Nice game! I especially enjoyed the secret ending as well, really cool way to guide the player somewhere. I liked the handling on the ship too, though it did make me wish I could be a little bit speedier. Enjoyable though, nice job!

Developer

Thank you!  Appreciate you playing and providing feedback!  I'm glad you liked the night sky and shooting stars!  Those wound up being some of my favorite parts as well!  Yep I hear that especially with the breadfruit weighing you down post boost (and even without it) the non boost speed feels a tad frustratingly slow.  Better to not frustrate the player lolz.  I'll try to find the balance of rewarding chaining boosts while not being so dang slow without them haha.  Cheers!

The nighttime transition was really cool! Also, everyone lived happily ever after xD

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much!  I was happy with how the night time vibes feel!  I notice a minor lag hiccup in browser when transitioning to night.  I wonder how I can ascertain why it has a lag spike there.  Thanks for playing and commenting!!  And for finding the secret ending XD

I like the fruit being used to boost. There's an interesting side-effect of not getting the boost when your inventory is full. So collecting more isn't always better. This could be used to lead the player into interesting areas, like the secret. It's fun to line them up and go wheee fast. Cute breadfruit model. Naturally a breadfruit includes a loaf of bread.

Developer(+1)

Thank you!  I Appreciate you playing and leaving feedback!  I agree that's totally where the fun is with this game is figuring out how to chain the boosts.  Sometimes you want to leave a close one for later or leave one at sea so you can get the correct boosts

I totally hear you that using them to lead the player would work well.  I was thinking a course might be nice.  With some obstacles.  Trying to keep up the wheee fast and never slowdown.

Especially thank you for noticing the breadfruit model haha that was like 90% of the reason I went with this idea and you're the first person to comment on it XD

Wow! This is nice

Developer

thank you so much!  I'm having fun learning godot and the community is so cool and nice.  Cheers!

I really liked your idea and especially your use of the shooting stars. Such a great way to get people to go someplace. I felt like a cat following a laser pointer. I did find the placement of the breadfruit a little frustrating. I think it could have felt better to move around if they were arranged more like a track so you were rewarded for going the “right” way. Right now it felt more like I could just slowly turn around and eventually get it, but then I miss out on the thrill of going fast. But also I wasn’t super incentivized to do so if that makes sense.
Minor especially in the game jam but I found it a bit jarring going from the audio settings to the keybinding settings and the scale of the buttons jump so drastically.

Developer

Well put yeah I totally get that.  I think a track is a great way to reward the chaining of boosts together and make it feel more intentional.

Yeah I was noticing the menu scaling issues too XD I'm using maaacks game template. It's awesome but I haven't figured out the scaling yet like the main menu buttons are too small and then the keybind settings menu is... jarring haha.  Figured it wasn't a deal breaker for a jam so didn't spend much time on it but I like the focus on accessibility so I'll endeavor to include those menus in my intentional stylings moving forward.

Thanks for playing and sharing valuable feedback!  Appreciate you!!

I was a bit confused by the speed up/slow down mechanics, but smooth controls otherwise!

Developer

Thanks for playing and providing feedback!  Yep I hear that and you're right I think they are too confusing as is.  I wonder how best to convey the boost from the breadfruit followed by being weighed down by your cargo.  It's supposed to kind of represent a boost in morale amongst your crew and then the reality of less space and heavier load aboard the ship.  Also to incentivize chaining them one after the other.

Maybe I could have a BOOST text hover over the boat after collection and a timer ticks down and then it shows a red arrow going down saying "weighed down" or some such.

This one is great, one of the few 3d games I’ve played and it’s really nice looking and feeling. It’s really satisfying to catch a string of breadfruit and get your speed up high. Also found the secret happy (or not) ending! I did feel like during the times when my ship was going slow (because I hadn’t gotten any breadfruit) it was a bit *too *slow and frustrating at times. But I see why you made that decision, it seems like it’s kind of a hard problem to get the balance dialed in perfectly.

Developer

Thank you for playing and leaving feedback!!  3D was one of my goals for this jam!  I am a blender noob as well as this being my first godot game.  I'm having a good time learning and I'm finding godot super capable its awesome!

I also felt that the ship might be a bit *too* slow when not in boost mode, certainly don't want to frustrate the player lol but also want to incentivize chaining your boosts so yeah tradeoffs there.  In general the speed variation feels like it needs some tuning and better readouts for the player.

Cheers!  Glad you had a good time!

nice little 3D game, a simple concept well executed, and a beautiful night sky :) got the secret ending too, yay!

