How does your game fit the theme?
The antagonist of the game discovers how to manipulate save files, and traps you in an endless loop of tutorial. The goal is to escape the tutorial and "get started" with playing the actual game.

Solid use of the theme for a roguelite
The combat is a lil basic, but the animations and sfx make it satisfying
The music is just the right blend of goofy and anxiety inducing lol
My only nitpick is that the gray walls kinda blend into the gray floor, so a lil more contrast would be nice
i was planning to add a lighting system so that issue would surely be solved that way i think, thanks for the compliment about the music, i feel alot better at making music now :D
Wwe memed this game so much... and it still pierced the heavens with my expectation... it is a good lil dungeon arena game, the SFXses are very juicy, the hiteffect and particles on the enemies are satisfying, I do wish the player had the same, the audio cue is clear but a visual one would be nice too... I got got in stage 3, the knife scarecrow cornered me. combat in the game very simple but is really responsive and the fact that you have to stop moving to attack makes so there is still strategy to it, there is a bit of a cheese you can do on most enemy types using the 1 tile wide collisions, can attack past the tile wide gap, except for the scarecrows, they have more range and move so erratically that the wall trick cannot be done (hence my death to one of them). after skill issuing and dying pathetically in lvl 3, I used the selection code and found out that the player level starts from 1, even if you do the level code, so in order to see the remainder of the enemy types, I used godmode like a newbie ;)
very impressed with the variety of enemies and attacks, the boss patterns are fun to learn (will need to go back and try to beat it legit). Amazing game bud.
wow, massive comment, i love in depth reviews like these. i would probably have added screenshake for more impact on enemy attacks and the player taking damage but for some odd reason it only shook the background, so i never added it. the swordummy is probably my favourite enemy just due to how tricky the ai is. also for the levelling, i probably should have added an in-depth debug menu to change your level, bur ran out of time. thanks a bunch! (also remember it wasn't just me that made the game :D)
Would like a better indicator for when you level up, and maybe a dodge button or smth
Still a really good game, I liked it a lot :>
yeah i really need to implement a few qol changes, i only had 4 days to finish the game so i was focusing on adding an ending lol
W FIRST GAMEJAM GAME
thanks!
Fun: I like the leveling system, the attacks are satisfying, and the enemies are great. wish the movements were better, or adding a way to dodge
Presentation: love the art style, the sound design as well, the enemies look great, did you draw them?
creativity: nice idea, the leveling is good, and manipulating the save file fits the theme well, very good
thanks for all the feedback! about the art, it was mostly made by moon apart from a few made by me. i also composed all the music you hear in the game, the sounds are just stock sound effects from a website, if i had the time i would do foley.
That's great, I'm sure with time this could be a full game. id love for you to try my game, im sure you're gonna love it😁 I dont know how to do attacks and stuff but im great at platforming
sure thing!
Congratulations on your first game jam, and a great entry! I had a lot of fun with this one and I especially enjoyed the different enemy types and how varied they all were! My one suggestion would be that it's quite difficult to attack enemies above or below you (but that might be intended so if that's the case then I take it back haha).
yeah that was intended lol, but in the full game i might add some weapons with full 360° range if that sounds good?
Yeah that sounds like a great idea!
Interesting idea! Special call out to the damage numbers enemies receive, it looks really good.
If you were to continue this, I'd focus on making the character movement feel better. Maybe update the walk animation, make it a little faster, add some kind of dashing, improve the attack animation, etc.
Good work on the enemies too! The scarecrow is my favorite.
funny how absolutely everyone thinks its a scarecrow when it was meant to be a training dummy lol. i'll absolutely do all those qol changes!
Ha, sorry about that. The walk cycle was a little rushed and I really wish I had a chance to improve it. Thank you for the kind words on the enemy design! Your words are appreciated!
Wow very impressive for your first game jam!
I really like the art and monster/character design. Also you manage to give each monster a different ability which feels great when I encounter new enemies
Personally I find the character moves really slow, not in combat but outside. It feels like there is more walking then fighting. Placing enemies closer together can also solve this problem.
I also felt that the attack has no impact behind it. There are many ways to improve this:
- Screenshake on hit
- Anticipation frame
- Bigger arc when swing the weapon
to name a few.
But still fun little game :)
i was considering making the attack better, but i only had a couple more hours before i had to leave for a holiday so i decided to just upload the game as it was lol. thanks for the feedback though!
