How does the game fit the theme?
You can gamble some of your XP at the slot machine to more XP. This creates a risk of losing your XP for the chance at levelling up faster.

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
I did not make any of the music or sound effects. They were all royalty free music and sound effects found on Pixabay.

How many people worked on the game?

The art is very good and it's a huge amount of work done for a short jam like this.  Really appreciate they have colorful designs!! And I really like how there is information on the dinos. I had fun just trying to remember which dino is which when only their names came up but their image was still hidden by the prompt.

The gambling didn't really feel like gambling, it basically doesn't let you lose, makes the leveling up system a bit too trivial. Dumping everything into damage state from just one triple win just let me one shot a trex, it kind of breaks the gameplay to win at all. But it was still a fun experience!

yeah it was very hard to balance between impossible and at least getting a couple wins on the slot machine. My biggest downfall is my balancing haha. Thank you for playing my game!

Awesome game! As others have noticed the casino seems to be out of place, and in general I feel like this game could have been used for most of the initial themes proposed for the Jam...

This was a fun little game! The instructions were clear and I was able to jump right in and play. I enjoyed the art style, it was very cute. It seemed a little bit to easy at times, a little more challenge would be nice, but for a single person team this was really impressive for a game jam!

It's a very creative concept, pretty good execution! I don't feel like it ties in with the theme very well, as the gambling mechanics seem like an afterthought. One way to make it "riskier for the biscuitier" would be if you couldn't see what your opponents were doing, but it kept me engaged for a while. Definitely promise here, just doesn't fit that well into this jam.

Doing fisticuffs with dinosaurs is not what I was expecting when I rolled out of bed.
Challenging but not unfair. And I enjoy the character / dino arts. Just a bit light on the risk and/or biscuit side of things.^^

Job well done!

Interesting concept! I like the dinosaurs a lot, cute graphics and even fun facts too (thats a level of dedication that most people don't do). Dinos are really hard to draw and definitely kudos for drawing them soo nicely. Music selection is nice and matches the game a lot, which is super good.

For the gameplay, I felt it's a bit too simple currently, basically, there isn't much to do except spam attack and just upgrade attack. It's a quick win for sure, just it doesn't feel like battling a dino with your bare hands. Also, I think the levels are coming so quickly that the casino sort of loses its purpose in the game. I think the intention is to use that as the clutch for gaining enough levels to beat the game, but given the current balancing, it's just not worth it at the moment. A minor thing is that it would be best if the player could also use the mouse to click on the map to go there. Feels kinda weird that you can only move by the keyboard. It's just some QoL that players would really thank you for that.

Anyway, still its hell of a job making this game, so good job and keep up the good work!

The slot machine feels a bit out of place considering the setting of the rest of the game. But I get it's there for theme reasons.

Still did manage to lose almost all my xp to it in the end xd.

Gameplay itself is quite simple but managing the cards you get & countering gives it some strategic depth.

Some stuff I'd change :

- I'd switch the audio the world map to something a bit more "safari-esq" now it feels a bit "elevator / corporate meeting" if you know what I mean.

- Minor QoL would be if you allowed us to switch out cards by draging ontop of them, now If I change my mind I need to remove the old & put the new one in.

- Put some debounce on the end of a fight, If I press enter a lot of the time I immediately go back into a battle because enter was still held.

I'd still say it's qutie good for a solo project in a week long jam, keep going!

Developer

Yeah my original idea for the theme was the risk was the fight, and if you lose the fight then you don’t get the dinosaur. But that didn’t feel like it fit theme enough and I already had quite a lot of it done and didn’t have to come up with a new idea.

And yes the things that you mentioned I had thought about but couldn’t find good music or couldn’t get it working. Thank you for playing though and thanks for the feedback!

Nice little educational game. The dinosaur theme is super cool and the experience is very much enjoyable. The casino thing feels forced though and maybe it's not appropriate for an educational game. Otherwise congrats, the game is super polished and fun. I love your dinos.

Very cool game! Especially for a game jam. Really nice art and fun gameplay. Keep up the good work! If you don't mind, would you consider checking out my game? I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

Very violent for an archeology game, I love it!

