I'm really getting tired of dwarves in gaming

I have been in the gaming space for more than a decade and this has always been a constant problem for me. I never was a big fan of dwarves as I find them pretty blank and boring,  I often thought the things people praise them for must be jokes, not to mention they are always the same thing. I never understood why so many people chose dwarves, even when it didn't make sense. Ten years ago I just shrugged off those games and watched most of them fail, I didn't mind them and played what I like but quickly as the years went on it became absurd, constantly more and more games on dwarves, always the same thing, the same themes, the games looking like each other,... People are obsessed with dwarves and try to put them into everything for no reason and end up failing because of course people want new and fresh stuff, not to mention that if you only have dwarves in your games you only appeal to a certain public.

And even now we are getting drowned in a sea of dwarven games as people try out anything they can with dwarves and try out every possible name, the obsession is becoming absurd and the weird thing is that game devs don't see most people are tired of it, i'm starting to see a lot of people complain about this online, but mostly all those games are failing or get ignored period and yet game devs continue down the same path.

I have no words for it at this point, even years ago it was getting out of hand, I mean how many games on dwarves did we already get this year alone? There are plenty of other fantasy races, elves for example have been absent from the gaming industry with no games on them from as far as i can remember, today in 2026 the situation is the same as it was a decade ago, I even see desperate elf fans like myself looking and asking everywhere for just ONE game on our favorite race but it seems people are too obsessed with making clone games on dwarves tyo listen...

I don't even know if this will end one day, it's a bit like Vampires who have constantly been extremely popular since forever and the hype is not dying out, even almost all games made on dwarves failing spectacularly isn't sending a clear message that most people don't enjoy this anymore, which makes sense as dwarven themes are pretty limited so you see everything you can see pretty fast and there is no point buying and playing hundreds of games on dwarves.

Anyway sorry for the rant but I had to talk about this even if not much will ever change I fear.

This does beg the question of why dwarves are such a popular choice. Is it because they're a very familiar character archetype so devs don't need to waste time explaining the characters to the player? Is there something about dwarves that make them easier to build a game around? Do players just like playing stocky bearded men with oversized weapons?

Either way, this is the type of discussion I like seeing in these forums ദ്ദി・ᴗ・)✧

i'd say it's because it's easier and cheaper to make games on dwarves, you can just use simple overused design and do the same thing everyone else is doing without having to think too much about it. Also since dwarf fans are extremely loud they give the impression tons of people want games on dwarves but as we can see with most games on dwarves failing this is not the case at all. I think the dwarf fatigue took too long arrive but better late than never. It's going to be weird in the years to come seeing everyone making games on dwarves that nobody will buy, the situation right now already looks like people hitting their heads against a wall. But for me making a game on dwarf is a sign of going the easy way instead of trying something fresh and daring.

Reminds me of this

/t/6389374/what-would-it-take-for-people-to-start-making-games-on...

I mean how many games on dwarves did we already get this year alone? There are plenty of other fantasy races, elves for example have been absent from the gaming industry with no games on them from as far as i can remember

Yes? How many were there? I count about 5 or more games this year on Steam with Elf or Elven in the title. And about 9 with Dwarves.

I have nothing against a good rant. But please keep your exaggerations in the realm of believeable and facts.

Do not like dwarves. Fine. But do not claim the other fantasy creatures do not get their share of games revolving around them.

And you got it backwards. People are not fixated on dwarves. They are saturated with elves. They are everywhere. Hence games with dwarves.

But does anyone think about the halflings? Not a single one in 2026 and 2025. And the one from 2024 was a farming simulation.

i'm not counting porn games, and i'm pretty sure this is all you found. Also nine games on dwarves this year who barely started is astronomical, if you pretend this is a small number it's because you may be used to dwarves getting so much all the time. i'd like to see those games centered on elves that are not porn, I never found any in years.

And yes people are obsessed with dwarves to a ridiculous degree, they keep making blank games on them even if they are all the same  and also gamers don't want those games anymore and don't purchase them.

I'd also like to see you explain this absurd lie that elves would be anywhere, i know elf haters are saturated when they see any random elf in a game, but put yourself in the shoes of someone who like elves and you'll see we have nothing, nobody could possibly be saturated with elves if they did not hate them a lot for some reason

i'm not counting porn games

I counted on Steam with sorting by publishing date, without any porn games, and only by title search. A game without dwarf or elv in the title, but with those creatures would not have been counted. Stasistically, it is a bad approach, but it proves that games about the topic are made and in turn is disproving your statements.

and i'm pretty sure this is all you found.

And I am pretty sure, you are trolling.

elves for example have been absent from the gaming industry with no games on them from as far as i can remember

Most games have dwarves and elves in them, if they are of the fantasy genre.

what games are those, can you show me?

