I like this one a lot!  Like others have said, it took me a while to get use to the timing for speeding up, but movement was quite fun once I got the hang of it.  I also like that the tighter sections on the tracks force a nice tradeoff of speed versus precision.  My main recommendation would be that the game would really benefit from a tutorial that steps through how to speed up (including the timing), and then maybe one more track after the tutorial that doesn't have any really tight spaces, just as another opportunity to get used to the movement without too much risk (the current level 1 already has some really tricky sections!).

I love the aesthetics of this game, too.  The graphics are really nice and the retro vibe is great.  The music is also really solid.

All in all, there's a steep learning curve here, but once you get it down, the movement is a blast.  I had fun with it.  Great work!

Yeah I agree with most people here that it takes a bit of effort to figure out how to speed up properly and some of the narrow levels specifically make it hard to generate speed but once you DO figure it out it really starts to feel satisfying and I managed to get all golds (yay!).

My only recommendation is to swap the instrument for the count-down as it was very ear piercing even on low volume 😅.

I like the idea and the aesthetic of the graphics. The music also compliments art style and gameplay well. At first I had some trouble speeding up, but once I understood the timing, it was satisfying to start blitzing through sections of levels. It's also cool that it registers your best time and that your progress saves. I would be nice if there was a little more level variety (obstacles, boosts, etc.), but the different layouts of the walls sufficed. Cool game overall!

This is a cool idea, I think in execution can be improved however. Firstly, I wasn't able to make the wheel go any faster, despite trying a few different techniques - switching rapidly between left and right, doing full 360s etc.

Also would be cool if the timer was bigger, took me a while to notice it in the top right corner. Otherwise a decent foundation to build from!

I’ll try doing a better tutorial, and i should have explained there is a bit of a time where you can’t boost when starting to turn because i wanted to prevent just mashing directions so that the player has to tumble

Vector art probably would have faired better lol

As other commenters have said, it takes a bit of time to understand how to go faster, but once you do the game becomes a pleasant experience that can be really challenging to grab the Gold Star on each level.

Another thing that wasn't clear at first is that hitting walls / grass doesn't make you lose, it just resets your speed to 200, so it cam even become a strategic choice to accept colliding at times.

The music was really good and matched the gameplay, which was nice, and the art direction works well for what it wants to be. My only gripe on this aspect is that it's difficult to understand what it is you're controlling (I mean it's in the game's name so I might just be stupid on this one, but it didn't strike me as a wheel)

Nicely done!

That was a fun game with a unique steering/speeding up mechanic. It did take some time to learn how to efficiently speed up but it was just part of the process for playing a new game so I was fine with that. Great work!

Nice game! I had trouble understanding how to speed up at first, maybe have a tutorial on that part? But once I did, it was fun trying to go super fast. Good game!

I did not quite understand how to speed up. The music is nice, and the graphics have a distinct retro vibe.

Oh hey, another time-trial racing game with a weird control scheme, I dig it! Spent way too much time with this, but still missing 2 gold stars. The camera spinning is a little dizzying, but I'm not sure a static camera would have been better -- maybe this is one of those rare cases where I would have preferred a 3D game over a 2D one. Still, had a lot of fun with this one :)

This was surprisingly fun once the movement clicked. I liked how the game starts off feeling a little slow and then turns into a chaotic race where you’re constantly deciding whether to keep building speed or play it safe. The “spin to win” theme came through really clearly, and chasing faster times made the levels pretty addictive.

My main feedback is that the speed gain could use clearer feedback, maybe with particles, stronger sound, or a visual effect when accelerating. It also took a bit to understand exactly how to build speed, and losing momentum from grass/walls felt a little punishing at times. Some more visual variety between levels would help too. Overall though, really cool movement concept and a fun racing game!

Could've used a little more feedback on gaining speed but overall this was surprisingly fun! What starts out slow and clunky ends as a frantic chaotic race against physics to try and figure out in split second increments whether or not it's worth it to keep gaining speed. A surprising amount of levels too, although they could've definitely been more focused (having the same visual style for every level was a little grating and made things feel a bit samey). Super interesting concept, well done!

I like the mechanics of trying to stay on track while having to intentionally tumble, which pushes the player to take risks to get a faster time. The control feels nicely tuned. Personally, I didn't quite get the trick or the skill to speed up my character that much to beat the best time, but I still had a good time!

Phew, I managed to win all gold stars! Omg that was challenging. Honestly the best game I played in this jam, I had so much fun! Please continue it, I want to play more!

Here are some things I noticed:
A retry button is clearly a must-have (like pressing R for 3 seconds to reset the level).
There is a (bug?), where at some places I could't get speed anymore for a period of time after touching grass/a wall.

If you make it a full game, please take me as a playtester while you are in development!
I would love to help with game design feedback and such ^^

Developer (1 edit)

I’m glad you enjoyed it, for the retries there is pause menu with the Retry option if you press Esc, but i should’ve made a button for it and for going into the grass i made that way to be harder but might have taken it too far

Submitted(+1)

I see, thanks, perhaps you could explain about the pause menu in the tutorial level ?
As for the grass I don't think you "took it too far", its just not logical for the player to be slowed down even after exiting the grass, that's why it felt like a bug, an idea to fix that while keeping the same difficulty would be to add "mud" areas, in which the player is slowed down if he goes into them, just like in grass, but the mud is still on the wheel after, so it take some time to speed up again. Idk, just an idea.

Took me a second to realize how to pick up speed, but I enjoyed it once I did! I think it wouldve been cool to have some particle effects to show when ur accelerating (like drift flames in mario kart)

Submitted

It would be nice for the wheel to be a more contrasting color to the road

Submitted(+1)

The speedup seems to only trigger once you hold one direction for a certain time and then switching to the other. I initially assumed that I would accelerate at all times while spinning (I interpreted the arrows that way) and so it was difficult to get into it. Later on as I gained more of a feeling of the mechanic, I found edges quite punishing as I lost all my built up progress instantly (... then again. I'm bad at racing games in general). Just wanted to give you this perspective, feel free to do with it what you want ^^ I'm really impressed with the thumbnail art btw!

It took me a while to get the hang of the core mechanic, but once I got it i became such a sweat, i kept retrying the lvls bc i wanted to improve my time lol. I like the music, and the retro look aswell :) The core mechanic itself is quite interesting and results in fun gameplay, it feels exciting going faster and faster and nearly like you're on the edge of losing control, but its so satisfying still! Overall a very good game and very fun!

I had fun playing this! Music is awesome, top down approach works and the theme "spin to win" really feels alive here. The audio tracks had some dope basslines. I would like to see a bit more stakes, perhaps a balancing meter so you have to maintain equilibrium or perhaps a higher difficulty?

Developer(+1)

Could be interesting to do that if we come back to this idea

Submitted(+1)

Really cool! I love the style of the visuals and the title screen especially, great choice of tunes and a really interesting movement concept!
