Very impressive entry! It's a very polished and fun-looking game.

The visuals are actually pretty simple, but there's subtle effects that make it feel really nice to play. I also appreciate not just the high contrast in the ship colors, but small differences that help the players pick up on them more easily.

On the mechanics side, I also think it's a very innovative and fun twist on the snake's formula. However, there was  a few things that I didn't enjoy about the gameplay. For me, the active items are not a very good choice. They are very powerful for sure, but in this kind of chaotic, fast paced games I find myself to never be able to keep track of all of the information, and active items add to it. I can't even remember the button to activate it. So imo, it's not worth it to have active items in this kind of games. The text were also small in many places (I played on default size on the web), so it's a bit harder to read. The design choice of instant death if you hit the head into another color is also pretty unforgiving. I know it's reminiscent of classic Snake, but as a whole with your game, I feel it's way too punishing.

Overall, still a massively well made entry. Great job!

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback! We're looking into polishing the controls and hope to release a patch sometime in the future with improvements you and other players suggested. We hope you still had a good time with the game at its current state :)

Awesome project! We also did a train game... just not in space XD Kidding aside, I had fun playing your game. The music choice is phenomenal. The gameplay is responsive. I'd say a tutorial could help since there is quite a bit going on. For example, for me it was not immediately obvious that I had to manually use power-ups, I thought they were activated at the moment of pick-up specially since some items like the gatling gun do activate right away. Still, well done and good luck!

Developer

Thank you for the feedback! we will keep this in mind and patch up the game sometime in the future. We appreciate this :D

Ok, I had time to play it before the voting ends...haha
LOVE the visuals, they are really really great!
The vibes, the style, the music, just my jam!!
Love how you interpret the theme as well! just creative and well executed!
The game is VERY polished for what you guys proposed to do and you pulled it off!
Many systems implemented with impecable UI.. chef's kiss! 😙🤌

I can see this as a full game release with only a bit of tweaks! ✨✨

I'll write down here my impressions, please don't see this as complains or anything, but more as 'how the experience was through the eyes of a newcomer', haha! You guys can use as data points or just discard anything you feel not useful:

  • I really like how the systems are integrated and work for the goal of growing the connections and also protect them. Peak design 💪
  • I know that 10 days is hard for calibrating and doing everything, but I feel that for a game that's HEAVY in active power up usage and commands, things could come in small bite sizes, to help the player get used to 'what thing does what'. Your game would benefit a lot from a 'tutorial stage', where we get to see one power up type at each time, in sequence , so we can know best what to do... or even turn some of them into passive abilities. I saved the controls guide on my right screen but even with it, it was a bit hard to know what to do/when to press something, depending on a situation... it IS a skill issue on my part, for sure, but I felt a bit overwhelmed with everything happening on the screen, haha (felt like me learning Dota 2 all over again 😜)
  • I get that consumables and power ups have their backgrounds, but they could also use colored icons inside. On a fast paced environment, after a few popups, the brain makes faster 'connections' to 'what does what' if we can quickly differentiate the symbols, so your game will definitely benefit from having them all 'different' but in the same 'design style', if you get what I mean... this or having them sit at specific positions on the UI, like... you could have slots for everything ready, like a grid, and the icons just populate their place when you get them.
  • One thing that is more of a visual opinion is that, while I love the asteroids and planets around and they give a lot of charm and immersion, I caught myself avoiding them , because I thought they were solid.. haha! The game could benefit if you add a liiiitle bit of atmosferic perspective to them, so the brain doesn't 'pop' when we are flying fast and run into them...

Other than these suggestions, this was such a fun game to play! ✨✨😊

Thank you so much for the experience and kudos for the team!

Awsome game. Genuinely fun. This needs to be an .io game with a big multiplayer world!

Great game ! The page is really nice too. The only issue I had with both is that I didn't know how to play in game, and the tips is quite a bit far into the page ! Otherwise it's amazing !

reminded me of slither.io, with power ups and modified trains, hell yeah! I still didn't figure out to get out of wanted state and how I got into wanted state in the first place. I also noticed that length of the train does not matter because there are different colors which destroy you instantly. The powerups were also a nice touch. One suggestion would be have only 1 slot for powerup and have only 1 key to activate it. If you pick up a second powerup activate the powerup you have instantly. having to press different keys for different powerups while controlling the ship constantly was a little bit annoying in my opinion. passive upgrades would also be a nice touch. very well done for a 10-day jam. Awesome polish and visuals!

Thank you so much for the feedback! I hope you had a good time aboard the pirate express :D

controls fry my brain a little, but I got used to them.

got into it quickly, and is very repayable :)

Excellent polish on the mechanics. you've scoped really well.

great going

Developer

Thank you for sticking with the controls, I hope you had a good time still! :D

SUPER well polished, really well made, great mechanics, fits the theme really well and its really fun! i had some trouble finding same colored trains sometimes but thats not a big deal since you can change your train color and also find upgrades around the level

my only feedback is that the fact touching the wrong colored train completely destroys you feels a little bit unfair, especially since thats really the only way you can die it seems, since gunshots from other ships dont damage you as much

that said, REALLY great job!!!

Developer(+1)

Appreciate your feedback! fortunately we have a powerup that can prevent from deadly collisions, which is the Emergency Eject.

Stock up on these and you will be unstoppable, har har har! thank you so much for playing our game :D

PERFECT, time to be unstoppable then!!!

Great game. I was a little lost when it through you into the game and then after trying a few times I finally realized the gimmick of actually getting the other trains. I think it would help to include that in that little message you already have for expanding the train so its clear that you're looking  for train ends with the same color. Other that that little confusion the game was great. Very polish and cohesive. Well done!

Developer

thank you for sticking with our game and learned the mechanics. We really appreciate it!

Very nice and polished game. Had fun playing it. Though I still sucked at it. Great job making it. Thanks for the game.

Developer

Thank you! I hope you still enjoyed your time playing :D

Easily one of the most polished games I have ever seen in a game jam. Also, very very fun! Great combination of mechanics going on which really elevates the whole thing. I ended up using Joy2Key and hopping on an arcade stick and then it really clicked for me. Although that meant ignoring the protect ship mechanics from using a mouse, I was able to hit the leaderboards. The music choice was perfect too, never got old. Really fun game here with a lot of potential, thanks for sharing.

Developer(+1)

That's amazing! using an arcade stick for an authentic experience. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to implement controller support, but we really appreciate you going the extra mile to set it up yourself with Joy2Key! our hats are off to you :D

Very polished snake.io style game. Well done!

Developer

ahoy! thank you for playing :D

Submitted(+1)

A very nice Snake and combat space shooter combo. The idea is well executed. Even for a team of two, this is a great achievement and excellent work. The game has a slightly retro look and is somewhat reminiscent of the 80s and 90s.

Great work, both of you.

Developer

Thank you for playing! we really appreciate it :)
