Strong theme and atmosphere! I liked this puzzle format (a lot), but frankly, I feel there is a mismatch between the tight time limit and the format of the puzzle: If I want to perform meticulous translation work on books and notes, I want that to be slow and deliberate, not brute-forced due to time constraints. Maybe a different trade-off would have been more effective here.
Additionally: Actions don't always feel like they have an effect: I was quite confused by the safe-combination, since it seemed like I was just booted out of that screen after entering the combination.
However, I can absolutely see a game about a desperate librarian trying to keep it together as the world falls into chaos, decay and darkness around them!
What an interesting take on puzzle game, reminds me of "rusty lake" games. Well done
This was really fun. I like word puzzles. And the time limit made it extra tense. Great job.
Who doesn't love a good puzzle! It was quite difficult the first run actually. I had to play twice, and I won, barely. The win condition didn't trigger when I had all 5, I panicked because I had 15 seconds left and I was 100% sure I was right! I clicked the same selections again and one of them triggered the win! You we're really tricky, you had a 2 words that had the same 2-3 letters to start with, I really thought I could get away with translating the first letters only! Good job protecting against that!
To preface, i don't believe i'm your target audience, the point and clicks like this generally don't interest me. I think your style is good, though it doesn't resonate with me, and translation based puzzles really are an interesting design space.
That said, i wish there was an in game way to put down when i've learned a letter, and that the timer were longer to give me more time to explore before sitting down to translate, i needed at least 2 playthroughs to translate the book. I also successfully translated the book, and clicked the right words, and nothing happened, i still lost when the timer ran down. So i'm not sure if that's a glitch or not, but that's the point you lost me as a player.
Still incredible work, the sprite work looks great even if it isn't my thing, i'm glad i got to play what you made c:
The visuals are nice, and the grainy effect fits really well. The sound matches the atmosphere nicely, too. The time limit actually helps with immersion. However, I personally didn’t understand the puzzle—the most logical solution to the spell didn’t seem to work. Maybe we just clicked the wrong thing :)
Nice art and dreadful atmosphere (in a good way). The eldritch being slowly consuming the environment was a strong touch. The music works, game could use better implementation of SFXs. The puzzle while being clear is a tad bit confusing, but that might just be a skill issue on my end, also I think you can use layered solution rather than one big answer to show progression better. Overall pretty decent entry!
Enjoyed the atmosphere and art was a through back to some old pc games I enjoy playing. The music was good too. I tried solving it, but after several attempts, the most logical solutions didn't pan out for me. I was hoping to figure it out to find out what would become of me. More varied sound effects would be helpful so the player knows if they are just wrong, or on the wrong track. I'll have to come back and give it another go sometimes.
Thanks for your comment and for the art and music. I'll keep in mind what you said about the SFX; I made some, but we couldn't include them all....
Great game, and race against time adds even more dread to the atmosphere!
Thank you so much ! We thought it was a good idea and you approved it!
Your art style is really cool.
I loved the way the scene evolved.
Sadly, I could not solve the puzzle. I would have loved to see what the win screen looks like.
Well done!
Thank you, it's thanks to Dreamcatcher and Emily, they did a great job! You should try again, I'm sure you'll succeed! Thank you!
Solving the puzzle felt pretty fun! I liked how some clues were supposedly innaccessible (or I was just bad at finding them), forcing me to make educated guesses on the correct words. The lack of randomness between playthroughs though meant I was eventually able to brute force the translation by just replaying two or three times. I tried also playing the incantation in reverse after solving it but was a bit sad nothing transpired.
I understand the need for stakes, but I found that the tightness of the timer felt a bit ill-suited to the deduction portion. I found myself wishing there was more time, extra time on each discovered word, or something else to avoid the first playthrough feeling like an automatic fail. With that being said there's something there with having to budget time between looking for clues and applying the clues, but that only holds up until you know where all the hiding places are.
The art style is great, for me it kind of felt like a blend between a detective noir and eldritch encounters, and that really suits the premise.
Hi, thanks for playing the game, I'm glad you liked it, Your ideas sound really cool too, I love that we can do that later !
