Game Description
Craft weapons, level up your character, and challenge mystical creatures in this endless RPG adventure!

How does your game tie into the theme?
Throughout the game, the character grows in the sense of aging, and this moves both the plot and the concept of upgrades every X years that pass (explanation for the plot in the introduction and in the last dialogue when finding the tree).

Fantastic work, as always! I eventually stopped in my 50s because I still hadn’t found any gold to make the level 7 sword or dagger. It, understandably, got a little repetitive having gone so far but I still really enjoyed it. One funny thing is my brain kept seeing the nose ring as a pacifier.

Developer

Thank you for testing pdil! Im sorry that you couldn't craft the last weapons, the dagger one is definitely my preferred!

Regarding the recipe items, if you mouse over them in the craft panel, a tooltip appears in the top of the screen with some tips on how to get it. The gold ore can be found specifically in the ground mines (it requires you stepping on them). But I should have made it clearer anyways.

Ngl, I also see a pacifier in the character sprites haha, it was totally unintentional though

Thank you again!

Your focus on even the subtle details, like the texturing on the dialogue boxes, make this feel incredibly well-polished!  And your art style is very charming!  The UI elements are quite small for me on a 4k monitor, though the text is still readable.

Developer

Hi Mjb, thank you for the review!

In my last games, I used to enforce the game to scale with the screen size, in this one I didn't though, because it was being unsatisfactory for both big and small screens (font too small, or font unnecessarily big). I tested on my 2k monitor and it worked fine, unfortunately it gets a bit weird on 4k screens. I still have to found a solution for this 🤔

Do you mean that setting the project's stretch mode to canvas_items did not give you the results that you wanted?  If that is the case, you could look into using stretch scale.  Or if it is just the font size that you want to adjust, you could use the size available to the Label to determine what size to make the font.

I'm not sure if any of that is helpful to you or if I fully understand the issue that you encountered, but if there is some way I can help, feel free to reach out to me here or on Discord (my username is Mjb117).  I'd be happy to discuss any of this further.

Amazing entry! Super well-polished and super fun. I just felt like the landmines were coming from a different universe. Other than that, I love the bestiary, evolution, and approach to the theme. Congrats!

Developer (1 edit)

Hey Turb, I low key love you for noticing that 😄

At first, I was into making this game a post apocalyptic world, where humans got wiped, and other species got into their own "middle ages". I know, it sounds weird.

And that's how it started, some random "tech" elements inside this sword and shield world. The thing is that I ran out of time, and I couldn't add any other context for this back story, and the only things left were the mines, and some "tech" marks on the walls.

That said, thank you for reviewing!

Your art looks good as always, you've got your style down pat. If I don't defeat all enemies before using the forge, the enemies-remaining symbol covers up the x button on the forge, softlocking me. Since no one else mentioned it, it must be a problem with just my resolution. Fun game otherwise!

Thanks for the review horned bird, unfortunately this is an a bug, in case you happen to play again in the future, you just have to open the game in Fullscreen

Awesome visuals and polished UI. Great job as always!

Thank you, Gammagoat for another review 😊

Super nice game, I really liked the designs, the choice of sound and musics and mostly how you made the game feel fresh each run I played ! Im really happy with what i've played. It's hard to believe that you did this all by yourself, and I say this as a huge compliment ! Hope to see more of your work and will definitely go back to play this game after the game jam.

Developer

Hey, I'm really glad to hear that you liked it! Regarding the amount of content, this is my 8th participation on GWJs, so for sure I have a lot of utils stuff that makes it easier to create newer games, but still, it was a ton of work, specially creating the art props 😄

Really solid and a decent challenge (but never unfair feeling) as you get acclimated to it.

These are the "dark" vibes I can enjoy - spooky, but not overbearingly grim; actually, it's a bit wondrous and mystical! Maybe it's also thanks to the sounds and music that paint that picture.

