Description
Kept a little devlog during the jam:
https://eetusuikkanen.github.io/blog/1757949741177-imptressions-mystery-1/
Foreword:
This jam was a bit of a rollercoaster for me!
I started out making orchestral stuff and got 2 tracks in a pretty good state,
but then I kind of lost the motivation to continue those and tried to get some inspiration back by trying some different sounds, and after trying chiptune sounds I got some inspiration from those and decided to go chiptune for my submission.
I have the earlier orchestral versions of FOREST and ENCOUNTER in my devlog, for those interested (also other progress snapshots).
In-Context Demo:
I made a short RPG game in RPGMAKER VX ACE to demo the tracks in an actual game setting, but unfortunately VX ACE is a bit old so it doesn't support WEB/HTML export, so if anyone wants to actually try the demo, I added the game zip/executable to the submission (have to say that the random .exe file looks sketchy as fuck π
)
I also recorded a full playthrough of the demo, with letting the tracks loop once to show how the looping works for tracks that are made to loop, so you don't have to download the sketchy looking EXE file π:

Sheet music:
I made sheet music for the tracks using Musescore, which are in the attached pdf file.
Or alternatively they are also uploaded to musescore.com, albeit the cover page is a bit wonky since I used the pixel font from the game for it, that musescore.com doesn't have.

Music:
It might seem theres a lot of tracks, but most are just short ones
I tried to go with the hard challenge at first, but not all tracks are seamless loops, so easy mode it is π.
Some tracks fade out to loop in the video since they were seamless loops at one point, but I seem to have tweaked them at one point so the looping is a bit shit, so kindly disregard the loop fadeouts? π
But the battle tracks im pretty happy with the looping, at least in-game they felt pretty good when I tested them.
FOREST was the first track i made on my initial orchestral venture, and I tried to have both of the motifs played in their given form on that track.
For the other tracks I took a bit more free approach and tried to take different elements from the motifs and use those as building blocks for the melodies, rhythms etc. of the other tracks i was going to make.
I'm no expert in making legible notation, but hopefully the sheet music can help to follow/analyze the melodic and rhytmic stuff on the tracks.
ALL FEEDBACK/CRITIQUE WELCOME!

