Game description
You are a child collecting VHS tapes but at some point you lost your leg and had to replace it with a prosthetic. now your jumping and dashing depends on mathematical functions!

Theme interpretation
The player's jumping and dashing magnitude are both based on wave functions that vary by time. The player can view these functions on the bottom right side of their screen and determine when's the best time to jump, or dash!

The concept of this game is cool as hell, and the execution is really solid! The whole idea of your movement changing according to an active wave is really awesome and I would love to see more of it :)

The art looks great! The different parts of the landscape complement each other really well and it all looks super tight- though maybe the electric balls can be a bit difficult to see.

The game is quite challenging, but I did manage to beat it- but the final level seemed to have a bunch of unnecessary spikes in it that felt as though they were punishing me for not having reached that part of the level before. I did notice there being some mechanics in the tutorial that didn't really get used in the final game, but that's just a game jam time restriction thing so no criticisms there :))

My main thought is that some parts of the game run in time with the player's wave, and others don't. I think the existence of the wave in the first place is a great idea, and obstacles are sometimes pulled off really well, but having some parts of the map (e.g: the two vertical lasers right next to each other on the last level, second electric ball on the last level) run on their own timings made those parts feel a bit unintuitive. I think that's an unfortunate tradeoff to have to make as I understand that having all the obstacles running on the player's waves would make the game less about platforming skill and more about just waiting for the right time- though maybe a bit more clarity on some parts would help? Like the two vertical lasers in lv2, for example, they're running on their own timings but it's really difficult to work out what those timings are- a graph or timer or something on top of them would solve that problem without locking them to the player's timing.

Holy essay, anyway I liked it a lot! Really good game, and would love to play some more of it if it continues to get worked on over time :)))

Developer

Thanks for your detailed review (:

yeah the game is def on the too precise side we are gonna work to fix that!

And holy yeah the timing issue is a very interesting observation, Adding a function to everything is a much larger scale than we currently have but if we ever come back to this game you bet I am doing that thank you!

Thanks for playing!

This is a really cool game, I love the idea of timing gameplay to what value a curve currently is!  You've got excellent pixel art, great music, and cool theming!

This game is very difficult in my experience.  Level 2 I was stuck on for quite a while and it only got harder from there.  Once I thought I was in the clear the spikes after the door lever got me and I struggled for a bit more.  I think it's tough to try and look at the corner of the screen for the wave state and control your character at the same time.  It would help if you could see the wave near the player, or maybe there was a noise where the pitch was dependent on the wave state so you could hear it and not have to look.  That may be difficult with having two separate functions though.   I also think radios should last longer, you kind of need perfect execution to get through obstacles before they time out.   This is all stuff that can get ironed out through playtesting, you've got a really solid core here!

Awesome job!

Developer

Thanks for the detailed review! I agree it’s definitely on the too precise side but hey too hard is better than too easy :D Perhaps once we add the rest of our levels and tweak the controls it’ll be a bit more balanced The wave indication thingy is def being worked on thank you! Radios have variable lengths depending on which levels and most radios that are at the start of a levels are actually permanent! they just restart when you die.

Thanks!

I also think that art and music was really good. Fun game overall, and I loved the jump height mechanic and its connection with the waves. Why not sync the wave with the music's beat? :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks! and that would have been a good idea true.. it’s a bit challenging but maybe in the post jam version (:

Art and music are great. The wave mechanic is cool. The tutorial line doesn't stand out very well - especially for the dash due to building in the background. The mechanic took a little time to get right at the beginning but it was fun later. Only thing is that I felt looking at the corner of the screen and playing at the same time was a little difficult to coordinate - but that might be me. Great game overall

The art style and the music are fantastic. The game mechanic is interesting, but I was a little bit confused about the negative values of the functions (I thought the dash would be in the opposite direction). As a physicist, I like the concept. I could use it as an example in my courses :). Good job!

Developer

I agree! it was the original vision actually. but honestly it was way too awkward to control (especially since it’s awkward even without this being the case lol) though thanks to you I think I’m gonna try to revisit the idea to see if it can work afterall. Thanks!

I really like the arts and the concept.

Though it proves very difficult to understand the wave timing. I struggled just to pass the first level, then on first level I struggled to land on the platform as it felt quite slippery.

But other than that a lot of very cool mechanics.

Very well done!

Developer

Thanks for your feedback! Hopefully those will be fixed by next patch thanks to y’all!

I definitely adore the art direction!

The concept is interesting and occasionally it works quite well. It is definitely something I have not seen before, and very loyal to the theme of the jam.

I think the key problem is that it is a bit hard to follow the wave and playing at the same time. I would prefer to see the wave around the character. The wave is also so quick that it does not give much leeway for the player to fail. This is especially prominent at the start of the game where it may take multiple tries for the player to make the first jump and the jump+dash combo.

Controlling the character also feels a bit wonky — almost like there was some lag on all of your inputs aside from jumping and dashing.

But overall, this is a very solid entry. The general idea is innovative and very thematic. The art is among the best I have seen in this jam. Congratulations for the whole team!

Developer

Thanks for your feedback!

following the waves is def an issue. though thanks to feedback we already have some more cues both visual and auditory that will be in the next build (:

I def underdid the acceleration and deacceleration haha thanks for telling us about this!

The overall feel of the game was cool, both in mechanics and Art Direction.
I feel like linking the wave system to set a rhythm onto something as fundemental as jumping might just be a bit too frustrating to pickup, i'd like to see it be more of a QTE on the dash thingy that you have to initiate first, so it becomes more an active challenge, then a passive nuisance. (just my 2c on the design, nothing to write home about, gg guys!)

Developer(+1)

Especially now that you mention it, I completely agree! it was annoying in testing too but was def too late to change the premise of the game haha. Thanks for your feedback will def make sure to balance it more for the post jam!

Art Style is Amazing! Unique Game Mechanic!!

but I got little confused at the beginning. Looking forward to the future version of it!!

Developer

Thanks for your comment! will indeed try to make the tutorial more extensive

Cool game. I like the concept a lot, and it was well executed.

Developer

Thanks!

Great idea with using cosine and sine to affect player movement! Definitely waves are here

As per word of feedback, adjusting controls to be a little more snappy would help the overall feel ,for example, not overshooting platforms when jumping .

Overall great work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your feedback! The controller being the most common issue is fair so def added to our list (:

Developer

Hello,

Due to building problems the version that was submitted at the start was unplayable, fixed now. the speedrunning leaderboard was also reset for that. have fun!

Error at end of first level confirmed. Overall good effort. Camera a little janky. Agree a tutorial would help.

Developer

Thank you for your feedback! We had a tutorial in before submitting but because of some bugs, it wasn’t included in the build. After fixing them, it should be there now.

Nice game! It crashes when finishing the first level. Maybe a tutorial would be nice, I did not know there was a dash function.

Overall a great game, but I got an error after completing a level

Developer(+1)

it should be fixed now