(+1)

I do not know to which games you are referring to.

Games where you can chose to play as a dwarf or elf? Bascially all games where you can customize your character in a fantasy setting. If there is more than human as a choice, you can select elves, dwarves and often other exotic types. And if the world has dwarves, it is rather bound to also have elves. They represent a trope of opposing extremes. Woodland dwellers, slender and noble vs. underground dwellers, stout and grumpy. Also very popular is the half-elf. But no half-dwarves are known to me.

But here you go. The Dragon Age games. Anything even remotely connected to Dungeons & Dragons, like Baldur's Gate 3. Any Elder Scrolls game. Any Warhammer game will have elves, dwarves or both, but not necessarily as a playable character, like you can play 5 different characters in Vermintide, one is an Elf and one is a Dwarf. But the game is not about elves. Or about dwarves.

A more obscure game would be something like Thea2. You can have Elves as your playable hero and followers. And that game is not even connected to the Tolkien influenced Elf lore, but to eastern europe myhts. It's just that Elves are ubiquitous in the fantasy genre - just like dwarves.

But those games are usually not about a society or play in a society of a made up people. Being an elf, or a human, is often just an informed quality of the player avatar and maybe some flavor in some situations or a bonus to player stats. Oh, and yeah, Elves are very powerful in that Thea game.

And because Elves are so ubiquitous, your statements about not remembering any Elves in the gaming industry for as long as you can remember is so ludicrous. But I forgot, you said games on them. Whatever that means.

You do not even specify the type of game. There is a bit of a difference between Vermintide, Baldurs Gate, Thea 2 and some fantasy visual novel playing in an elven forest.

i'm talking about indie games centered fully on elves, you have so many of those on dwarves, vampires, goblins,... But name me one game fully centered on elves

Name me games fully centered on dwarves. Not dwarves as the heros, but about being dwarven in a dwarven society. Not a mining simulator that used dwarves for fluff.

there are hundreds, you can easily find these yourself. However i'd like you to find what i asked of you because I am certain you won't be able to do it

If there are hundreds, where is the problem to name a few?

The point I am trying to make, and that you avoid is this: you will not see games with a non human living in that non human society a lot.

What you usually have is, having a non human venturing out and have adventures outside of that non human society. So expecting a game "fully" "centered on" <species> is a very high hurdle.

I was curious, if all the dwarven games you complain about can take that hurdle you demand of elven games.

i highly doubt you didn't see all of those, i constantly see tons of dwarven games without ever looking out for them. Well the games on dwarves are usually simple and easy games about mining or things like that, I think they chose dwarves out of ease so they are not going to create whole societies or cultures for their games, but usually those games are fully centered on dwarves with no other  races

It occured to me, that this is a lot easier.

Just search steam for elves, or dwarves.

elves has over 900 results

dwarves has over 700 results

even trolls has over 600 results

goblins has over 1400 results. guess because they are ofthen the enemies.

(and you cannot search for halfing, because it spits out results for half life and similar)

porn trash doesnt count, remove that and elves have nothing at all

I already told you that my Steam search excluded the adult games.

It's about 20 for the elves search term. And about 10 for the dwarves. I honestly expected there to be more dwarven action, they would be perfect for a certain genre.

You can have your opinion about dwarves, but making up things and claiming untrue things will not help your cause. To the contrary. You are seen as a troll.

(+1)

Think about goblins !

they too are getting tons of games, but elves nothing

You're right, they are tons of them too.

If you want more elves, make a games about them. Or add elves to my game Simple Times. The game page describes a customization capability.

But gobgobs are considered evil, whereas Dwarves have... personality issues.

I think it's less that people are obsessed with dwarves and more that developers see them as a safe, recognizable fantasy theme. A lot of those games are really about mining, crafting, survival, or colony management, and dwarves just happen to fit that formula well. I'd definitely welcome more games centered around elves or other fantasy races too, but I'd rather see developers make something genuinely unique than just swap dwarves for elves without changing the gameplay.

Elves are boring. They are the Mary Sue of fantasy creatures. Creating an interesting game about Elves is hard. Merely using an elven protagonist is a lot easier.

And yeah, it would not fit the image of elves to colonize, clear woods, mine resources and all that. They are also not known to multiply easily, so colonization is really not a thing they would be fitting.

elves are actually extremely interesting if you take the time to learn about them, but dwarves are very boring and pretty much the same anywhere, once you see one group of dwarf you know them all already. You could definitely make city builders on elves, after all in most universes they appear in they do have vast cities

You cannot learn about them, because they are made up. In each game you would only learn about the specific made up version of them. Or about the cliches and tropes the developer used. Our elves are different.

after all in most universes they appear in they do have vast cities

What universes would that be? Because the standard fantasy trope of an elf is the Tolkien elf. And those are very few people in numbers compared to humans and they live in the woods. They specifically do not build vast cities. So where do you get that notion of vast elven cities?

