Overall fun and playability#203.3183.318

Ranked from 22 ratings. Score is adjusted from raw score by the median number of ratings per game in the jam.

Theme incorporation
Since this is a minimalistic crawler: It's a treasure hunt!

Due to my 64KB (uncompressed) size limit is misses a map and other nice to have features)

Hints: You do not need to find all the secrets to win! Collecting 99 feathers either by finding treasure or through combat (which will scale with level, higher will reward more).

Amiga! WOW! This is so impressive! I loved that it played quickly with autocombat and simple conversation text that wasn't cumbersome to get past. This let me focus on getting around. Super impressive job, well done!

I dig the adherence to the retro look, but man I was lost.  I just didn't have the wherewithal to find my way about and always managed to find myself going in endless circles.  I can't imagine this is gonna be fun to watch:

Developer(+1)

Hey thanks for recording and the feedback!

After watching the recording I noticed two things.

First of all there are spinners to make things more difficult. If you look at the chat you will see a *?*  in the color of LeChick. Looks like you ran into the same spinner multiple times :-)

At around the 4:30 mark you get destroyed by the OP crazy hens and starting from there you are stuck in the broken gamestate reset mentioned in the known bugs. Which means you will start over at lvl 1 and lose every fight to start over at lvl 1... Nasty bug, game state does not reset entirely. Sorry about that.

Thanks a lot!

It is one brilliant title. I explored it for a while and I think I found 5 secrets, those circle things / feathers. I didn’t have the energy to map out a way to actually collect all in the same run though.

The auto battle was nice, but after a couple of resets, I really would have liked to have a fast forward feature to not have to wait it through. And similarly, the resting, in part because the crazy hens were so OP felt more like a punishment (since all it did was to have the player wait, with no in-game resource being spent). The random encounters could happen to quick in succession too.

I did enjoy mapping it out though, for the most part. I got a bit tired when I realized I had missed being teleported, but that actually gave me a hint to a feather I had initially missed.

I very much liked that every other tile had a square on them (once I figured out what it was, first I felt it was a trapdoor) to help navigating and having while having instant step.

So it’s really a pity that we didn’t get to explore it with more balanced crazy hens so one wasn’t on an invisible step counter until death. But otherwise very impressive retro entry!

Developer

Wow thank you for playing and recording this very throughout run. Highly appreciated!

Resting the party, especialy at higher levels, got get tiresome really quickly as it was doing a flat amount of recovering and therefor it would take longer to fully recover. I am gonna change it so it scales with the level. I had to cut some corners to make it fit into 64KB though. The current build is down to 62KB so I have some headroom to add new functionality and I am planning on using this for a post-jam update.

Thank you for your time and valuable feedback!

Simple and very fun game :D

I liked that the combat was automatic, made it easier to breeze trough the dungeon - and it's a bit addictive.

Only thing I found a bit less obvious is the cracked wall - if it is a cracked wall. Basically the normal wall graphic but with 2 dots. It might be a glitch.

Developer (2 edits)

Actually the walls with the two dots are illusionary walls that you can walk through. Maybe there are secrets behind them, or shortcuts.

Did not want to make them to obvious and not to hard to find them either, so I made them two separate dots in case the mouse pointer would cover one of them accidentally.

Thank you for playing and the kind feedback.

Great Amiga nostalgia! Simple but still fun. Enjoyed the add of texts during the game.
Well done!

Developer

Thank you for taking the time to play it and the kind feedback.

I am glad you got some fun/nostalgia out of it.

I managed to map the upper portion of the map and find all 5 feathers. I even managed to kill two crazy hens by pure luck, but the next bunch wiped my party.

I loved the true retro of this game, making it in 64KB and for Amiga is a great technical challenge! I found dialogue to be hilarious and overall dungeon to be a real maze with so many secret passages.

