Really cool experimental album. My favorite track was Minstrel. Those vocals paired with the guitar really hit me for some reason lol.

I really enjoyed the different timbres this album explores. But I just feel like they are too short T.T Like by the time I'm fully immersed in the storytelling of the track, it ends and goes the next song (a different idea). No. 7, 8, and 9 are definitely really different too

I really enjoyed your work here in how genuinely it feels like it portrays itself. I think my favorite track was Minstrel Meanderings because of your careful use of breaks. Thanks for sharing!

I think this started as the most "suspense" album I have heard so far. Musical phrases from the first tracks are short but require our attention right from the very first note. The pinnacle of this would be The King Ascendant! Then the album makes me feel either lost in space and time (e.g. Herbalist) or comforted as being with friends by the fire (e.g. Minstrel Meanderings, Little Bird). Finally, with As The Pages Turn we seem to go on a kind of travel, who knows if into that lost medieval town you talked about. A very interesting set of diverse musical ideas, thank you for sharing :)

I really liked the sound of this soundtrack early on. The orchestral/electronic blend works really well, the instrumentation is consistently interesting, and there’s enough variety between tracks that it still feels like one world. I also liked the bard noodling because it felt diegetic and added some character to the setting rather than just being another score cue.

Where you lost me a little was around track 6, when it starts leaning much more into folk and lullaby territory. The songs themselves are well done and sound good, but to me it felt like a pretty sudden stylistic shift from what had been established before. By the final track especially, I almost felt like I was listening to the ending of a different game than the one that opened with that beautiful orchestral main title.

I do think there’s a story here, but I could’ve used a little more context to understand what kind of world I was inhabiting and what caused that shift. Still, there’s a lot of really strong music here, and I loved the sound palette throughout. Really well done

Thanks for listening, and for giving some feedback! There is definitely a story going on here that I'm not doing a particularly great job of getting across - and the soundtrack suffers in exactly the way you have described. I was writing this while developing a game for a concurrent game jam, so I was operating on the game itself giving the context for these tracks - but failing to remember that the soundtrack itself is being presented alone. Again, thanks for checking out the soundtrack!

First of all, I commend anyone who records live instruments during these jams. I quite liked the ambient pieces as well as the orchestral snippet in Sequitur. Since Little Bird and Little Fish are quite similar, I think having just one major, happy-sounding song may have landed better, and maybe have a slower minor key song to sing over, or alternatively, Mixolydian rather than Ionian. Because the ambient pieces prepared me for a darker sound overall which is why I love As the Pages Turn so much. It’s also just a great song with a great melody, awesome vocal performance, satisfying arc, and cool use of 7/8 time signature. It’s such a nice ending for a soundtrack like this. Great work here!

Thanks for the kind words! Agree about the modal swap - although I'm more of a dorian stan :)

Some production issues, but not enough to fail the amazing creativity that came in the second half of the project !

I liked the direction you took with these compositions, particularly with the second half where you integrate your singing voice into it. I haven't heard much submissions at all where the person making the tracks is singing on it as well so kudos!

That being said, I feel like the quality of the compositions in the first half is held back by what fits with the second half of the compositions and that's the feel of the recording quality. It feels like the space of the compositions in the first half was working against those tracks as I feel like it's way too distant and tinny (Herbalist in particular has some very piercing resonances, and Sequitur feels too distant to sound grandiose). I think the recording quality works for the second half of the tracks (where it leans into the very indie/acoustic vibe) but not the first half.

Otherwise, great work on this :D

Thanks for the feedback. Many of the first tracks are meant to be barely louder than the atmos, kind of a blurring between sound design, music and atmosphere. But I agree with Sequitur - it needed another pass of levelling. This period of writing was very short as I was developing the game alongside it over a weekend... if I had a whole week of time to spare then the tracks would definitely have benefitted. Appreciate the thoughts!

i quite like the ambient feel the first half of the ost and the guitar performances on the second half! the guitar especially gives that homemade vibe that i think could really fit this "lost village" feel where i'd imagine a lone person sing to no audience in particular. I do wish there was a bit more of a connection between these two ideas as to make the ost more coherent. I will say the vocal harmony was very cool! though it could definitely benefit from more compression+reverb to make the space more full. Pretty cool stuff!

Very confused on how I feel about this. Everything before "little bird" is kinda boring and I dont even remember any of it and I just listend to it. But everything after? Amazing. Simply great and it actully got me to feel something. The folk things seem to be your strong suit but you still need to work on the production side of things. Also on the last track when the drums come in it kinda drowns everything out. Also the drum sample themselves dont really fit the vibe of the rest of the track and they sometimes dont sound on beat.

Thanks for taking the time to write this! Appreciate it

Yeah of course! Im always happy to give constructive criticism and try to help someone out. how long have you been producing for anyway?

Developer

Hard to say! maybe 14 years? I mean there's a difference between writing music and producing music. The orchestral music that I used to write was always performed live, no production required :D
