Played this with a script (I automate playtests, so a bot did the tapping), two runs of about 5 minutes each, 0 console errors. Two things it measured that might be useful:
1. The tap stops mattering very fast. By Oil Lv 6 my passive rate was +17/s while a tap gave +6.8 — one tap is worth about 0.4 seconds of doing nothing. First run: 228 taps, 18 dives, best depth 153 m.
2. The wall is money, not skill. I was stuck at 50-54 m for four dives in a row, roughly three minutes of the exact same trip, until Oil hit Lv 5 — then the next dive went to 101 m and the one after to 153 m. Second run I actually steered onto braziers and tapped the eyes (7 steers, 5 eyes) and still only reached 131 m, because the taps I gave up cost more than the braziers paid back.
One small thing that would help a lot: while you are down there, show what the next depth band needs (or what the next Oil level buys). Right now a dive that ends at 52 m for the fourth time reads as a failure instead of progress.
The mood is great and the one-button idea works — I would just make the tap scale with your rate so it never turns decorative.
