and specific in the best way, even with an essentially anonymized narrator. I think a little of that is due to the really gestural illustration, but also because the writing shows "only" what needs said for this particular vignette into her life.

There were a couple points where the audio wasn't doing it for me (the more diagetic approaches in the beginning with all the shuffley sounds, one or two of the track choices). I wanted more of those snappy twig sounds!

I found the Sun ending a lot more compellingly done than the Rot ending, to the point that the choice felt kind of "eh" or less impactful to me in hindsight. Didn't pull me out of my enjoyment, just felt like Sun had a lot more meat put on it. Maybe I just like happier endings.

Lots of great contrasts (Snowy's saccharine LLM-style platitudes compared to what she's saying, Dani's childish escapism and her very adult problems, what people actually say to Dani and how Dani interprets it all...) that had me cold-sweating in the last chunk of the story. So many little threads and ideas packed very masterfully into a really short amount of time and words! The narrative subverted my expectations about where things were going at basically every turn in a way that kept me reading.

Visuals, story length, and sound all do exactly what they need to; really respectably tight in scale and execution. Great read about how isolation, stagnation, shame, hurt, addiction, etc can shape a person.

Felt like reading a really fun and frenetic zine! Stuff just keeps happening and it's a fun ride the whole time.

The amount of art in this is also just straight up crazy for a jam game, let alone a solo project jam game. In that same zine-like way, the exact right amount of rough-on-the-edges, communicates-just-what-it-has-to is used throughout. The animated bits and bobs are real cute and enhance the visuals a lot. Very impressive!

My One sticking point is that the typewriter-y font (which is admittedly very cool, and adds to that Photocopied-a-million-times-over Underground Comics Feel) is REALLY difficult to read--especially in the NVL formatted scenes, and especially especially in NVL scenes with images behind the text. I didn't spot any options to swap the font in the preferences, but my bad if i missed it!

(1 edit)

a great short ero/gore/horror story wrapped up in some incredible presentation. very "cinematography" forward for a gamejam VN, to the point that it made me rethink some of my preconceived notions of what renpy is capable of doing. some of those visuals (that opening! that final screen! the framing on the just-limited-enough sprites!) will stick with me for a while.

the writing did err on opaque at times; it felt like some of the conversations between the baby fairy and panz could have been filled in a little more. the ending, for as much as i liked it, did come and go in a hurry and left me with a "...aw, it's over already?" feeling. but, i suppose i'd much rather that my intelligence be respected to "figure it out" or "fill in the blanks" than to read something overexplained. maybe i'm just no smarter than a fairy...

i could read a lot more of it, is what i'm saying! a great experience.

A delightfully intense experience. The sound, the use of limited visuals (both in terms of color as well as very literally limiting your visuals), and the passionate dialogue make this tight, tense encounter vice-grip you the entire length of this short story.

Another point I was particularly impressed with: ExS both wears influences on its sleeve and completely shirks them off for something that feels at once familiar and "lived in" and also completely new. Really impressive stuff being done here!
