7-Challenge Pool Game (Browser/Easy to play): Looking for feedback on progression balance

Hi everyone!

i just released an easy-to-play browser pool table game on itch.io and i'm looking for playtesters to dive into it and give me some constructive

feed back. You can play it instantly right in your broswer.

 About the game:

The game features 7 distinct, challenging stages. To help you overcome them, you can unlock upgraded cue sticks that make the gameplay

easier as you progress.

Link to play:https://bren123.itch.io/bren8ball

What i need feedback on:

Because this is a substantial game with real depth, i really need outside perspectives on how the pacing feels:

1. The Difficulty Curve: How do you feel about the difficulty of the 7 challenges? Do they feel rewarding to figure out?

2. The Progression System: When you unlock a new cue stick, does the drop in difficutly feel like a satisfying reward for your effort, or does it make the remaining challenges too easy?

3. Controls and Physics: Does the aimming, power control, and ball physics feel accurate, smooth, and fun over a longer play sessions?

Please feel free to take your time with it, if you leave a link to your own project in comments, I would be happy to return the favour and test your game as well!

Thank you so much for your time and feedback!

Ok, so the general physics feels good and its a very solid base, the one issue that needs to be fixed is that the line that comes out of the yellow ball that tells you what direction it will go only appears sometimes, for some balls. This makes shots without that line super difficult. If you get that fixed I would be more than willing to play it some more if you give me feedback on my game.  https://mercstudios.com/play/startalon332

thats the point, you unlock cues and it gets easier that is the fix lol

+1 to the confusion of the line only sometimes coming out of the yellow ball. I didn't realise it was intended to be that way until I came to the comments. I found the game had a lag spike whenever a ball exploded too.

Hi Bren123, I've just had a go at your game. I agree with mercstudios, the general physics feels good. I guess the small line they talked about only appears when the white ball is very close to a yellow ball. It's fine by me in principles, but when talking about the difficulty it maybe something to have systematically for beginners otherwise the game is rather hard. On my first 2 goes, I couldn't pot all the balls in beginner level, so I didn't check the challenges as I felt if I couldn't even do that, I would probably be unable to achieve a challenge. I liked the sound effects of the balls and hits. I have a few remarks for the layout/navigation:

- One frustrating thing that happened is that my game disappeared because I accidentally clicked on one of the challenges button and without any warning it quit my game and asked about going into the challenge. (I played with a finger pad) There definitely should be a pop-up asking if you really want to quit the current game... but I'm not even sure that having the challenges displayed and clickable there during a game is the best option. If you're playing a game, you're not going to suddenly start a challenge. Maybe you could have a menu to have a choice of playing "standard game" with difficulty levels, or try a challenge, and then, while playing, the challenge number or the type of game is displayed. I think I'd give the navigation layout another thought.

- It might be a "pool" key word I don't know, but seeing "English" on top of the white ball on the right-hand corner is strange if it is about the language of the game, especially when not clickable. If not localized, you can remove it, it's obvious what language is used. If you can change the language, have an option screen to do so. At the top of the white ball, you could put "effects" or something like that.

- Personally I would like to have a help or instruction page somewhere as it took a few tries to know my way round.

I'd play again and try to pot at least all the balls in beginner level.

Don't hesitate to give me some feedback about Bouncenoid, https://jerkyhips.itch.io/bouncenoid, my twisted/reversed brick-breaker game inspired by the 80s pixel-art arcade games.

you are right about accidentally clicking a button, its got a restart button,  and totally disagree with english idea lol, i dont think you did first challenge at all lol, you just post on peoples feed as a trick to get them to do your feed in return lol

Hi Bren123, you got me wrong. First of all I think it's great not to agree all the time otherwise we would be making the same game, which would be boring. Then, I honestly didn't realize the challenges were mandatory: basically I was trying to pot all the balls before running out of lives and I couldn't do it. So I didn't look at the challenges to start with. Many games have a default gameplay you try to master and then trophies you can unlock, that's how I assumed (wrongly) that your game would work. You can think this is stupid, but that's how I approached your game with no hidden agenda contrary to what you think. I actually played your game twice, found a kind of usability issue and took the time to write a post... That's much more than you did with my game since it seems you didn't play it. So who is actually not playing fair here? 😅 When I get a chance I'll look into the challenges, maybe the first ones are easier than potting all the balls with 7 lives.

(1 edit)

you have proved my point its not about me not willing to take peoples points of views at all its noticing people who don't play it, even looking at old comments and copying them for a excuse for them to leave feed on they own game lol, when you say play your game do you mean look at comments and pretend i played it then give feed back (your  style) lol?

It's crazy how you can be convinced of your own delusion and not believe I played your game. Do you have log files? In any case I don't need to pretend to play games, I don't have this kind of time to waste. I have joined the community recently and started playing people's games fairly but I guess like any community you can't escape trolls comments & reactions. Shame man. I play games because it's fun and I 'm happy to take part of the game dev community.

Other people will see these messages and wondered if it's worth trying your game if then the dev will tell them they're lying.

i dont need to be convinced that you played a bit you proved it by what you said, and even if it wasn't a case of you going around leaving comments so you get feed back on ur game, which we both know that what you do :P i would try first level then give you feed back lol

I played on Beginner, and overall I thought the physics and sound effects felt really good.

The main thing I struggled with was aiming the cue. Rotating it with the mouse felt a little difficult to control precisely. I also tried using the keyboard, and I wonder if it might feel better if the normal rotation speed were faster, while holding Ctrl slowed it down for fine adjustments. Another possibility might be to automatically slow the rotation when the aiming line is close to or touching a ball.

I also found it difficult to judge the right amount of power. I got a little better at it after playing for a while, but I often hit the ball much harder than I expected. For Beginner mode, maybe you could display a suggested power level that would roughly reach the target ball. It could work as a reference rather than an automatic solution.

One other thing: even on Beginner, having to pot more than 10 balls made the first goal feel quite far away. What if the first Beginner challenge only required something like 3 balls to clear? I think getting an early clear could feel rewarding and make players more eager to move on to the next challenge.

Those were my impressions from Beginner mode. I enjoyed the basic feel of the physics a lot!

people who dont like pool games wouldnt play it, it gets easier when you unlock cues, keyboard is only for fine tuning the aim, its a skilled game i only get feed back from people who try the 1st challenge lol, and i dont like the idea of telling you how far power takes cueball at all, whats next showing you exactly where the ball will go lol