Battle system works and if crazy hens would be a little less powerful I would definitely enjoy farming experience and levels in this game, feels like a good mix of idle and crawler! Another thing to maybe try out is to assign enemy probabilities to different areas, so you’ll have weaker enemies around the spawn point and tougher enemies further away, this will have a natural progression feel to the dungeon in my opinion and provide a way to place really powerful enemies which will block last feathers or something valuable.

Great job!

Developer

Thanks for taking the time to explore the dungeon. Hope you got some fun out of it despite the crazy hen's.

I was considering placeing the different hen type in differend zone but then went with scale by level approach but I think I could combine both. So the type is tied to the quadrant and the quantity scales with level.

Does that sound reasonable?

As for the idle/grind playstyle. There are some equipable weapons and additional potions in the game but they are not obtainable in the jam version. They will be in the post-jam version.

Thanks for the kind feedback!

Submitted(+1)

Yes, I think that kind of scaling sounds interesting to explore :) I would definitely try it out!

Looking forward to post-jam version!

Submitted(+1)

Congratulations on the technical limitation, I love this kind of challenge!
I haven't managed to finish the game because I get killed by the “crazy hens” every time.
Is there a special strategy for winning the fight, or does it mostly depend on the RNG?

Developer

Ah yes the crazy hens are a bit OP. Buffed them close to the deadline without proper play testing them. My biggest regret this jam :(

Sorry!

Submitted(+1)

Great little retro crawler. Awesome that you've got this much game in 64KB! I can't imagine what it takes to make something with those limitations, it must take some serious skill. The game played well, and the combat was automatic but well described. I love it when party members have banter! I had fun playing! I was moving around so fast that I didn't realize that I was about to wipe out on the first playthrough, but I had a good run on the second.

Developer(+1)

If you think about it, what makes today games big? 99.9999% of the games are textures and video and audio. If you cut all that out it is a lot easier to get down to the 100KB mark and if you have ever done anything on this type of machines or in the embedded controller field you have some more tricks up your sleeve ;-)

Thanks for playing and the kind feedback!

Great retro game, I did not expect to see a game made to do with Amiga, great work with that. The game was fun to play, good to explore and it was good reading what the characters were saying. Overall I enjoyed my time with your game and it is really nice to see classic style like this. I would love to play an updated version after the jam is over.

Developer

Thank you for playing and your kind feedback.

An updated version is almost done and is waiting for the upload restriction to be lifted.

Cheers!

Submitted(+1)

I love what you made here! I hope you will release a slightly more tuned version after the jam so we can experience the rest of the game :P

Amazing work!

If you would like to watch my playthrough, you can find it here: https://youtu.be/3jola3DjjKw

Developer(+1)

Hey Captain Coder!

Thank you for your kind words and taking the time to play the game and recording it. Highly appriciated!

And your are right, buffing the crazy hens without verifying the effect is my biggest regret this time.

The quad on the ground is drawn every 2nd tile just as an visual feedback that your are actually moving, this helps in the long corridors to get a sense of the movement.

You where also right that the HP of LeChick reflects the current feathers count. Maybe he got a hit despite his high luck value. Resting should bring him up to the correct health. Basically each feather increases his HP by one but also decreases his luck by the same amount, until he reaches 100 HP and turns on you. You are nurishing him until he thinks he is strong enough to finish you off!

I do have a bug fixed version already, it just waits until the upload restriction is lifted.

Thank you for your feedback!

Thanks for replying! I can’t wait to play the patched version 😁

Very interesting game. I included it in my compilation video series of all of the games from the Dungeon Crawler Jam.

Developer

Hey! Thanks a lot for playing and recording!

It is really awesome of you to record all of the jam entries and give them a broader audience.

Much appreciated!

Submitted(+1)

Amazing that you did this on the Amiga in just 9 days!

The sense of humor in here is great, and I enjoyed the banter between the party members. No, it’s not annoying :D

I managed to find 5 secrets (eggs?), but the crazy hens kept wiping me out.