Developer

Hello, Undine, I'm glad you liked the spooky atmosphere. This is something I always try to bring to my games. Thank you so much for the review!

Great work! Really liked the music and atmosphere of the game! :D

It took me a while to find the crafting station xD maybe you could make it stand out out more by adding a glow or something? Once I found it, though, the game was really fun to play!

A minor comment, the size of the font was a bit too small for me. Maybe you could add setting in the menu to control for it.

In any case, great submission!

Lawn mower simulator is a great game 10/10

Developer(+1)

Ah man, "mower simulator" is so good haha, I'll start referring to the game that way from now on 😂

Wow! Beautiful visuals! Love the style, love the UI. Very polished, very fun! Love it! Congrats :)

I found this to be a solid and enjoyable game with a cool aesthetic. I loved how the character grew over time both visually and gameplay wise. Also the UI is incredibly polished. The game did crash during one of my longer runs which was quite unfortunate, but overall a great time! - ANTIHERO Harley

Developer

Hi Harley, thank you so much for playing and reviewing!

I'm glad you enjoyed it, and I apologize for the crash, unfortunately, it must have been a use case I didn't anticipate. If you remember what caused the error (where you were in the game, where you clicked, etc.) I'd love to know so I can fix it in a future version!

Thanks again for the review and the kind words 😁

Really great work. It’s fun to see you move away from puzzle / strategy and into something more action based. UI and loading screens are really well done and the crafting mechanics are great. I wasn’t at all ready for one of the trees to start moving lol.

Would have loved the camera to be slightly more zoomed out and maybe the dash recharge indicator to be somewhere near the cursor. Maybe spin the dark circle around the cursor for attack recharge, and spin the white for dash.

Developer (1 edit)

Hi LGWV, thanks for the review,

I'm glad you had fun, when I started developing the tree enemy, I somehow confused last month's wildcard (mimic) with this one, but yes, the idea is to go unnoticed... until it's too late haha 😅

Thanks again 🙏

Edit: Btw, you mentioned some very good points, Ill definitely try to move the dash charges closer to the character!

Submitted

Really nice visuals. Gameplay reminded me a bit of your previous entries :). I really wanted the dash to make me invincible to get through the monsters. Maybe that is an upgrade I missed. My favorite part was the attack mechanic and swinging the weapons around. Could be an interesting accessibility option to have the character walk with the weapon so you only need one hand. Would probably make the traps brutal though.

I was going back and forth if I wanted a visual indicator to help show what was destructible vs not. It is easy to learn, and you make restarting very quick which helps when you die.

Developer

Hi Chipper, thank you for another review!

I really agree with your points, the idea of one-handed movement seems very interesting, I will definitely do some tests on that!

Fun game! Very good visuals!

Another CCadori masterpiece! Awesome submission, loved maximizing dagger + attack speed, that was pretty fun!

Developer(+1)

Thank you, Barbosa, this is also my prefered weapon haha, seems like everyone liked the lawn mower build 😂

Super well polished game, runs like a dream. I enjoyed it very much.
As usual top notch visuals and audio. This time around very good gameplay for my taste.
Who can beat my elderly (71) chainsaw dagger of doom protagonist?!

Developer

Thank you very much for another review, Ollibanjo, I must confess that this is also my favorite weapon/build 😅

Submitted(+1)

As always, the presentation is gorgeous. You’ve really carved out a niche though I’d also find it very interesting to what happens when you try to deviate from your established style a bit. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this one. The way you implemented attacking is very smart, I don’t think I’ve seen this kind of mechanic in a top down action rpg before. The game is also very accessible, though I don’t think it fully matches the theme. All in all though, really well done, keep up the good work.

Developer

Hello Nubels,

I'm glad you had fun, I tested several types of attack mechanics until I found one that worked for my style (both artistic and logical).

I really stuck to a mainly artistic style in this last year of GWJs, sometimes I deviate a bit, but never too much haha 😅

Thank you very much for the kind review!
