Nice game! I also enjoyed dodging those speedy roombas, but found the movement pretty tough otherwise. Also, while cool that the music changes when there's an enemy around, this also meant the music changed quite often when chased which became a bit jarring.
Still, nice job, and congrats on your first gwj!
Thank you very much! I'm not sure if I "consciously kept things mysterious" rather than just "stumbled into a confusing setup", but I'll take it :)
And my bad about the resolution! Somehow I set my mind to 100x100 at the start, and figured a fixed 800x800 would be more than big enough, and just left the full screen. Should've realised this won't do for any x720 screen of course. I'll be sure to fix it if/when I continue this project!
Thank you very much! Art is always my favourite aspect to work on. For audio I work in Reason, and on this game I've primarily used Surge XT, an open source synthesizer plugin, for both music and fx. The pixel art I've done in Krita, which works fine, though I should probably look into getting Aseprite.
Thanks for playing! It's definitely not you, it's a little overcomplicated. Basically, when you look at a signal it changes color according to the category of signal (friendly/diplomatic/hostile), and any response from the right category will buy you some time. But you'll need to scan to read the message and figure out the precise response. Get a greeting, send a greeting back. A response from the wrong category will get you a strike.
As is tradition I spent way too much jam time on the art and had to hastily string together some sort of game before the deadline :' )
Thanks for giving it a go! Its definitely not the most intuitive, the whole thing came together a bit haphazardly and I tend to lose myself in the art before I really have a game :)
To clarify; Scan signals to read them, and respond in the same way. Get a greeting, send a greeting back. Getting the manner right but not the precise response buys some time.
Its all a bit convoluted, :'D but thanks again for playing!
Cool concept! Unfortunately, unless I'm doing something wrong, I think the first puzzle doesn't quite work? The switches don't seem to activate when they are outside the field of view.
The overall vibe is nice, though the sound effects are a bit intense, perhaps some atmospheric sound would tie things together.
I like the idea though, and it clicked instantly what I had to do after the first door.
Congrats on submitting, nice job!
Incredible game!!
And I haven't even played co-op yet, I'll definitely come back to this one.
Can only really list a things that where great; Gorgeous art and shader work, lovely sound design, and very easy to pick up. That spirit effect with the sounds from beyond coming in, absolutely fantastic.
I'll definitely give it another shot tomorrow for co-op, but this is already a 5-star game!
Incredible job all around!
Thank you very much!!
I can definitely agree with your points. As usual my planning wasn't great, so playtesting was once again kept to a minimum :' )
I wanted things to feel fairly relaxed as I thought it would at least give people some time to get to grips with the UI. There certainly were plans for moving signals, signal jammers, etc... but I'm happy I got it as far as it is, today was quite a rollercoaster.
The 100x100 resolution was something I for some reason set my mind to from the start, and as the game grew the UI kept eating away more screen space, glad you found it workable though!
Thanks again for playing!
Congrats on another banger! I sadly couldn't participate this time but had to come and check this out of course.
First off, obviously a dino band rocking out moments before the asteroid, completely smashes the theme.
Absolutely oozing with style too, the palette and character design, really love what you did with the 2D elements in a 3D world. The characters are so great, and the outlined silhouettes make them stand out so beautifully in the world. Once again your dialogues are fantastic, the band immediately pulls you into their little world, and the sight of poor Trey looking back at you with that asteroid in the background is just beautiful and devastating.
Also I really enjoyed the opening interaction of just looking around an empty stage, really nice touch :D
Then there's THAT SONG.
It has not left my head all day and it's welcome to stay. Absolute jam, blankets the whole experience in fuzzy, warm, melancholy goodness. Just fantastic work, and I'd love to hear more of the Boyz.
Awesome job!!
Yoooo thank you so much!! Yeah, I've been trying to get back in the jam habit again for a few months now, I was just playing some of your games again the other day!
I wanted to make a kind of magnetic spin on "Cleaning the System" by Nasheik, if you happen to know it. Played around with a lot of different variations in the magnet and the scale of the levels, still not sure what I'll do with it. But really appreciate you sticking with it 'til the end, and that's actually a faster time than most playtests! There's also my personal best in the screenshots if you'd like to give that a go ;)
Had a lot of fun putting the art together too, the UI was kind of an happy accident I leaned into at the end, but I'm glad people noticed.
Thank you so much for taking the time to play, and your kind words.
Hope you've been well, and hope to jam again soon! :D
Much appreciated! It's definitely not just you, I think I have the "difficult to master" down, but not the "easy to learn".
Spent over half the jam just messing with various iterations, rigidbody, free rotation, many different raycast setups. Of course by the end I had a lot of practice myself. Still playing around with it!
Thanks again for giving it a go!
Very fun game! Really enjoyed the animal buddies as weapons, and that you can even stack them. One thing I noticed (unless it's intentional) is that hearts don't necessarily disappear when you touch them, so I was able to get a lot of health out of a single heart. Otherwise I can only really repeat the comments below. Nice job!
Very cool!! Really enjoyed this take on the theme, and the overall style and setting. The way you set up the gameplay loop was just excellent, really liked the switch from driving around, exploring the buildings and navigating inside the EV. Certainly there's loads of possibilities here to expand, be it with puzzles or enemies to fight. Awesome job!