Having city builder elves would be a trope subversion. Just like woodland dwarves.

i prefer to have rich and diverse elven cutures rather than the same blank dwarven thing they c/c everywhere, and yes elves in many universes have a vast and rich lore you can spend hours reading about.

Elves in Elder scrolls, warhammer, warcraft, DnD, the dragon prince, Eragon, Shannara Chronicles and even in LOTR during the first and second age live in huge and beautiful cities

so they use dwarves because it's easier, but at the end of the day all those games end up looking pretty similar and nobody is daring or trying new things anymore. The essence of indie games should be about people trying new things, taking risks and since elves are a bit harder to make games around than dwarves they should be a much better choice, also the result would be interesting and fresh games

(+1)

You think dwarves are the most over-repesentated race in games? But what about humans?

On a serious note i think its because the digging gameplay mechanic (often with gold and monsters) is more suited for games than peacefully growing trees.

Dwarves are popular because of Dwarf Fortress, which was popular enough to create a wave of followers. These followers are basically Dwarf Fortress fan games that don’t even try to hide it by using some other fantasy race than dwarves. If it had been called Troll Fortress or Orc Fortress or Goblin fortress, we would now be seeing waves of troll or orc or goblin games. You wouldn’t even need to change the mechanics, because colonizing and mining are things that trolls and orcs and goblins often do in standard fantasy settings.

Also, Tolkien’s elves were very much city dwellers during the First and Second Ages. The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy take place near the end of the Third Age when most of the elves had already left for the Blessed Realm, leaving just a few token settlements on Middle-Earth.

I didn't like that game at all and it's a shame it's also responsible for drowing the game industry in dwarven games

Also, Tolkien’s elves were very much city dwellers during the First and Second Ages.

And they did not have pointy ears. Yet here we are, elves being tree loving, long haired, pointy eared, long living, tall, arrogant magic users with keen senses and high skills. That's the image someone gets, if you blandly tell them, your fantasy story will have elves.

Them being regular city dwellers like boring old humans breaks with the stereotype. And it breaks with the source material used for creating elves. It is humans that live in cities. All the non humans, the mythical creatures live elsewhere. Usually in the woods or mystical lands. Some underground. Swamps or even the sea. But not regular cities.

Sure, you can create a world, where humans, orks, elves, dwarves, goblins, halfings, lizards, fishpeople and whatnot all live in overground cities made of brick houses. But it kinda defeats the purpose a bit, of having all these different creatures in a setting. So instead you have dwarves building underground, elves growing treehouses, fishpeople carving corrals, halfings dig burrows and whatever gobos do.

(Interestingly enough, Tolkien's elves and humans were the same species. Elves just got the fate of living long and becoming graceful over time in a simplified explanation. So in ancient times Tolkien's humans and elves would do probably all the same things, like building cities.)

people get a very simple image of elves, this doesnt mean there isn't a lot more to elves than they know, also elven cities do look quite different from human cities, take Silvermoon, or even Teldrassil, villages on a giant world tree. You also have the elves in dragon age who lived in cities that were built with materials but also magic. There is a lot of potential for city builders with elves

It is humans that live in cities. All the non humans, the mythical creatures live elsewhere.

Most Dungeon and Dragons campaign worlds that have elves and cities have elven cities. Warhammer has elven cities. Even Dragon Age had elven cities before the humans destroyed them. I’m having trouble thinking of any mainstream fantasy examples of elves who don’t and never have lived in cities. Maybe some tiny jrpgs where there a handful of cities on the entire world map. And dwarves stereotypically live in cities - it’s only in settings that deliberately go against the standard fantasy conventions that they don’t.

Elven cities typically don’t look like human cities, but have their own architectural style which may or may not involve tree houses. They’re still cities.

nd it breaks with the source material used for creating elves. It is humans that live in cities. All the non humans, the mythical creatures live elsewhere. ... not (in) regular cities

Human mythology about non-human creatures that are not animals, does not talk about them having regular cities in the human style.

Not even all human societies build cities for that matter. Smaller dwellings are not cities. And nomads do not have those either.

If you consider a non-human intelligent species with similar traits, for a story, you might of course project some human behaviour onto them. Including building and living in cities.

But the current cliche for a standard "Elf" is to live in the woods, in harmony with the woods. Maybe growing the trees to form a natural house. The favored weapon is a bow and the culture would be the guardians of the forest.