I really appreciate your kind words about the character design! Thank you!
I like the amount of enemy variety! ✨
Each enemy were quite unique and adds a new type of hurdle to the player, the pixel art was very nice, I like the animations, even for the protag with his tiny steps haha, there's a certain charm to it, I'd suggest making the attacks more responsive and more attack variety, knights usually have more than just a melee weapon, would love to see more weapons!
Overall quite a nice challenging game, good job!
funnily enough one of the plans for the actual game is to have a dead cells styled weapon system where the player can find loads of different weapons they can pick up and use. thanks!
Thanks for the kind words on the pixel art! Glad to know that you had enjoyed it.
Very nice pixel art! The enemies were all very creative, I especially loved the scarecrow type guys. I did a pacifist run in which I killed the least amount of enemies possible and I made it through the first two levels. It was really fun. Good job!
Could you check out my game if you have some time, I would really like some feedback.
i love doing the pacifist ones, my record is stage 4!
Thanks! Designing the enemies and doing the pixel art was a lot of fun, so I'm glad to hear that you had enjoyed it.
Hey there! Nice game. I love the idea! (I accidentally pressed the god mode button lol) But I love the animations and the enemies! Great work!
If you have some time available, check out my game! I believe you will have a good experience!
god mode is fine lol i added it in specifically so people. could see all the content in the game without needing to be cracked. i will check it out later today for sure!
the man, the myth, the legend. The plug got me
This was actually really fun! I liked the enemy variety a lot. I still couldn‘t get past the third cycle after 4 attempts because of the knife dummy, lol. My main feedback is that letting you restart to the last cycle would have been neat. Still, i really enjoyed the game, and it was ambitious of you to animate dithered sprites, but they turned out awesome!
Thank you! I spent a really long time doing the sprites, so I'm glad to hear that the efforts were fruitful.
really awesome coming from you, a tip for the knife dummy, bait them into attacking and then they basically become stunned!
I'll remember it! I'll def try again
This is so good! Really challenging, but simple to understand and get going imediately. Great game! Will play lots more (I wont rest until ive defeated the last wave!)
we may have a winner here
Have you gotten to the final round yet? Excited to hear your progress!
I have indeed! The boss is really difficult, I'm on my 5th try right now!
Ah, brilliant! Good luck!
Worked like a charm! After fourteen tries, I've finally managed to beat it!
oh lord you did it you masochist
I sure did! Rogue-like is my thing! Lmao, it was really fun and really hard. (now the question is, can I first run it? or do it no-hit? we'll see lol)
not even i have done that so you're on your own lol
loved the idea. The game is really hard so i wasn't able to beat it
dont think anyone has beat it
The idea is definitely interesting, but at a late stage, all that remains do is to pray gods of AI that enemies stuck in the wall
the endless horde of enemies in stage 4 gives me ptsd
I liked the idea, and definitelly unique concept, but I just wish the player was smaller and from a top-down perspective so you can more easily see where your attacks will land… The music was really nice and it fith the gameplay really well, The combat was great, as you had many diverse enemies, althought at times I was swarmed by the enemies attacking from below… Now I felt like the characther was randomly slowing down, not sure if it was exhaustion from combat or if it’s related to camera movement, but overall a great start to making games :)
thanks for all the feedback! and no the player always remains the same speed, i think it was probably the camera speed that was causing that effect.
I like the idea and overall it feels pretty decent to play, but I think it's very punishing to play. I was being very thorough but at the last room I got farmed very quickly by the sword dummies. It felt like I had to find a way to cheese every enemy so I wouldn't lose all my health, like when the shooting enemies were grouped up I had better odds killing them through a wall instead of trying to find opportunities in between attacks (the lack of invulnerability frames definitely ramped up the difficulty). Visually and audibly, still very well done!
i tend to make my games really difficult for no reason so thats a me issue lol
Don't take this the wrong way, but I think there's probably better ways of making something difficult rather than just giving stuff high attack speeds and damage
oh yeah definitely
I didn't beat it (I have chronic skill issue) but it was really fun!
i don't think anyone has beat it lol
Great game, i had so much fun playing and really liked it
awesome
The game is fun and really enjoyable, i think it could be better by making the walls tiles different color or darker because its the same color as the background, also you could have made a death animation rather than an instant black screen with some text, but overall good game.
thanks, i made the game over screen literally 10 minutes before i uploaded the game so it probably doesn't look very good
