This is the type of game you could whip out on a dime on your phone and play to kill some time and have fun. Actually, the graphics remind me a lot of pixel-art mobile games, especially how they go in tandem with the gameplay! The start of a run is pretty slow but this mostly ends up working to the games benefit as once you get a few upgrades it really gets going. The main gameplay loop (at least, I how interpreted it) of strategizing how to min-max the most out of every session is addictive and the amount of time you get is just right. I thought the idea of having portals to end the run would've been a bad thing but it serves as a nice bow to tie up the runs once they start to run their course.
Also, this game would go HARD with some more juice & spicier sound design, like having special effects for mining ores. Wish I had more to say about the upgrades but they're all pretty good and the satisfaction of building up a powerful character is just a tried & true driving force to keep going! One nitpick is that I would've personally preferred if the bombs activated instantly, and you just had to level them up better.
Another thing is that I do wonder if the game would've benefited from having some kind of fail-state, but that would severely alter its design & direction. Like maybe you need to pay some sort of toll each round forcing you to focus on getting cash, or there's a limit on how many days you can take to beat the game, which you can extend by paying a lot. But that's purely my opinion and not a big critique by any means.
Overall this is a pretty relaxing & stress-free arcade game.
Really addictive and enjoyable gameplay! I could play it all day if i had it nearby at all time lol! Great Job
Nice work! I figured my way out, thanks to the indicator on the bottom left, which I guessed was a "out is this way" bit. I think maybe a good way to expand would be to start the player in a much smaller room with a clear exit so they know what they're looking for when they get dropped into the main game, but overall I think you did a good job of getting me there. Thanks for sharing! :D
Such a satisfying gameplay loop! I’m a huge fan of incremental games, and the upgrade system here is brilliantly designed—it kept me hooked and chasing that next upgrade. Awesome work!
Very fun and addictive core loop, the mechanics feel great and instantly understandable and I love the aesthetic and limited resolution. The rock break particles would feel a lot nicer if they were tied to the world space rather than the camera. Also, some sort of confirmation with buying upgrades would be nice, it was a bummer when I accidentally walked over stuff and bought it without realizing.
To echo what Squishy Turtle said, my biggest issue was that the progression wasn't really tied to the end goal, apart from the portal chance upgrades. Getting better and faster at mining didn't necessarily equate to getting closer to finishing the game, it just kinda ends based on pure luck. I think this loop would work a lot better if the portal was located in a fixed position, surrounded by really hard to mine rocks or some sort of obstacle - that way each run I have to make the decision of whether I'm gonna go for the portal or just try and build up my money a bit more. I also agree that the bombs became a bit useless as I got faster, because even with upgraded bombs I could usually mine through stuff a lot quicker than waiting for a bomb to go off.
But overall, this was very well executed, good job!
Thank you for the in depth feedback, I 100% agree. I’ve been brainstorming some ideas to essentially scrap or rework the current goal into something else after the jam is complete! The feedback like this helps me narrow down what could work/wouldn’t <3
Catchy enough to get me to play it through :) I found to bomb to be kinda useless to me as it seemed to destroy the first type of ore without giving it to me and for the others leveling the pickaxe was faster. Kinda sad about finding the portal, as I was so busy maxing out my equipment and mining EVERYTHING :D Nice game :)
Hmm I wonder if you had some kind of bug because it does definitely give the money when using it. You happen to able to test in the tutorial for me just to sanity test myself?
Thank you for the kind comments though! Glad you had fun
Tried it again and it actually works in both the tutorial and main game. I think I was too stupid to properly compare before and after of my point status. So that's on me ;) I think in the first playthrough I wasted my bomb on the upper minerals and there I only got one of the blocks (as the others have too much health) and that's part of why I didn't notice.
Nice, next time more bomb usage from my side. :D
Didn't expect myself to play this for so long, was bummed to find a portal...
Anyway very addictive gameplay loop, it also helps that everything is top down so you can see where the ores are! Started out a bit slow, because some sections were completely empty, but after a few rounds and getting some speed buffs the pace really started to pick up! great game, keep up the good work :)
I yearned for the mines. I really liked the loop and it got pretty addicting quickly :) great stuff
I like how it easy to get in and how it actually complex!
Very nice. It's strangely hard to put down once you start playing :D
Very fun and rewarding, nice game loop and handling of the theme, and I really love mining games
Fun!
nice Idea. good job
Really like the fact that we had a similar idea haha, I had a lot of fun playing this improving and mining even more each time was really fun !! And it's your first jam, that's impressive! Good job!
I knew there had to be at least one other game like mine! I felt like I was going crazy lol
I checked yours out too and I enjoyed it and left a rating <3
Thank you!!
+1 on mining game
great game! well polished! got addicted to mining
This game is crazy fun. no way this is your first game jam. i am genuinely addicted. I have created a beast of a miner when i finished playing one shotting gold and mining at light speed.
But my big issue, Now I was already one shotting gold ore so now ofcourse the next goal is to one shot diamond ore. but i saw a portal and went in and game finished... I was kinda sad. The goal should be creating the best miner with the best upgrades, not finding some portal to end all your progress. Maybe instead of findinga portal to beat the game, it could be this impossible hard to mine ruby ore which you can grind and get your upgrades to mine that ore. So the replayability may come from how fast and efficiently you can find and mine that ruby ore.
But overall the most fun game in the jam!
This was a damn good game loop. Simple but immensely satisfying. You start as a chump, barely mining a few blocks before time was out. It was during this stage I discovered a diamond before I had time to mine it and it sparked a fire in me. By the end I was carving my way through the map, cutting diamonds like butter, optimising my bomb usage and ultimately wrecking shop in this pixel underworld. That's my one gripe. I agree with Squishy Turtle Games, in that the portals feel like an end to the fun loop you've built. But an immensely fun game and you should be proud, my first jam game sucked big time and barely worked, xD
Keep up the good work, you've got a solid core here!
I like it so much! It felt like a cookie clicker but mining. I was really locked in and addicted, so great job!! I would say as it progresses, it would be nice to have stronger ores (ex. ruby?) that take longer time & higher price to mine!
I finished the game at day 26... hope this is not the worst record haha.
This is a solid first entry! you should be very proud. I think my main advice would be to do a deep dive into game design and after the jam really analyze your game and ask yourself what the design encourages. Some questions I think would be helpful to ask yourself are these:
These core questions will help you solidify for yourself the core of your game. I bring up these questions because as a player I felt there was a bit of a disconnect between the mechanics and the goals of the game. At the start I wasn't sure what the goal of the game was (later I discovered the portals on accident). I think this goal of finding a portal and leaving is really my main issue with my experience.
Essentially what you've created here is a scenario with fun mechanics where you power up your character again and again all for the purpose of leaving the powerups and fun mechanics behind. If your game is fun, leaving the game is a punishment, not a reward! Additionally the portals discourage engaging with your fun mechanics because it encourages the player to spend more time walking around searching for portals and more money on the portal upgrade.
I hope this makes sense and doesn't sound too harsh or nitpicky, I'm saying all this because I see a lot of potential with your mechanics and I think you've done a great job! I genuinely had a great time when I started ignoring the portals and gave myself the goal of powering up as much as possible. I think a simple change of the goal to better tether the mechanics and the goal would take this game up a couple notches. This is a great entry! Thanks for making it and best of luck on your future jams and games!
No this isn't nit picky at all!
I love the feedback you provided and can definitely be super helpful to try and improve it in the future for a final post jam update!
