Game Description
Subtilo is a challenging color-perception puzzle game. Find the single tile with a subtly different hue. It starts easy, but with each new level, the grid grows larger, and the color difference shrinks to an almost imperceptible tint. You can add color correction filters in the video options for Protanopia,Deuteranopia Tritanopia and Achromatopsia to remove colors you cant perceive.

How does your game tie into the theme?
spot subtle differences in colors that are almost indistinguishable and see the unseen

I like the polish you put on this game. The visual style felt coherent and nice in its simplistic minimalism, and the audio felt juicy and crisp. It put me in a nice mood.

The premise of the game was clever, and it was presented well, but I didn't enjoy the gameplay. For me, the color differences were either abundantly clear or not at all, and it felt like I had no strategic control over which was which. I'm not sure how I could've improved, because my eyes and screen setup won't really change.

Overall, though, your presentation was strong. Great job!

This was a neat take on the theme.  I found some of the colors fairly easy to spot the difference, while others I had to really focus on.  I do wish there was a clearer way to skip sending my score to the leader board.  It took me a couple of plays before acknowledging that I should try hitting escape again after it closed fullscreen.  Otherwise, this was a great game.

I loved the audio, visuals and overall vibe of this game. I kept getting beaten by green whenever it showed up but I still had a lot of fun playing this. The audio feedback of getting the correct tiles gave me so much satisfaction. Got no criticism about this honestly, only person I can critique is myself with how bad my colour perception is haha

Submitted(+1)

Enjoyed it a lot, no other feedback! Thought you did great!

Developer

thank you :)

woah the intro bg is hella cool! This game is very fun and addictive. You did a great job with the juice for the board lighting up, the sound effect, and the bonus bar. It was really cool to see the graph of the score distribution at the end (how did you make a graph :O) Overall fantastic game! Excellent work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for the kind words :) it took me way too long to make the background but i am happy how it turned out :D
Its moving to the music audio spectrum from left side low frequencies and right side high frequencies + some other magic for smoother swings :D.
Volume is the height of the block and if you play around with music volume(not master) or mute in the options it is affected :D
But i didnt start the shader from zero, i started with converting this https://www.shadertoy.com/view/4sSBW3  to a godotshader and went on from there. still took me around 16 hours of research, coding and tinkering^^

The Graph is the Graph2D Node (https://godotengine.org/asset-library/asset/1784) with some adjustements by me

Very nice idea, very well done.

Developer

Thank you :)

Liked the sounds, good job on the entry!

Developer

Thanks mate

Very cool game, and it fit the theme so well! I got to level 56 and enjoyed it through out. very well executed original concept, well done!
It did start to lag a little bit in later levels when playing on the browser, but that could have just been my laptop. overall, I thought this game was fantastic.

Developer

Thank you :D

when finishing a level the glow shader pops up but its a bit unoptimized and larger grids make it consume a lot of computer performance in the browser version.

I hope it wasnt too bad.

Submitted(+1)

No not to bad at all, really enjoyed it

Submitted(+1)

Very good polish and "juice", the mechanic is very simple but the sound + effect when picking the color is great so playing feels great :)

Cool accessibility settings, especially since the game really needs it if the player is colorblind.

(PS. I have Deuteranopia and I had to choose Protanopia for the game to be playable. Dunno if it's mislabeled or a quirk of color blindness... or if I was misdiagnosed :p)

Developer

Thank you that makes me happy :) i tried to sync the level transition glow and audio and im glad you noticed :D

I'm glad the color correction did something because i had nobody to test.
In essence its this shader https://godotshaders.com/shader/colorblind-shader-4-4-1/ with one additional option (Achromatopsia) that i tried to implement myself after reading up on the different types of vision.
So better trust your doctor xD

Submitted(+1)

Oh, interesting, didn't think it'd be a shader! I'll try adding it to my game too, thanks for the link :)

Developer

no problem ^^

Submitted(+1)

Extremely simple to understand and really fun to play, nice job with it!

Developer(+1)

Thanks :D

This game is honestly incredible. I had a blast playing it and it's very polished. Also loved the fact that you added color correction for color blind people, it really is important for a color based game !

Even though I knew we had the same win sound, it still surprised me a lot the first time haha.