You had me bust out the grid paper, so thank you for bringing me back to my youth playing (and failing) Wizardry :)

Honestly, there’s so much polish here, not just in the gameplay, the banter, but also the textmode menus. Really well done.

Developer

Thank you very much, this means a lot to me.

I grew up with the Amiga so it was more of a rembering how stuff works then to learn it from scratch. The Amiga will always have a special place in my heart :)

Unfortunatly it is not as polished as I would like it to be. There is the game state reset bug, the crazy hens are too OP, I messed up and used an older version of the map that only has 5 secrets and not 10! And Cryptrat also found an exploit for the potions.

I should know better then to do last minute/hour changes...

Thanks for your kind feedback!

Submitted(+2)

Mapping the game was a fun challenge with the crazy chickens which wouldn't let me do it.

I spent an indecent amount of time trying different strategies with picking secret feathers at different points around the level 5, exploiting the bug with the potions so that they get 255 (they need to use their last one themselves then when the number is 0 I manually use one, with health potions it's not easy though as they rarely use one before the fight againt the crazy chickens) to beat the crazy chickens, I beat them once once totally by chance but it's not like it mattered, some more came and killed a party member of course. I don't know if the 5 secrets are enough to jump from level 5 to 6 but anyway picking the 5 without getting attacked seem unlikely, I managed to get 4 once but didn't reach level 6.

I can only like an Amiga game but it's cool, I like the presentation, the silly dialogs and I enjoyed trying to do my best.

(1 edit) (+2)

Haha, seems like we were playing and mapping at the same time.

I stumbled over the same issue, didnt see any exploit, but I basically just ignored the potions. The thing is, that once you get to level 5 you are completely healed, and that triggers the crazy hens which always kill you. It is however easily posible to get all 5 featghers:

Head East right from the start, through the secret, then around the corner through the secret wall to the feather in the northeast. Now go back through the secret wall, but don't go west. Instead go east and jump into the teleporter. That brings you back to the starting position. Now go south and collect the other 3.

However...even with 5 feathers I always die and I never got to level 6.

Developer(+1)

I am truly amazed. I did not thought anyone would be able to map it out given the current state of the crazy hens. I just checked it and the map is accurate and that highlights another issue. It's is an older version of the map that indeed only contains 5 secrets, 1 teleport and 2 spinners *cry*
It looks like I broke more on the last couple of hours then I repaired. The potion exploit is also a good catch!

My biggest regret so far is buffing the crazy hens to much so nobody gets to see when LeChick drops the veil.

So my todo list looks like this:

  • fix the game state reset bug
  • fix the crazy hens
  • use the correct level map
  • fix the potions
  • complete the loot/equip system

First two points are already done but of curse not published yet.

I am very very grateful for your valuable feedback and your endurance!

Thanks a ton!

Lutz

Submitted(+1)

I had the chance and play it early and it came a long why and that even tho Lutz didn’t want to join the Jam in the first place! ;) For that it’s even more impressive what you’ve got here!

I really like the old school style / visuals and the funny talks when you move through the dungeon. The auto-combat is also well done and quick! I found like 2 secrets but didn’t manage to find the “exit” ;/

It’s a very nice game and very impressive that you did it in C for Amiga. Do you still have some real Amiga hardware to try it on, would be nice to see it running there :)?

Developer

Hey Jan!

Thanks for all the play testing you have done! All the wireframe glory of the 80s is the street I grew up on. I can't recall how many hours I spent playing "Elite" on the C64 at like 5 FPS or so :D

So it triggers a certain area of my brain.

Unfortunately I do not own an Amiga anymore. I had to sell mine when I went to university in the 90s and the use of Microsoft Office became a mandatory thing. I had to buy an PC instead because I could not afford to keep the Amiga *cry*.

Buying an Amiga again was always in my mind for decades at least until I became a parent. And today it is kind of hard to buy an real Amiga at a price that is not completely ridiculous.

I was hoping someone who owns a real Amiga would give it a go and provide some feedback. Amiga emulators are great these days but they are not the real deal after all.