If you have desert dwelling creatures, that mine the hills for gold, and you call them elves, that will be asking for a lot of backstory, how they ended up there. Using the word "elf" invokes the known stereotypes and expectations in the reader/viewer/player. And the trope of elf, given no other information, will invoke things like wood dweller and guardian, agile, noble, long life span and even pointy ears. It does not invoke: lives in cities, just like humans do.

If you create a world where they do, it's a case of: that's how our elves live. They are different. Look. We made something original, but did not bother to come up with a name for these non-humans, that almost look like humans.

(1 edit)

Human mythology about non-human creatures that are not animals, does not talk about them having regular cities in the human style.

Human mythology usually talks very little about how non-humans live, but even so it’s not that hard to find counter-examples. Amaravati for one. Also many ruined cities were once believed by the locals to have been built and inhabited by non-humans.

But we’re talking about fantasy elves, which have evolved to have their own set of tropes separate from their Norse mythology origin. And elven cities are one of those tropes, one that was there from Tolkien’s time and has been used almost universally ever since.

Not even all human societies build cities for that matter. Smaller dwellings are not cities. And nomads do not have those either.

Yes, and fantasy elves are almost never portrayed as similar to those human societies. Elves are not country bumpkins, that’s more of a halfling trope. They are not barbarians, that’s more of an orc trope. They are often the most “civilized” race in the setting, a model for what human society should be (in the eyes of the author). Which can mean being “closer to nature” in some sense, but in a civilized way that does not preclude building cities.

Human mythology usually talks very little about how non-humans live

Exactly! It is more about how they interact with us. Like swapping children for changelings or living under your house. Sitting on your chest while you are trying to sleep. Leading travellers astray in the woods. Whatever. They usually get the blame for something. Or explain strange things that happen.

Elfs in particular are stated to be small and mischievous, playing pranks and being cruel to humans. I would nowadays call those creatures pixies or at least fairies, because of the prevalence of Tolkien inspired elfs capturing the word.

They are not barbarians, that’s more of an orc trope. They are often the most “civilized” race in the setting

Yes. So much civilized that they gave up on "civilisation" and returned to nature to live in harmony with it. At least the wiki on generic elves does mention this notion whose key traits are being friendly with nature and animals.

I do not know exactly how and where it was popularized. Seems a bit like the pointy ears. Those got longer and longer over time, so now Elves have very long pointy ears, so people know they are elves.

So, just like people think of a generic barbarian, if you say "orc", people will think of a generic woodlands ranger and assume a wood-elf, if you say "elf". Unless of course you prepare the setting.

Are dwarves the new brown pixel art?

Search for "elf" on Itch reveals 903 games

"Dwarf" gives 846 :P

there are no games on elves just some very very basic assets, dwarves have hundreds of full games

Sigh. Quit it with the blatant untrue claims.

"elf"

Games 904

Game assets 227

"dwarf"

Games 846

Game assets 140

you should take a look at what you find with those results and you will understand my point. Also you are not an elf fan and all you want is to end this discussion, you don't care if elves are forgotten

That's actually literal title search. But I guess we can assume, if a game has dwarf or elf in the title, that creature probably will appear in the game.

But it does not catch most games that do not have it literally in the title or use a spelling too different.

Interestingly, there is no popular tag for elves or dwarves on Itch. Surprisingly Steam does have those, but I do not know how often they are used. I would not tag dwarves nor elves in a fantasy game. Dwarves have 380 games actually tagged with it. Elves only 170.  And both of those include dlcs. And a game like Baldurs Gate that features Elves is not tagged Elves, nor Dwarves (but someone tagged a dlc for the game with both).

if you take into account all elves games on steam are porn you can see how dwarves have a huge amount of content, and it's understandable people are tired of always seeing the same thing

I totally get where you’re coming from. It’s frustrating to see the industry stuck in a loop of ‘Drunken Dwarf’ tropes while other rich fantasy archetypes, especially Elves, are pushed to the background or treated as mere side characters. 10 years of the same aesthetic—beards, axes, and underground mines—can definitely lead to burnout. The irony is that while devs think they are playing it safe with a 'proven' race, they are actually alienating a huge chunk of players who are craving the grace, magic, and unique storytelling that an Elf-centric game could provide. We’re definitely overdue for a high-budget, immersive Elven RPG

i agree, not to mention people are already tired of this childish and boring trope, all the games on dwarves I see fail badly and nobody plays them. it's also quite stupid to make a game on dwarves when you see all the competition out there, it would be much safer to try something on elves, you would not only have zero competition but please so many people. And yes we do need massive elf centered games not just small ones

Admit it Roma, you created the account marry_jane just to agree with yourself. Or are we to believe that someone organically created their account and posted for the first time and just happened to be in this thread and coincidentally mentioned elves which you already mentioned several times?

Go make an elf game already lol

yes that could clearly happen, but if you want to believe your fiction with no proofs at all go ahead