I listen to this and I get pulled right back to some early Metroid themes - especially Metroid 2 (the one for the original GB). The melodies are great and they feel period correct too!
Nice work, Eetu!
I really like the "Ancient Evil," it has the most interesting vibe to it.
I agree with FoxHyode on the mixing having some harsh overtones, I think it's a bit on the bright side on some of the upper registers, one of the toughest things to fight with chiptune type music I think.
Overall though very good.
Yeah, going to have to really focus on just getting better at production, especially after the surprising amount fantastically produced stuff a lot of people had on this jam ...
Initially planning on doing some more production/sound design heavy stuff for whatever the next jam is, since I've always tended to avoid learning anything production/sound design related like the plague π
Glad you liked it!
I can't believe you have a whole game for this too, that's actually nuts! I really like the bass line in Ancient Evil
RPGMaker is pretty quick to make something like this with since It doesn't require coding, as most of the the usual 2D JRPG things are just plug and play style lego building blocks π.
Glad you liked it!
What do you mean you made a game with RPG Maker... I barely had the time to make one track. All right chiptune it is, i'm no expert but I'll judge the best I can. it works well, very well structure wise, I like the progression and the feeling you get for each different piece, you feel the difference between forrest and dungeon, you get the nice change of pace with encounter and ancient evil and you even put a victory jingle and the theme is here nontheless. Now mixing wise its hard to tell with chiptune as back in the days they were very limited track wise sometimes they and 2-3 tracks max to do everything and no panning. Now the square lead and arps sometimes mixing wise its clashing a bit I'm getting some frequency that I want to tone down a little bit but thats pretty much it.
Yea, I didn't really do a lot mixing wise for these, mostly the sounds are as is, with some light eq and compression on the master (should've probably gone a bit more granular π).
Glad you liked it!
Holy hell, how did you make this??? On top of the music you made a game too? You are something else entirely. Great job!
Thanks for the kind words π
Glad you liked it!
A music lesson on many levels, I think I'm going to pick out a few harmonic progressions! And a game too... Seriously, do you ever sleep? :D Big bravo to you!
π Very glad you liked it!
I love the chiptune route you went, interestingly, all tracks have this jumpy and slyness to them (definitely leaning into the fox-vibe!).
Glad you liked it!
Glad you liked it!
Sadly the whole invincibility thing with Fox is mostly because of the fact that I was a bit afraid that I had the damage values too high for the bosses, so I had to put that so the game would not be unbeatable π
Great.
Amazing.
Immaculate.
Did not play the game, although did listen to the music.
It was better than the other Chiptune one I heard.
This is music that is obviously not rushed. (Personal favourite: Forest)
To be honest, I wish you the best of luck in the musical realm.
Also reminds me a little of Dubmood, which is not bad at all, Dubmood has inspired me.
Many thanks for the kind words π
Hadn't listened to Dubmood before, good stuff!
Really should try and learn trackers again...
Allways felt like black magic since i'm so used to a daw π though the "how to use trackers" videos by Button Masher have helped a bit, but still feels very slow to useπ
Glad you liked it!
For trackers I use Furnace Tracker for my Chiptune stuff (when I make chiptune that is)
Furnace is what I've been using too when I've been trying to learn trackers, just haven't really been able to wrap my head around the whole columns and rows layout yet.
This is just phenomenal. The sounds are peak authenticity and written so believable it really could be a game OST from yesteryear that I would have loved! The songs are short but effective with everything having their own unique twist to the motif. None overstayed their welcome and really draw the listener in and invite them to play. I definitely need to take some extra time to also play your demo. I kind of bragged with your work to some programming friends and how you managed to not only compose an OST in one week but also created a playable demo. I donβt know how youβve done this bit you certainly deserve praise for this. Very well done!
Rpgmaker is kinda like building with legos with how the events etc work, so even I could manage to get this little demo done since I didn't need to code anything. I'm sure your programmer friends can agree thats it's nothing that fancy π.
I really should get around to actually making something "properly" with godot and learning a bit of programming, but procastrination is what it is π
Glad you liked it!
Now played your demo. My point still stands. And that point with lego (we don't need to tell them :D), even Godot isn't much more now and still my friend and I didn't got that mini MetroidVania done. I will hopefully wait for your game to come! ;)
Yeah, making an actual game, even a proof concept demo in a "proper" game engine like Godot takes a a lot of effort and time.
I've followed through a couple of the GDQuest game coding/making tutorials, but never continued trying to actually apply what I learned from that to something thats not just following a guide basically π probably should learn the basics of programming first, so learn to walk before running π.
I've done the yearly Global Game Jam as a duo with a friend who works as a programmer for a few years now, and it's always fun to see how much stuff an actual programmer can get done in just 2 days, when I would probably only have a character controller done probably π
Woah you guys are really using your 5minutes to their fullest hahah
Appretiate the extra lengths you went to make this into a little playable experience, it was really neat to feel the music in action while being a bit more involved with it, (also funny that the fox mc basically has godmode, I couldn't even gameover xD)
Very cool submission!
I was a bit lazy to actually try and make it a properly balanced experience with all the dmg/health values, so i put the scripted full restore/heal/buff effect when fox gets too low HP.
I should've also put a little dialog after defeating the boss that choosing NO on the "USE THE ELDER STONE?" dialog triggers the GAME OVER screen so people press that to trigger the GAME OVER screen/jingle π
Glad you liked it!
The devlog is super interesting to me, one of my favorite things in art in general is looking at the whole process and all the choices the artist made to get to their final piece, so I really appreciate its inclusion :)
This is a super fun list of tracks! These really hit Gameboy vibes for me, which is further solidified by the large collection of smaller songs as if the developers are trying to save on memory and keep songs short and sweet. Every track feels very distinct from each other too despite seemingly playing in the same general keys and motifs, which also makes them all feel cohesive as an ost. Great work all around!
Keeping some form of a journal for jam projects usually helps stimulate the brain a bit, often leading to getting new ideas/inspiration while writing things down. I also tend to have a pretty bad memory, so its fun to later go and read what the heck I even did on a project π
Glad you liked them!