Thanks for your kind words!

Cheers!

Egg of the beholder! I'm very impressed you made this to work native on Commodore Amiga within only 64kb size limit. I hesitate sometimes with the minimal/wireframe graphics and little else, but as I kept playing I kept wanting to go further to actually beat it. I think my best bet here would have been busting out the graph paper (as the party dialogue suggests lol!) to track down the feathers and win. Perhaps it was intended, but by the time I hit level 5 I just kept getting crushed by the Crazed Hens. Was I on the right track that finding the secrets efficiently before hitting level 5 was the strategy to winning?

The dialogue was funny and the auto battling made things easy, but wish there was some element of strategy because I almost never needed to rest and even fully rested I died the first encounter every time at level 5.

My gameplay here at 1hr03m mark

Developer

Wow thanks for playing and recording it! Really appreciate it.

At first I was like "Oh no he is trapped inside the bug-loop" but was glad you realized it. The map is not too big, just 32x32 but there are some spinners and teleporters (sorry!, not sorry!).

You did very well and it is not your fault. At first the crazy hen's where to weak so I made them stronger. I think the change would have been okay if there  is only one hen, but for two or three its obviously to strong at the current state of game. There is a partially implemented inventory/equip and loot system in place along with some items that are in the game but since the system does not work yet, there are basically unobtainable. The items would give a considerable boost to attack and defense as well as additional potions to make things a lot smoother.

You can press "C" to switch to the character/party inspect screen to page through the party to see the inventory and available potions, equipped weapon and active skills.

Resting does help because then the characters will not use a turn to drink a potion and potions are a limited resource so you do not want to waste them early on.

LeChick starts with 1 HP but 99 Luck so while he is very vulnerabel he also has a 99% parry/crit change. With each feather found his HP increases but the luck decreases. Once he got to 100 HP (or 99 collected feathers) he will turn on you for the final battle.

Looks like I missed the unintentional high RNG dependency for the crazy hens, I will make sure to tone them down (or finish the equip/loot system) so you do not have to face them in a bare-knuckle fight.

Oh and yes, looking to the sides or strafe bumping may help you find other illusion walls (there a quite a few).

I am glad you could get some fun out of it! Gonna check out yours tonight.

Very nostalgic retro-style game I enjoyed but must admit I got lost more than I would have liked lol. The dialog was also a nice touch. Great work!

Sick game!

Submitted(+1)

Hey there! I enjoyed the auto battle system. I had fun getting lost in the dungeon!

Submitted(+1)

Interesting approach to the jam and a good challenge. I'm not a fan of final fantasy type of combat but the gameplay was fluent. I had some issues navigating and got lost. A map would help here a lot I think, even if just a toggle. Maybe something to build on for future project.

Nice work!

Developer

Hey thanks for playing and the feedback.

My artificial 64KB size limit did not allow a map feature, sorry but you have to fallback to pen and paper for tracking.

There is a fallback though, you do not have to find all secrets to win. The basic loop is to find feathers either through the secrets which grant 10 feathers or through the scaling combat. SPOILER: When you have 99 feathers, LeChick will reveal that it is in fact the Beholder and you go into the final Boss fight. Would be best if you reached at least level 6 at this point.

Submitted(+1)

Pros: I like the auto-battler a lot. I like that my characters get stronger with experience. There's something very soothing about the general vibe.

Cons: I got lost in the dungeon. I'm not sure when an encounter is about to start so it's hard to play strategically -- I just kind of went wherever and hoped for the best. It was hard to stay motivated to find all the secrets because I wasn't able to keep track of where I am and where I've been.

Thanks for sharing!

Developer(+1)

Hey thanks for playing and the feedback. You are right that the navigation is not easy to keep track of, and the spinners and teleporters are not helping in this case. This is one of the game where you want to bring pen and paper out and track yourself, my artifical 64KB limit did not alllow a map, sorry.
