This was an awesome narrative experience.
The personalities of the crewmates really showed through their logs, and every sleep cycle, I was interested to see what each of them said. Great way to frame the story!
Amazing graphics, didn't expect such an interesting story with simple gameplay
One of my teammates mentioned that this was one of the best games of the jam, and he was absolutely spot on. I can easily see this game on Steam. Everything is very well thought out, from the use of lighting to the way the story is told. The only thing I’d change to make the experience more immersive and smooth is to have the option to zoom in with [E] when reading the screens. Otherwise, my sincerest congratulations. You’re definitely a top contender!!!
One of the best games I've played in this jam! So simple yet so smooth, from visuals to story, to controls. I'm in this jam for learning how to fight scope creeping, and this is where I'll take the biggest lesson from! This is production quality! Love the goldish style!
I only had a bit of a difficulty during the first day - I couldn't easily tell which device was what - luckily the ship was small. I like the white subtle outlines in the dark also, they helped a lot.
And the views towards the end - masterpiece!
Nicely done! Good luck turning this into a 2 hours story and hitting that publish button!
Pretty awesome game!
I gotta say though, I feel like a dirtbag - I've been lecturing the other crew members about staying positive and cleaning up the rust, while I haven't even attempted once to shrub a single speck of rust and just went back to sleep.
It's fun that our games landed at a somewhat similar art style, although if you'd want my advice in regards to shader work, I would recommend converting the rgb colors to hsv via the colorspace conversion node, apply the posterization to just the v component before converting them back. Simply posterizing the rgb values, like I assume you are doing right now leads to somewhat garish and unnatural gradients, which of course could be by design, but doing it the way I suggested gives you more control over the color, while keeping the cell shaded effect.
The atmosphere and writing are great.
I had a difficult start with the game as I didn't know what to do initially and my first cycle was bumping into everything before finally getting the prompts done. Of course I only had to figure this out once, but it still wasn't enjoyable and took a long time. In the same regard I also missed a lot of the dialogue in the first few cycles, as I didn't expect anyone elses display to change (I assumed I was playing all of the crew consecutively and not just one guy, so I only read the messages I left).
How you tackled the theme was great! And I agree with a lot of the other commenters, that this was pretty much the best application of decay and cosmic horror, I've seen this jam.
While I do think the smear on the life pod has potential to be iconic, I think you could easily improve the packaging of your page with better screenshots. Even on the title it would be more striking if you would show not only the smiley, but also the silhouette of the pod.
Because the game is a somewhat large download for a jam project, I think it's important to present it as best as you can - if the comments weren't as stellar, I don't think I would've given this project a chance.
Oh don't mind me, I just played peak. Fantastic work, gorgeous. I loved the shots of jupiter, I adore anything space related, so seeing a planet that close was beautiful and super heavy when put together with the story. Two tiny pieces of nitpick, it can use a bit more music, gameplay can be a teeny bit more refined. But these are very very minor. You should be really proud of the game you put out. Top tier stuff.
About the music - there were a total of 8 tracks in the game, one for each cycle besides the last. Did you mean more variety?
Hm weird, I don't think most of them played for me or were too subtle, Will play the game again later to check.
The music is streamed so if you did this in an environment that might screw with that then it could be a culprit
yeah im without words to talk about this game, I was hooked in an instant, every cycle i feared of something and that growing hopelessness as everything goes wrong, my God. You guys did a spetacular job.
This game. Holy shit. What can I even say? This game is exactly why I find cosmic horror so compelling as a genre. The subtle growing dread, knowing something was going wrong and being unable to stop it, the absolute futility of it all, the lack of any simple explanation or answer, paired with the absolutely gorgeous-yet-haunting shots of Jupiter outside? Absolutely fantastic, I was glued to my seat the entire way through.
There are so many things I could gush about here. The writing was fantastic, loved the interplay and juxtapositions of everyone's reactions. For such a short period of time, I felt like we got a good grasp at who everyone was, and loved getting to see their dynamics. Made it an absolutely gutwrenching experience. The art was absolutely gorgeous--I'm particularly in love with the lighting/shading on everything. And the shots of Jupiter and the world outside had me speechless every time. It perfectly captured everything beautiful and terrifying about space all in one. And the music and sound really just brought the whole thing home. It was subtle but so poignant--especially at a certain part I will not name due to spoilers.
Literally the only thing I could even try to knock off point-wise is just nitpicking on controls. Would have loved an up and down button and some sort of soft highlight or something around the interactable objects, at least for the first cycle. I got lost trying to search for things on that first round. Otherwise, I have no other complaints. This game is so well thought through and polished, I have to struggle to even think of any complaints, frankly. I would buy this game as is.
Absolutely fantastic experience. I will be thinking about this game for a long time. Can't wait to see whatever games you all do in the future, because god damn.
(Also: your title screen picture is so mean after playing the game. Rude. 10/10 love it.)
Go make money with this, why are you releasing this here for free?
the reactor switch is fiddley, things need a wider hitbox to be easier to hit and i would have loved a up and down control to help maneuver around the ship.
that's all i can say man like... this is a professional quality experience, i would pay money for this. people would pay money for this. like as is.
Writer here, I'm really happy to hear you enjoyed! We're a couple of nerds who wanted to test the waters with our first dedicated project/game that wasn't a prototype. We really appreciate the kind words, it definitely inspires us to continue.
Me and the Twitch chat were rivetted, there's an audience for this for sure. the writing is top notch, if i had any critique the narrative device of the messages on the screens was a little hard to comprehend at first, being able to look back through a log book might help those moments when i got a little lost, i think i only noticed 1 spelling error, and otherwise all four characters felt nice and disctinct, and their representation of four aspects of grief was a really nice touch c:
The visual style is really impressive, I loved it! I hope you keep using it for future projects, it works really really well
It's a little trick I learned called "masking the bullshit" lol. The ship is mostly a stock grey color because i didn't have time to do textures for all of it, so I compensated in the post processing and lighting to make it look pretty. Most of my time in the art department went into Jupiter
I loved this! My game also used 'orbital decay' as our implementation of the theme.
yeah it's weird there's like 4 jupiter games lol!
Jupiter is the sea of the solar system, it's even got an eye in real life!
I thought yours was a really neat take on it too! Happy to see the space setting nerds taking advantage of this theme, haha.
This game is AWESOME !!! every details adds up and make the game very impactfull, well done.
I was the lead developer for this game, happy to hear feedback :)
