Wonderfully disgusting! The whole look and feel of the meat, from the texture to the pulsing and heartbeat, was absolutely awesome. The pacing of the game was solid too. Just as I was starting to lose interest by the end of week 3, we move on and end the story. The dialogue leading into week 4 built a nice little bit of suspense as well.
My only real complaint is that the radar doesn't really work if you move it too quickly. You have to pan it across the meat very slowly to get a decent reading.
Overall, a great (and technically impressive) entry into the genre of low-poly, meat-based horror games!
Thanks!! Haha yeah there's only so much enjoyment that can come from digging meat lmao. I was hoping that 3 wasn't tooo much and I'm glad it was in the right spot for you!
I did wanna make the scanner work better, but I ended up crunching a lot of the more scripted mechanics like the scanner on the last day, and I had to settle for something that worked "good enough".
Thanks for playing! :)
Gross! I now have an airborne, pulsating, shiny meat glob
Wish list:
Impressive performance in web for a 3d game! Especially with deformable terrain.
I also love the mouse-locking. It’s done exactly at the right times!
Thanks for playing! There were supposed to be chains visually holding the meat glob up but I never got to it so it may just float :P
I'll definitely try and add mouse sens sliders and faster text skip next time!
Absolutely disturbingly wonderful. I felt so bad digging into that chunk of meat lol. It felt so alive. I really like the ominous tone. Well done!
Would've loved to have more tools and maybe different goals with the meat.
The phone calls was a nice touch.
Was also impressed with how you made the chunk of meat, technically.
Congrats!
Thanks for playing! And for the feedback! :)
Wow that was awful...I loved it! That meat texture is burned into my eyeballs now, ugh, and I used to work in a meat department.
Great work! The visuals, sounds, concept were absolutely nailed. I had some trouble with the scanner. I didn't realize I had to move slower with it. Also, I dug to deep and greedily at one point and almost couldn't reach the last piece of meat. Maybe add a ladder or something you can move around?
Now I want steak....
Thanks for playing!! I'm glad it was awful haha! The digging and the scanning are not 100% what I wanted them to be, they are a bit janky (like the scanner beeping not being 100% responsive and the meat digging sometimes digging a bunch/sometimes not digging at all) and the meat spawning too high was def a concern that I thought of,. but I didn't get to fully address before submitting. A ladder would have been a good idea!
Very cool game. I love the concept and the grossness of the meat. The visuals look great and it was fun shoveling away at the meat trying to find the high quality stuff. I think it'd be nice if there was some visual indicator on the scanner as well as the sound, I didn't realize at first that it was only a sound based thing so I was kinda shoveling aimlessly for a bit. Great work, a very nice weird game!
Really cool game. Loved the style, graphics, it was very functionally and visually "unpleasant", intentionally I suppose. It made me very anxious to dig that meat without knowing what it is. It reminded me a lot of Bloodborne's Brain of Mensis. Unforunately I dig through half of the thing when I needed to find two quality meats. I'm not sure if I'm dumb or the detector doesn't work very well, but even so had a great time with it. Solid entry.
I'm sorry that you had trouble with it., the detector may be a bit janky... I didn't have much time for playtesting and that is def something I need to work on next jam to make sure everything is clear. Others had the High Quality Meat spawn up too high to reach as well, so I def needed to do some tweaking. Thanks for playing!! :)
Game was great ! Loved the style and how dark the ambiance was and how the "meat sphere" was.
At one point, the high quality meat spawned way to high and found no way to get to it. Had to reset my game.
Still, was quite suprised about the quality of this game !
Had a blast.
Very cool! The story added a lot to the feeling of suspense before you go through the door. Nice effects and polish. The wait for the door to open is a bit long, and I wish you could hold down left click to dig. Any resources for doing marching cubes in Godot?
Thanks for the feedback!
I followed this approach for marching cubes in general: https://paulbourke.net/geometry/polygonise/. You can check out the source code for my game if you wanna see how I did it. (Though it's in a GD extension). And I use a chunking approach similar to Sebastian Lague's though his is in Unity I believe.
If you wanna mess around with it, I'd advise to just follow Paul Bourke's algorithm and implement it in GDScript first. And use the SurfaceTool class to build the mesh from the list of vertices generated by the algorithm.
If you really wanna understand it you can try marching squares as a 2D version to better understand the algorithm behind marching cubes. Which I also have in Godot here and this video by The Coding Train explains it well.
I think you can possible make it super performant using compute shaders, but unfortunately web builds don't support them so I didn't try to in this game.
Hope this helps! And thanks for playing!
Nice take on the theme, very gross, I particularly like how the beating gets faster if you harvest too much. Nice job.
Thanks!!
The phrase “High Quality Meat” will never be the same for me.
I legit love this game. Creepy and atmospheric in just the right way. The “harvest tool” is just a rusty shovel. So good.
I don’t know if anyone else noticed, but the computer screen is open to the Wikipedia page on Betaarterivirus suid 1. Neat little detail.
Brilliant visuals. Brilliant audio. Creepy storytelling. The vibes are just right here.
Great work!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm so glad the vibes came off the way I wanted it to! Thanks for playing :)
Finaly. Some high quality meat.
Mmmm meat.
A truly horrible experience, thank you
Haha glad you think so! :)
Awesome! You nailed the way that the meat looks and feels. The heartbeat and mesh deformation sounds / effects were awesome. Fun experience!
Thanks for playing!! I'm glad you liked the meat! I was really happy with how it turned out! I'll check out your game tomorrow! :)
Very nice, I found the high quality meat but I couldn't figure out how to get to it
Edit: Restarted and tried again, had a couple similar high ones I was able to jump and spam click to get. Was confusing since that was the first one I found, thought maybe I had to excavate stairs to climb the meat
Otherwise really nice job! I love how realistic the "meat" looks, no idea how you did that. And getting 3d game working decent in the browser can be challenging, but it worked well on my machine.
You are supposed to kinda tunnel through the meat to make a staircase to reach the higher up ones. I tried making them spawn not-so-high up to prevent it being super hard to reach, but I think I could have made it even lower.
The meat is 2 flesh PBRs I found online which I blend together using noise based on uv world-position. I made it squirm using a vertex shader that just pulsates along the vertex normal according to world position blended noise. It does sometimes mess up the geometry but it's good enough :p
The mesh is generated using marching cubes but it has the surface generation in a GDExtension using c++ which allows it to run faster especially on the web. It is def very hard to try and eliminate lag on web builds. The loading screen also has all the geometry and shaders/particles run in a very low opacity viewport to try and eliminate caching stutter but it's still existent regardless.
Thanks for playing!! Were you able to reach the ending?
Interesting, thanks for the explanation. Cool stuff
Yes I was able to reach the ending! (on my 2nd try)
Incredibly visually polished. I loved the atmosphere and gross animations. If I could make an adjustment, it would be to have the options be accessible during the gamelpay and for more mouse control options. Also worked just fine on Safari for me :) - ANTIHERO Harley
Thanks for playing! Yeah I thought about including mouse sens options but it was too late ;-; also yeaa i screwed up with the options not being accessible mid game. Thanks for the feedback!