Also I was wondering, does the game detect your computer's language or are you french ? Because seeing some text in french was really surprising aswell

Developer (1 edit) (+2)

Thank you so much :)

I hope the color blind modes are doing something, but im not sure if they make a difference tbh. But i thought it added a nice touch and wasnt really hard to implement :D

The localisation and the menues are from https://github.com/Maaack/Godot-Game-Template
its a really cool starterkit for gamejams and missing translation in the game were my neglect ^^

Thanks for the link ! Be careful the if you click on the link it is broken (redirects to https://github.com/Maaack/Godot-Game-Templatemaaacks, no idea why. if you copy paste it it's fine though). I'll make sure to use it for my next gamejams :D

Developer(+1)

oh sorry, fixed the link for future visitors :D

Submitted(+1)

I can confirm it makes a difference, I definetly have Protanopia or Deuteranopia.

Developer

glad to hear that :D

Submitted(+2)

I love the idea!

I can feel the effort in polishing the game, it really is kinda addictive.

Good job! Turns out green hues are my weakness...

Developer(+1)

Glad you love it :)

green is my endboss too and also some red shades sometimes (but I'm not colorblind as far as i know ^^)

When i asked friends for feedback for difficulty pretty much everyone said green is too hard and that made me curious, because the hue shifts are the same as for the other colors difficulty progressions.
So i tried to research why and the only thing that I found is a hypothesis that some brains evolved to ignore green details because green stuff in nature is the uninteresting background noise our brains filter out. Soa maybe its a real thing ^^ im not sure.

Thank you for trying out my game :D

Submitted(+1)

Green ones are also the ones I lost all my points on... They were so hard !

Submitted(+1)

That felt good to play cause I got to top 10 ahahah
I liked the effects on the grid and tiles and thought it had everything GWJ wanted

Thanks for playing :D

Thats a great score. The grading and graph is centered around the mean of all scores and range is determined by standard deviation, so at some point with enough data the graphs will plot a nice bell curve.
in simpler terms B grade means you are better than 50%-83.9%  of the people currently in the leaderboard, which is above average currently :D

A is >83.9%
S > 97.9%
S+ is only rank 1

oh yay!

Elegant idea executed really confidently! A shame about the music stuttering in the browser version but the SFX for stage completion is really satisfying and the quick pace of gameplay really leans into the one more try feeling that's super important for games like this.

Developer

thank you, that makes me happy :)
i was aiming to make the game fun and something you'd want to progress through.

Very fun game got 18th place on the leader board would play again

Developer

Thanks :D

Really fun, relaxing and maybe hard game! It's having big potential.

Developer

Thank you for the kind words :)

Submitted(+1)

I played the game on phone and work great.

Submitted(+1)

Very pleasant game. Good idea with the leaderboard and charts!

Developer

Thank you. With enough leaderboard entries the graphs will be bell curves one day :D

Submitted(+1)

Nice game! It was honestly kind of relaxing and fun and easy to play :D

Developer

Thank you, glad you liked it :D

Submitted(+1)

What a fun game idea! This game had excellent visual polish, and was very easy to understand and pick up. The leaderboard was a great touch. I had a lot of fun playing this!

Developer

thanks a lot! really happy to hear it felt polished and easy to jump into :D

Submitted(+1)

This was fun!  I was shocked I could tell the difference, they looked so similar!  It was very satisfying to just click the square that felt wrong and have it turn out right.  FWIW the glow effect when you got something right made my laptop struggle and the music stutter.  Nice work!

Developer

thanks! glad it clicked with you (literally haha)

yeah the music stutter is a rough tradeoff in the browser version.
i’m using a spectrum analyzer audio effect to drive the background shader in the main menu, but godot browserexports only supports audio effects in stream mode, which has some nasty latency. Enabling Threads just crashed the browser version :/ so i was out of options and i really wanted to show my main menu shader which took me 2 days to make.

audio stutter was kinda sporadic on my machine and i was hoping that different hardware would have similar results. Then the glow shader computations grow with grid size and hog the single thread and the audio stutter starts.
I hope it wasnt too bad for you.
The Download version doesnt have that problem (but i know no one likes to download)
