Really nicely looking game! The mechanics are well-thought-out to give room for cool gameplay and complexity, like the higher jumping when no shield is held. Also, I like the simplicity of the shield being both offensive and defensive. Had fun playing, great work!

Probably the most polished game I’ve played on this jam, congratulations! The art direction is super consistent and eye catching, sound design is complimentary to visuals and gameplay, tutorial is done on a professional level.

The only bitter thing for me was instant death, I would prefer to have at least 3 lives, without that, it was very hard for me to play. Nut that’s a personal thing of a someone who does not plays platformers a lot.

So, this is just Captain America in the Middle Ages right. This is a really well-done platformer! I like it a lot! The pixel art looks nice, the 8-bit music sounds great, and the whole package feels coherent and well-designed! The gameplay is also a blast. I originally thought it was too difficult, until I found out that I could recall the shield in the first place. I don't think it's possible for me to clear the latter half of the game without the recall ability though. The level design is also well thought-out and well-made, though a bit harsh in some areas, but all of them are beatable. I think the explosion animation and its hurt boxes are the worst part in the game, that a lot of time it felt unnecessarily long, and causes a bunch of deaths due to misjudging the duration of the hurtboxes. I would also say some animations, especially the shield animation lack an impact, which I think with some visual flare, camera shaking, etc would make the whole action bit feel much more lively. But these are just nitpicks anyway.

The game is super well done, and I think you all did a fantastic job making it! Well done!

P.S. Finally beating the game in 4 minutes after a lot of tries, but there you go

Developer

Thank you very much for your feedback! Congrats and thanks for beating it!

Serious awesome game! Visuals and audio were soooo amazing, can't believe you pulled this together so quickly! It felt like Captain America in  monty python times! The timings with when enemies spawn and turret shots was really well balanced. There is just a delay on the menu screen, it takes like 3 seconds to register that I pressed space bar.

Cool innovative gameplay! I loved how the player interacts with the shield (and without it) and how the controls/timing open a wide range of possibilities! Well designed platforming as well!! Great job for the team! 😊😊✨

Incredibly good game! The art and animation is fantastic. And controls feel great.

Embarrassingly, it took me 20 minutes to realize you can  recall the shield. You can actually get surprisingly far (30-40%) without doing it. But once I realized, I managed to beat it in 1:33.22 after about 40 minutes total.

A couple of frustrating things I would love to see fixed:

  1. When you duck to parry a flying monster, sometimes you die after the initial hit, even if you keep holding down duck.
  2. When you duck to parry a flying monster, sometimes you die after the initial hit, if you let go of duck but don't move.
  3. There is a section where you have to jump to the second button. Here you are jumping out of the level (at the top), and hold right to land on the next platform. But sometimes you simply cannot land there, even if you are holding right all the time. Very frustrating.

But overall, I loved this game.. it is so addictive. I want more!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much for the feedback!
Yeah the explosions would be something we would definitely improve if we had more time to play test it.

As for the second button, it isn't supposed for you to go there, it's for you to throw the shield xD  If you are able to go out of the map, then that is a bug...

Submitted(+1)

ahaha… I threw the shield to the right side of the enemy, then went up to that button to retrieve it, killing the enemy on the other side.

With this hint I got it down to 1:17.23

Great game! Fantastic visuals! Fun mechanics! The shield throw makes me feel like Anakin :D Good work! The hit boxes could be shrunk or health features would go a long way!  *this game was live reviewed here:  twitch.tv/gratefulllyivory (will post vod after stream)

Really fun concept for a brainteasing platformer. Some great risk/reward mechanics that work well with the level design and the enemy types. Incredibly charming art style, too. It has so much potential. Would love to see this fleshed out further!

Developer

Thank you very much! It was a fun journey. It's amazing to see people are liking the game!

Great mechanics and polish, SFX and music fit well with the graphic style and feel of the game. Quite difficult. Good job!

Wow, just wow. This game is "my" type. Of all the game this is the only game, which I played because I enjoyed. Again, amazing !!!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much! That really means a lot to us!

I like how this capture the feeling of some old games, in a way that most developers seem to avoid because it could become frustrating for most players, but it could also be really fun for the more persistent ones. Good job!

Developer

Yeah that is tottally what we tried to achieve! Thank you!

I managed to beat it! The art is great, and I really like the color scheme. The control scheme with the arrow keys while using S to throw was a little unusual for me and sometimes I would block an enemy attack and think I could keep moving, only to find that the enemy explosion hitbox was still going. I think you showed some interesting ideas, though, and I really like the mechanic of throwing the shield and returning. Needing to not have the shield to jump higher was also really smart and led to some very risky situations.

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much! Only a few have actually beat the game! The controls are definitely something we would improve if we had invested more time on playstesting...

Really nice visuals, feels very polished

hitboxes are a bit too big on the enemies, they kept hittting me from what felt like acrosss the screen. (it wasn’t actually) would be nice if you could defeat enemies by throwing your shield at them to reward the fast style of gameplay more.

Developer(+1)

Yeah you can defeat the enemies by throwing the shield, that’s the point of the game xD

Submitted

oh, well it wasn’t cleaar in the tutorial so i never tried it

Submitted(+1)

Nice game with great visuals! Only thing is I would've liked to play with A/D instead of the arrow keys, but that's just personal preference I guess :)

Submitted(+1)

Cool game! I really like his visuals and music, I think they work together very well! The game mechanics are also very creative!

But why was I killed by the smoke after the explosion? This makes my death meaningless!

Another thing that often causes my death is that flying robot. He came out too quickly, and I didn't have time to summon my shield back. I tried to move, but in the end, I could only watch myself die

Developer(+1)

Haha yes you have to be careful. The idea is that you should throw the shield and recall it, instead of walking without it. The game becomes pretty easy after you learn the right timings.

Submitted(+3)

Pretty well made with a fun and unique central mechanic, block to stay safe or throw to kill enemies but be vulnerable until the shield is recalled. Definitely fits the theme. The visual style is nice, and the music works well. The tutorial being baked into the game and taught piecemeal as needed is always a plus. There’s a decent amount of enemy variety to keep you on your toes, too.

You still die if you unblock a bit after explosions, which was annoying. The start was also pretty hard, but I am generally bad at platformers, so maybe it’s a skill issue.

Overall an impressive entry, especially with everything made from scratch.

Developer

Thank you very much! Yeah the explosion thing was something we decided to keep this way because it didn't look right to just go into the explosion, but maybe we should have change the animation instead of the making it kill you...

Submitted (1 edit) (+2)

This one was kind of a mixed bag. I usually enjoy platformers, even rage games, but idk, something about this one felt a little off. Maybe it was the animations making blocking and throwing feel sluggish, or the fact that you can’t change direction while blocking, or maybe that I didn’t realize that you could recall the shield until 15 minutes into my playthrough (skill issue). The lingering explosion hurt boxes messed me up a bit but I got used to it over time. I mean the art and soundtrack are really nice, like maybe in the top 20% of what I’ve played so far of this jam, but I kind of stopped having fun after the twenty minute mark. Still beat it though. Always give a game a fair chance till the end.

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much for finishing the game!

There are definitely some aspects that could be improved if we spent more time playtesting before releasing it. There's nothing we can do now 😭

Good graphics, loving the color palette, good music, good level design. Amazing work.
