What would it take for people to start making games on elves?

I have always been a big fan of elves since my early days of gaming, there is so much I love about them and I like to find games, comics, books or more where they play a role. But I could never find a single indie game on elves, we get thousands on dwarves, vampires, orcs and even goblins. But in 12 years of gaming I never saw a single video game centered on elves and trust me I looked everywhere. It's clear nobody is willing to make an elven game, but is there anything elves fans could do to change that? For me the fact there is no competition at all if someone made an elven game, it would be the only on the market even today and the fact elves are insanely popular in every games or even medias they appear in, these two things or even one of them should have given us at least a few games on elves, yet nobody dared to try anything at all. I don't know if things are going to stay like that forever and even in 2050 nobody will have made a single game on elves, maybe elves fans like me will have to make AI games for ourselves since there won't be anything for us made by humans which is a very sad prospect. I don't even know what to say anymore about all that.

What are your critera for elven games and how did you search for them?

everything you listed on itch.io are not games at all, what i have been looking for is a game fully centered on elves, on any genre, vampires dwarves and orcs have hundreds of games on them but elves not a single one

Elves are ubiquitous in the fantasy genre. Including games from Elven perspective and being set in an Elven society. If you can't find any, and will not accept games on Itch as games, no one will be able to help you.

Go play Morrowind. It is fully centered on an Island full of Elves. But you will probably not accept this as a game either. Or claim those ain't Elves. Or that it is not centered on Elves, since they do ordinary things, any human might do.

morrowind is 24 years old, dwarves, vampires and goblins got dozens of games focused on them this year and last year, elves not a single one. The fact you could only find a 24 years old game for elves and nothing elves shows they truly have nothing at all

Unfortunately, you did not answer my question how you searched or what your criteria are. Also you rejected games on Itch and search engine results.

So your criteria seems to be: a game from 2025 or 2026, not on Itch plus whatever you think "centered" means.

You claim there were dozens of such new Goblin games. Care to name a few? I am saturated with seeing elves everywhere, which might hint why new games on elves are "rare". But playing as a Goblin is still a novelty.

You can add any character, for example an elf, to Simple Times! Edit the file Horses.png in the "Common" folder. Increase the image height by 96 pixels to hold your new character.

It depends on what type of game you're looking for. I'ved played many games with elves in the casual market.

I also wrote one - where the main character is an elf, and she lives in a village of elves - some of the customers are elves. But its tags would centre on what the game is which is a casual game in a fantasy setting. I haven't used the tag elf because it didn't occur to me at the time to use such a tag.

Oh, but your game will not be accepted, since it is on Itch. If that fails, it will not be accepted because your elf looks more like a fairy. And if that fails, it will not be accepted because it is not centered enough.

And you are right about the tags. Such tags are not popular. People rather tag fantasy than elves.

What’s the point of that reply? OP can decide for themselves if they want to accept the game or not. If you think that OP is being too unspecific about what they ask for and too picky about what they accept, I agree - but either address OP directly or butt out of the conversation. Hassling third parties because they engage with OP is just harassment.

Curiously, your game was not rejected out of hand. Your main character seems to be some sort of flower fairy, like Tinkerbelle. She's mushroom sized on the cover of the game. I was under the impression that OP searched for Tolkien influenced elves. Pointy ears, tall, slender and all that.

I don't live in a country where elves or fairies are part of folklore - that leaves us free to imagine them any way we like. I'd assume the game would not qualify because of the type of game - aimed at girls - rather than other game developers - but oddly enough I didn't see the size of the character as an issue.

Fay. Elfay. Elv. It is the same word and what people think those mythical creatures are, varies a lot. Though I guess, most know them from movies and games.

Mentioning orcs, golbins and dwarves indicated to me, it's about the standard fantasy trope of elves, popularized by Lord of the Rings and later games like Dungeons & Dragons.

If this thread is about flower sized mythical creatures, that would explain a lot. There are not many games about them.

Yes, because I made the game first person: the player is playing as the elf, Trinkette.

However, she is the main character that the story revolves around and she's in every story segment - talking to something or someone.

I didn't put many of the story scenes in the screenshots, so I can see how you could get that impression.

It's a story rich game - you slowly get to know her through the story - or as much of her as she is willing to reveal. I was going to make it into a series, where you learn more about her as the series goes on but the game got so little traction I never bothered releasing Episode 2.

Not that it’ll be of any help to you, but because I want to make games about elves, I feel like answering the title question.

What would it take? Money to reduce basic life stressors and time to either learn how to make the planned games or to hire creators to help. A potential audience interested in the game to keep up morale. (Knowing I’m the only person my games to date are really for is sucky sometimes.) I’d also need a place to live where the games won’t put me and mine in danger for publishing and promoting the work, because the less established the themes and visual tropes are, the more dangerous it is where I am now.

FWIW, I am working on an elf-themed narrative game with multiple point-and-click challenges for a simple quest.

There’s another much bigger game that’s similar, featuring elves at the edge of a human realm as they attempt to reclaim the land, but it’s a background project developing over years. Honestly, I would be surprised if I’m not only able to finish it but release it while I’m still alive.

I have seen elf games online that might not be to your taste that are available, but they’ve been marginalized to the extent that it’s hard to get copies.

For the non-indie games, there are the classics like Zelda and RPGs.

i'm so so glad to hear you are the only one giving elves in gaming a chance, trust me that you will please a lot of people and be rewarded for daring to do what no one else did before, don't hesitate to ask around and promote the elves in your game. I wish you all the best of success
