Im not joining the samsara cult, u can't make me
Really fascinating game. The concept and take on the theme are amazing; it 100% could be expanded on. And the art is lovely, although the absence of a walking animation combined with the footstep sounds felt mildly uncanny to me for some reason.
I think the concept however is both this games biggest strength and its downfall. Getting the wrong character at the wrong time is just such a pain, and it feels really terrible if you get a character that you can't really use over and over again. To be honest, I don't really have an answer for how you would fix this though. I feel like taking away the randomness would take away from part of what makes the game unique and makes it thematically interesting (meaning its ideas about reincarnation in this case, not in relation to the jam theme). At the same time, it wouldn't be much of a metroidvania if the world was more navigable by all of the characters.
Anyway, I doubt you want design advice from me. Just some thoughts because this game got me thinking, haha. Overall, this is amazing work. If you do have plans to expand on this, I'd love to check out where you go with it! Really really cool!
hehe I mentioned this in another reply already but you actually do have some control over character selection cause you can stop the wheel by pressing z again! I found this out super late, but it makes a huge difference imo and I wish it was explained in-game so people wouldn't get so frustrated with randomness :(
Thank you for this! I did not notice that at all.
A really great concept for this theme. The only thing it needed was just a text explaining the controls, i spend almost 5 minutes on the name input screen. TvT
overall a really really good game
honestly my favourite use of this theme ive seen so far, amazing concept. the game is so unique and cool and the puzzles were super well made. my ONLY and i mean ONLY issue with this game comes from the nature of the wheel itsself, thematically its perfect but there were points where i had to die many times in a row just to get what i needed to finish a puzzle, i think by sheer misfortune i spent more time doing that than solving the puzzles.
however, that doesnt really take away from the experience its just something noteworthy.
Fire game, chill music which helps the vibes, cool and meaningfull story! just an all round banger, well done!
Very well done! Mood of the game is immaculate.
Sounds about right
Peak shit. Very much a game deserving of high praise. The mechanics are well thought out and all mesh together perfectly, each animal providing their own gameplay feature really makes the entire project land amazingly. The game just throws you into the deep end, but it really works, as the gameplay isn't too complicated as to be unintuitive but is also complicated enough to leave space for an ingenious number of puzzles and secrets to be found. The music is great, absolutely spectacular stuff, and the art fits with the eerie and quiet atmosphere of the project so well I love it. This is 100% one of the best games that I've played in this jam because it just does not miss with anything. Loved it!
Wow... I don't have a lot to say. It was just an amazing experience. Probably in the top 3 games I played this jam. It's so fun and clever.
This was an awesome puzzle game! It really reminded me of Animal Well, but had enough unique qualities to stand on its own. Sometime after the mid-game, I felt like the reincarnation wheel got in the way more than anything (even with the early-end trick). A solution for this could be to have enough puzzles that it wouldn't matter which creature you got, as there's always something to solve (Blue Prince does this well). However, this is a game jam, so obviously that type of scope isn't expected haha. I'm really glad I got to play this, excellent job!!
Cleary a very thought-out game. I am very unnerved by the footsteps for all creatures, although I can understand logically that it is some type of indie option of not taking oneself too seriously.
That aside, the game is a really mysterious and cryptic puzzle platformer. And I’m not good at puzle platformers. Yet this one is really on point. You understand that each creature brings something different to the gameplay and you have to try them out to understand what it is. A frog, a duck, a human and a weird creature that I wish I knew what it was so it would help me think. I’m wondering why the duck doesn’t swim.
I’m currently also stuck.
Very interesting and serious creation.
wow. this genuinely inspired me to want to go finish animal well, to want to go make a metroidvania, so many things. you can 1000% make this a bigger game and call it on par with animal well. i haven't made it to the end yet but plan to later and i've had nothing but fun figuring everything out <3 seriously great work
Wow!!! Favorite of the jam so far. Well done
Profound
So I played this ages ago but just saw I didn't actually rate it for some reason but no worries cuz I'll happily come by play again!
