Polly surprised me greatly! That was a fun playthrough, definitely could see this being expanded! Now that I read you're an audio guy, I'm so sorry for doing that bird-bard minigame of mine so poorly haha.
Also this may be the closest to deadline submission I've seen haha, congrats on making it on time!
It's absolutely not a you thing! We weren't very sure how to make that one work and was the last done in a rush. We thought "just play enough notes to make it feel deliverate and show that you know how to swing by holding up and down", so the goal is simply to play 18 notes or so. The hint was something I thought would read as "just trust what you're doing" but I've find some people overthinking it too much haha.
Thank you so much!
The good:
Everything from music to graphics to level design and GB feel! Mayybe some things such as the selection screen feel a bit too archaic in comparison to the GB (seems you're changing scenes instead of redrawing tiles for the changes) but that's just nitpicking, because the rest is impolute! Very charming and absolutely impressive for a jam entry.
The mixed:
Was it really required to have the items as enemy drops and making you lose them at a hit? I found the backtracking a bit tedious ngl, I prefered reseting on some ocassions instead.
The bad:
The spikes are unfair! when you approach them from the sides they shouldn't kill you, lost countless times to those. Also the trash bag in 1-5 doesn't read as an instant death thing, I find it very annoying, I'd prefer it being friendly but dropping oil to mess up your movement, or anything else!
You certainly have some interesting mechanics, but maybe they're too many and not well explained. If there's friction even trying to climb a rope, there's a problem. I think most of it would be solved with a less minimal UI that showed what every button action currently is, what amount of items you have and how much the bag is slowing you down.
I found throwing mid jump then catching the bag in a lighter jump a fun gameplay experience, trying to aim well so you don't lose your progress. I think adding to that tand dialing back on how limited the rest of the items are would make a more satisfactory game.
I also found some background elements hard to grasp if they blocked the way or not, it didn't seem too consistent. I think adding more colors would help. I know the GB is limited, but this reads more as 2 bit than 8.
Congrats on making something this deep mechanically on time!
