I do love me some game of life! As usual, though, I find it very hard to reason about game of life in a way that doesn't rely on trial-and-error, though that might just be my limited understanding of the game. I also feel like figuring out what colors do on such a limited grid with such a big possibility space for the rules might be a bit much to ask of a new player; maybe at least reducing the possibility space a bit by laying some ground rules for the game may help? Still, a pretty cool idea, thanks for sharing!

This reminded me of that game about the cells... Game of life! With the Cellular automata. Really cool! And a brilliant interpretation of the theme! Well done!

Also I'd appreciate feedback on my submission if you get a chance!

A very smart way to intepret the theme! Unless I have something wrong with my settings, I didnt hear any  music or SFX. I think I would enjoy some satisfying clicks, evem without music I would enjoy! Other than that, well done!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback.

There is no audio currently. But I will definitely add it.

Certainly a neat little puzzle game. Im not super familiar with the game of life, so it ended up being a lot of guess and check, but I did manage in the end. With a little polish, and maybe some other block types I'd love to see where this goes. Great stuff!!

What a fun take on the game of life. Well done.

It's an interesting idea to use the game of life for a game, but there is some feedback I'd like to give. It seems that the main goal in your eyes is to make the player figure out  "the rules". But if someone doesn't know what the game of life is, they can probably never figure that out on their own, I think. Even if you do vaguely know what the game of life is, it can be hard to figure out the exact rules. If I had made this game, I would have first explained the rules of the game of life to the player, and then ask them to find a solution that survives the 100 iterations. That's challenging enough, I think.

Developer

I have gotten a lot of feedback about the difficulty and I realize that I kinda messed that up.

I am planning on continuing with this game. And mode with all rules revealed will definitely be the default.

And if someone wants to be given the challenge of discovering it, it will also be an option.

Submitted

Maybe you can add some colors I  the later level that need to be discovered! The player will be more accustomed to the way the game works by then :)

Can you also rate my game?

Very clever concept! Once the mechanics click, it’s super satisfying :)

the overall idea of doing something with Life has potential, but here I never felt like I was given enough information to make any informed decisions. The new colors were introduced in levels where I didn't have enough cells or enough space to experiment and reverse-engineer the rules, so almost every level came down to bruteforce in the end. Or maybe I'm just dumb, that's a very real possibility too! Cool idea though, I think it would be nice with more thoughtful level design.

Maybe don't let the player start the simulation until all cell are placed? But I see that it wouldn't allow the player to experiment with less cells to get a sense of the new cell types.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback.

I will definitely add a pop-up or something when you haven't placed all the cells.

This is awesome. Great puzzle game.  I was a bit stuck at start before I found out I HAVE to spend all the cells. Some visual feedback would help. And second thing I would love - a possibility to go forward/backward just one step, instead of playing/pausing. That would make observarion easier.

Nice take on the theme first I din’t understand how it relates to it, but then when I read that the solution are loops I was mind blown!

I was really bad at it and get only to the second level with red tiles. But without the hints on the page I wouldn’t even got that far. Some UI feedback like what tile is selected would also help, but in the ned I did away without it.

Nice to see another cellular automata puzzle game ;)

Creative use of different color types. I agree with another comment that brute forcing was a big part of the strategies, but part of that comes from having to figure out what new colored tiles do. Overall it has a bit of steep learning curve, but that's not super surprising given the nature of these types of games.

This is an awesome puzzle game, nicely done! It's really difficult, even for someone familiar with Conway's, but still awesome job!

Hello! I enjoyed your game. I love anything Conway's game of life so I was excited about the concept as soon as I saw the picture. The puzzle solutions were clever, but I felt that I had to brute force to find the solution. perhaps less options  (like locked cells) or some hints would go a long way. I hope you keep working on it. Congrats on submitting!

I got past level 1 once, but then the "Next Level" button stopped being clickable even when making it past loop 100 with white cells still on the board.  I restarted the game, and then couldn't even get past level 1 with two different solutions that both had cells remaining well past loop 100.  I do like the idea of needing to figure out how each color of cell behaves.  I wish I could have seen the rest of the game!

Developer

Wait so, were you able to get to the second level or not? Because if not you probably didn't spend all the 60 white cells.

Submitted(+1)

Ahh, my bad!  I didn't realize that was a requirement.  I figured I was being efficient by beating the level with less than the allotted number of cells...  I should try reading next time lol

Developer

Definitely not your fault. A lot of people had that problem. So that is definitely on me.

Submitted(+1)

took me a bit to figure out that i needed to place all of the white cells in the first level, but otherwise great game!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback.

That is like the number one problem people have with it. So that needs to be improved definitely.

Submitted(+2)

I like the idea a lot but I do think there could be better execution.

I think at the start the game needs to guide you along a bit more. The levels with only white cells I beat without thinking, but as soon as I reached the level with the red squares I was stumped. I did figure out that the red cells would kill all nearby white cells, but I couldn't figure out WHY I would want to do that, when my goal is to keep the white alive. if there was a level that showed me why I need to use a red and how I can use it, then I would enjoy it more.

Again, I really like the idea, but it did need better execution.

Thanks for the review.

The teaching part of the game definitely needs to be improved a lot. I already have some ideas. Thanks for the feedback it helps a lot.

I'm no good at the Game of Life, but I did tinker around and get pretty far. I could definitely see this being a favorite for those who are more familiar with it

My QoL suggestion is to select a color if it gets right clicked in the grid

Developer

Thanks for the QoL suggestion. Adding it to my QoL features list.

Really neat idea! I was not expecting to see a game of life puzzle game in this jam (or ever). I feel like the rules of new colours could have been explained as the puzzles are still engaging when you know how everything works. Overall great submission!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for the feedback.

After feedback from you and others, I think that the best solution would be to have "difficulty modes". Which would not change the levels but the information you are given. So that the few people that want to figure it out on their own can.

I'm too dumb for this