The attack upgrade was a little too powerful though, if you invest all in attack, you can start oneshotting everything very quickly, but still had fun going around the world and killing  collecting them all! I think maybe exponential cost for the upgrades would encourage players more to spread out their purchases, which I'm guessing is the intended way to play

Cool game! I love the care and attention you put into the little things. Having your car turn into a boat, and being able to read about the dinosaurs you collect in the glossary. These were really nice touches. The gameplay loop was solid, although I did find it a little easy. Would have loved to see a ramp-up in the difficulty that made me more compelled to gamble my XP. If I were required to spend a few minutes grinding previous dig sites, I would feel a lot more invested in getting a big payout from the XP slot machine.  The art was really nice, and props for having audio feedback on every action. Picking up and dragging tiles was also super juicy because of the nice wobble, and the health bar UI was a joy to look at. Nice work!

I also worked on a card-based battle system, would love your thoughts on it.

Developer

Thank you for playing and I'm really glad you noticed the little things, I was worried about those things not being noticed but it feels nice.
Balancing is really difficult for me so I ended up making it easier because I also figured this a game jam and not many people are gonna wanna grind for a small, short game. Maybe when the jam is over I'll update the game so it feels more difficult. I appreciate the feedback and I will definitely check out your game.

I can see the risky! and I love the slot machine! I got 16k of XP in there!! love the game, love the gamble! congrats!

Thanks for playing, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I love this game. The turn based attack is simple and fun. The dino depictions are very cute as well. And the short fun facts about the dinos are the cherry on top. It has early 2000s educational game vibes. The slot machine is a bit OP though. I gambled away all my XP to reach level 19 and gave all my points to attack, which made me oneshot everything (except one of the high HP dinos). Still, I loved it. I hope you get the ranking you want :)

I'm glad you liked my game, I had so much fun making it and I love dinosaurs a lot so I was happy to include a bunch of them. I'm very bad at balancing, its probably my biggest issue so I thought it was better to make it easier than harder. Thank you!

Submitted

You are definitely right about that. I'm glad it wasn't absurdly hard, otherwise I wouldn't have enjoyed the game as much as I did now.

I kicked so many dino butts! Really fun and I love the gambling feature of the game. :] I like to imagine that we are fighting dinos with our bare hands!

Developer

Heck ya! I'm glad you enjoyed the game, thank you for checking it out! And I also liked to imagine that haha, we're a very strong paleontologist.

Nicely put together graphics and music/sound effects.   Appreciated the dinosaur sound and related image when entering the different zones. ( are those the types of dinosaurs found in those regional maps! haha, no I'm guessing there was a Pangea back then ? I'll have to ask Chat GPT to learn more about dinosaurs. solid work, good job )

Thank you for playing my game, I had a lot of fun making it. And nope, those aren't the dinosaurs that are in those regions, most of the dinosaurs in this game were found in North America. I just spread them out enough so it looked interesting in the map.

This was fun and a well rounded game for a week. The battling was good, made better with upgrades. The slot machine was great! A minor inconvenience was l kept pressing E when done with battle to leave, but that also starts a new one. Great game, good job :D

Developer

Thank you for your feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed it! I thought I had handled that issue that you mention but I guess I handled it everywhere else but the end screen, I never really noticed because I was always using click to get out of the end game menu.

Not a fan in general of card games, but the slot machine part here makes a big difference, and I've spent way too much time on it. What are the chances of getting the highest prize? Lol anyway, well made, stable, no bugs that I could found, very enjoyable. One little thing, or perhaps I've missed it, when you are in the battle mode, I could quite understand what the card's stats were... only after opening the journal and going into the screen to upgrade them, I knew.

Thank you for playing, I'm glad you enjoyed the slot machine.

For the slot machine, I used an array of weights that just changed how likely each image was to appear, I think it was [3, 2.5, 2, 2, 1.5, 1] or something like that. I don't know much about slot machines so I couldn't really think of a better way to make it challenging and fair at the same time.
