realy nice art and a cool idea i didnt get ver far because my typing speed isnt that great but thats just a skill isue
great game!
Interesting concept for a typing speed game! The pixel art looks nice, but the difficulty feels a bit too high and somewhat unfair at times. There are too many books to read within just six minutes. Sometimes I was sure I used the circle to keep the imps away while I started typing, but I still got interrupted and took damage. The visuals are great, but the game’s balance could use some improvement. Still, the gameplay itself is well done overall, it just needs a bit of polishing.
Art style and animation are very lovely! However, there are no indicators on anything or how to interact with anything (and nothing was interactable for me, I was just running around and trying to do anything at all). I wish there were some sort of sound or music to accompany such nice art! I wish there were more guidance. With some more polish, this could be a very nice game!
Thank you for your feedback! My fault the game turned out to be rather unintuitive :( Still, if you'd like to give it a try, here are some tips: wasd — movement, mouse roll — change active item, e — reading a book (could only be done if nearby light is on), LMB to use the active item, active items: torch — turns candles on, vodka — heals you (works only if you are injured), thurible — kills nearby bats and imps, chalk — draws a circle that makes you invisible to monsters.
art is very nice but there is absolutely no sound in this game at all, and no guidance on how you're supposed to play or what you're supposed to do, i was completely lost :(
I'm sorry to hear that :( I guess that I should made some kind of an in-game tutorial in the future. In case you would like to give it a second try: wasd — controls, mouse roll — change active item, e — reading a book (could only be done if nearby light is on), LMB to use the active item, active items: torch — turns candles on, vodka — heals you (works only if you are injured), thurible — kills nearby bats and imps, chalk — draws a circle that makes you invisible to monsters.
I bashed my head on this game for several minutes before and was ready to give up on it, but then I checked the description on the page and finally understood what I had to do and what the controls are.
After that, the game became much more interesting! I think the typing challenges were a clever metaphor for the story; typing letters backwards while being besieged by demons indeed felt very stressful. The game as a whole reminded me of some old MS-DOS games from my childhood, in both how original and how unforgivingly hard it was. I made several attempts to complete the first night, but had no luck with that. Most of the time, the timer ran off before I was able to complete all the books. The difficulty felt too unearned; this game would have benefited from a gentler difficulty curve, for example, you have to read only 3 books in the first night, then 6 on the second, and finally 9 on the third.
What this game would have also benefited greatly from is some sounds. I liked the sprite work and lighting alright, but without sounds, the game presentation felt lacking, like I did not have enough feedback to my actions, and thus they felt less impactful. Sounds from monsters and the environment would have also benefited greatly in building tension and creating a spooky atmosphere.
I also found the monsters irritating more than terrifying. A single swing of the bat's wing was enough to reset the whole challenge, which, considering how tight the timer was already, meant that I could have just restarted the night. I think it would have been more interesting then instead of resetting the challenge, monsters were creating some difficulties in completing it, like making the text blurry or shaking the camera while they are around, these kinds of things.
Overall, despite some of the shortcomings, I think the game has some interesting ideas and is impressive for a jam entry. Hopefully, my feedback and criticism will not discourage you from improving this game, because I think it has the potential to become an interesting, fun experience!
Thank you very much for your detailed review! I guess that the game turned out to be too difficult (and maybe even a bit tedious at some moments), the main reason for that is that I spent most of the time working with code and sprites, so I didn't manage to balance it (the same is with sounds and music -- didn't make them in time). Still I'm happy that the whole concept of the game seemed to be interesting, I'm going to rework it later, so criticism and constructive feedback are always appreciated!
No sweat, I totally understand the time constraints and being too focused on the code part. Game as it is has a solid foundation.
Took me an embarrassingly long amount of time to realize I needed to press E on the bibles. The items weren't exactly intuitive but you could view that as a feature in exploring the game mechanics on your own. What really threw me were the book that wanted me to "multiply the digits by their values". Quite frankly I have no clue what that means and couldn't figure it out. Art style was solid but I wish there were some sounds for the game as I think it would've added a lot to the experience.
Thank you for playing! This book requires you to type "3" three times, "4" four times etc. However, this particular book has a bug in the browser version of the game, sometimes digits simply are not typed, refreshing the page helps with it. Hope that I'll manage to fix it and add in-game tips/tutorial, as well as sounds and music!
Overall, I liked the pixel art in this entry, and I think the basic gameplay loop is pretty understandable once you read the description. Though I would've preferred if there were an in-game tutorial explaining things a bit more. Some music would've also gone a long way as well, since I felt like it was pretty quiet overall. Still, though, for being made in 1 week, this is pretty good. Great stuff and good game!
Thank you for your feedback! I'll create an in-game tutorial in the future updates, some sounds and music will be added too!
Nice little game! Pixel-art and animations look absolutely stunning, great job! The main loop of typing the letters seems nice and demons spawning after each typo really adds a lot to the tension and makes you more focused.
Keep up the good work!
Thank you for playing and for your feedback! I'm glad that you liked the visuals, since a lot of time was dedicated to its creation!
game looks and feels really good to play but seems a little hard to start off, with little fine tuning and could be a fun game!!
Thank you for playing! I'll try to polish it after the jam, so it would become more enjoyable and easy to progress over nights!
So this is what it feels like to be an exorcist alone in the dark.
I struggled with this game, but the concept is interesting tbh.
Thank you for playing! I'll try to rework the game after the jam and make it less difficult and more intuitive
Spaces mess everything up, never managed to win >.<
Art is cool
Thank you for playing! I guess that many aspects of the game (including typings spaces) should be made way more intuitive, still I'm glad that you enjoyed the visual part