This game is amazing! It's so fun going through it and figuring out how to go places, it's so well put together. I love the artstyle, there's a bunch of little details like plant sprites slightly moving as you walk past them or the little drops falling from the ceiling. Using the wheel to pick a character that each interact with the world not just in unique ways but have all of them be actually required to progress is amazing! The sound is soothing.
I could go on about about it forever, this game is a masterpiece! Well done other Iris!
This game changed my brain chemistry- i actually came to leave a comment but got sidetracked playing instead LMAO
I initially bounced off this game when I tried it several days ago despite loving the style, because I got stuck early on. Now, though, I'm really glad that I circled back to it. The game is off-the-charts in terms of style and charm; the art style, the sound design...everything just kind of fits. Really well done. I love the effect of the rain hitting the top of the water. The sound design is very minimal, but that makes the moments when it swells up all the more impactful. Great atmosphere-building.
The gameplay is quite nice once you figure it out. The platforming didn't feel great to me, and I occasionally ended up in the spikes when I thought I had done everything correctly, but the puzzle/exploration aspect is quite nice; once you know what to look for, there are just enough hints scattered around to guide you in the right direction. I do wish the mole's spots were a touch more distinct visually from the walls around them, but maybe that's just me not being attentive enough.
Also, I had the same concern that seems to be showing up elsewhere in the comments: even though I understand why things are the way they are, I really wanted a version where I could just pick the animal instead of spinning the wheel. This is balanced a little bit because early on you have multiple ways to progress things, so just about any animal is useful; but later on when you really want someone specific, it can be frustrating if you time the wheel incorrectly.
The character abilities felt well-balanced, and things were organized in clever ways such that you needed multiple of those abilities, in the right order, to solve the puzzles. Maybe the duck, shouldn't die immediately when touching water, since ducks can swim? But there's a dedicated quack button, which more makes up for that.
The short length also works in this game's favor. The length feels just right: long enough to get used to how things work and feel that sense of accomplishment, but not long enough for things to get tedious/repetitive.
Again, I'm glad I came back to this one because I really enjoyed it in the end. Great work!
Pretty cool game! I love the puzzle solving idea here but I find the platforming mechanics a bit too heavy on the gravity. The switching between characters are also really cool but I find it frustrating to try to get the character I know I need over and over again/ Though I still had a good time with this one! The visuals are simple but clean and coherent and the audio is also really fitting! I like the tone of the game as well which enforces the seriousness of it! Overall, really good game but I wish I was a bit better at it xD. Awesome work!
really enjoyed my time with this
This was really neat. I liked the atmosphere and the exploration. I did get frustrated not knowing what each animal's abilities were at first, and I wasn't able to completely finish because I got stuck at one jump where I wasn't sure what option I was supposed to use. A few more hints for the other animals besides human in the death messages would have helped me. The spin to pick an animal is cool, but when I had a path that I thought needed a specific animal, then it was frustrating.
This game was really well made but I got stuck at the piano for so long because I couldn't play notes while holding Z and an arrow key until I switched to WASD and Z. this made me discover a thing called keyboard ghosting which is a physical limitation of some keyboards that stops them from registering certain combinations of 3 or more keys being pressed at the same time. so it wasn't your fault at all that the piano didn't work for me but you might want to rework the piano controls so you don't need to press 3 keys at the same time so it doesn't happen to anyone else.
I played until I had revealed three tunes, maybe to be played but since they never indicated in the least that they were that nor what order, if there was an order, i actually quit when reaching the third.
I like the idea of the structure, having different characters that have different abilities, but after a while i did not enjoy having to spin for them. I had also not read the entire game page / missed you could stop the wheel… so having to walk a screen or two to kill the character and then, at other times the near absurd jump and movement speeds leading to some untimely deaths, it got quite frustrating. Having a way to kill all characters on the start screen could have helped a lot.
I was also very surprised that the barely submerged platforms that would only bathe the toes of the characters could harm them. This felt like break against the expectations of the world.
I would also very much have liked if the things that the characters could interact with had any anchoring in the world. I do like that their movement differences made sense with who they were, but the abilities felt completely random which meant I couldn’t encounter a thing and think “maybe the duck would be good at this.” Instead it was brute force to learn who did what.
So I think if there was more world-building and a bit better UX, that I would have had a blast playing this.