Developer

Thank you!  Yeah I was content to keep it simple with this one, glad it landed with you!  Its my first game in godot and I'm still a noob at blender and 3D in general but its so fun to learn and level up with such a welcoming and uplifting community of game devs!  And thats because of people like you!  Thanks for playing and sharing your thoughts!!

great game, I also agree the night time looks really good. and I like the fact that you can set your own keybinds

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing!  Appreciate you leaving a comment :) Really helps to know during this learning process what "works" and what "doesn't".  I'll keep night skies and atmosphere in the arsenal.

I owe the key binding goodness largely to having used maaacks game template https://maaack.itch.io/godot-game-template I found it while browsing the GWJ jam page.  I definitely recommend and will use again.  Took a bit of setup but is well documented and certainly saves time overall.  Glad I found it early in my godot journey.  Cheers!

The nigh time is very nice.

Developer

Thank you!  I was happy with how that turned out 🌙

This is a fun and simple game! I enjoyed getting speed boosts to get more bread fruit. I liked the rings around the bread fruit - reminded me of some n64 games I remember playing. Honestly, I kinda wish there were more levels! I definitely replayed it a couple of times. Good job! :)

Developer(+1)

I grew up on N64 so there's probably no coincidence that the rings are reminiscent of that era XD Thank you so much for playing and leaving feedback!  Curious to hear your ideas for other levels.  Perhaps more "course like" pickup routes so you have to figure out how to chain your boosts together?

Submitted

Could definitely see some more course like pickup routes with obstacles. I also wanted a bigger ship to carry more bread fruit so maybe some sorta ship upgrade feature?

This was really cool! The gameplay was fun and rewarding.  It took me a little bit to realize why my speed kept fluctuating, however. I also thought the secret ending was funny. Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much!  Appreciate you playing and leaving feedback!!  That makes sense regarding the speed fluctuation.  Making that mechanic more clear is a learning for me.  Cheers to you Scootch thank you!

Nice game! Gameplay is concise and to the point, and you incorporated the wild cards in a fun way.

Once I realized the bread pickups sped up the boat, it helped add to the game play, planning a route to keep the boost up throughout.

Good entry all around, and I think you executed the out at sea aesthetic well :)

Developer

Thank you so much for playing and providing feedback!  Really appreciate it!  I think a lesson for me is regarding readability of mechanics.  The boost is kinda meant to represent the excitement of the crew but then it also weighs you down a bit afterwards.  Chaining them together winds up being one of the more interesting parts so making that more clear for the get go will be of benefit.  Cheers!

Nice simple little game. The shooting stars were so pretty.

It felt a little odd the changing speed on the ship but once I figured out it was tied to the fruit I played around it and that gave it a bit of gameplay.

Loved the little sound for when I tried to pick up breadfruit when full, had me laughing out loud

It's a little brief, but you're solo on your first jam totally understandable, an easy way to add a bit more to the gameplay might have been to have the fruit bob around in the water a little bit?

Developer

Thank you so much!  Yeah I was wondering if I should be a bit more clear about the boost / speed mechanic.  Collecting the breadfruit gives you a boost but then once that's done it actually weighs you down a bit until you score it so the goal becomes chaining them together effectively.

Haha glad you got a laugh out of it!  It is indeed rather brief but as you spotted its my first game jam in godot and was done solo.  Kept the scope manageable but left some ideas on the cutting room floor.  I like the fruit bobbing so you have to catch them :)

Cool game, I managed to get the secret ending too (:

I'm curious if you did the shaders yourself? The shooting stars and the little dither effect on the rings are neat.

Developer

Thank you so much for playing!  And kudos to you for finding the secret ending too!!

I did all the materials with in engine tooling like for the environment (fog),  water, and the ring dither.   I found the ring dither specifically under StandardMaterial3D > Distance Fade > Mode: Object Dither.  Wasn't even really planning on doing it but then I found that setting and liked it haha.  Water effect was fun with a noise generated texture for the normal map on the plane.

The shooting stars I made in engine with mesh primitives (hemisphere  star, cyliner cone long tail, and transparent sphere glow).  I tried the glow effect from environment but couldn't get it to emit really so I just used transparency on a bigger sphere around the main part of the star.  The stars are not actually in the sky haha they're kinda just right above the player but the illusion mostly holds.

The boats and breadfruit I made in blender but only textured the breadfruit.

Oh cool, it's nice to know all this stuff is built-in haha. Especially the dither, I'll have to keep that in mind if I make a 3D game.
