The graphics are really polished.

And it is pretty fun if I get the audio to work and also the jump control to work.

Really adore the acrade approach of the theme.

Edit: managed to get the audio to work but I dunno how to jump.

Hey thanks for playing! You can jump using w or up on keyboard or also x/square on XBox or PlayStation controllers respectively. If you want to rebind controls or flip the left/right rotation direction you can do so in the settings menu either on the home screen or in game using ESC.

I dont see the plane jump when I press W so I may be missing something

ooh I see, you have to collect the powerup. Every time you kill 5 enemies a powerup spawns that you can collect and the first one is always the jump powerup. We did this to try an keep the gameplay true to the original tempest arcade games which also have the jump as a collectable powerup

Oh man I really enjoyed this! Some of these commenters need to hit the arcade; I don't think they've played Tempest before! 😜

This plays really well and feels so solid. Not the most original entry ever but the polish absolutely sets it off. It's like you gave tempest the geometry wars treatment, there's so much style and game feel it really breathes fresh air into a classic. Well done!

Thank you for your kind words! Yeah if you've played tempest before, especially with the arcade spin controller, you probably have a good intuition for moving the ship. Without that, I can see it taking a bit of getting used to. We tried to add some originality with the bowling level, we actually had a bunch of other wacky ideas we wanted to add but ran out of time unfortunately. Thanks for playing!

What a game, i kinda wish i didnt have to reset from the start losing my power ups. I believe you should try the same approach as we did in our game with a leaderboard, for this type of retro games. Amazing job.

Yeah I just recently learned about Talo and Silent Wolf a few days ago haha, so I might take a look at those if I do an arcade-y thing in the future. Thanks for your kind words and for playing!

The different shapes make for a really cool arcade game style, though the movement was a little hard to wrap my brain around. The invert option definitely helped.

Never played Tempest, but will have to check it out if I see a machine somewhere! Good job

this feels like it has a cohesive thing going. It reminds me of arcade games from the 2000s. I liked that it added a layer of confusion, and I was definitely tripped up by the different shapes that I had to navigate lol. I think depth perception and seeing the lines clearly is important for this one, and my eyesight is kinda bad lol. I had a lot of fun playing!

Fantastic vibes (it was like playing a screensaver or somethin), clever central mechanic, and satisfying powerups. The game was frustrating at points, but I think it was in the good way that motivates you to overcome the challenge and (mostly) not the bad way. Awesome job. Fuck the farfalle starship swarms.

The only minor criticism I have is that your ability to handle the later levels seems to depend a lot on how quickly you're able to get the jump powerup. Considering how fundamental it is to the gameplay, I'd suggest making it available from the beginning but maybe putting it on a cooldown or giving it charges or something. That way I still have to be judicious with it, but I'm not totally fucked if the enemies swarm me before I have a chance to grab it (and sometimes the powerup comes in a lane that's already swarmed to hell, so there's little hope of getting it). I also wasn't sure which of the projectiles WAS the powerup at first, so it took some testing and dying before I realized it.

Really excellent entry. Nice work!

Hi thanks for playing, glad you liked it! In regards to the jump, we were trying to remain as true as possible to the earlier tempest games  which also have the jump as a collectable powerup, but believe it or not it's even worse in those games because the powerups are randomized. I set it up so that you only have to kill 5 enemies for the powerup to spawn and you ALWAYS get the jump first because, as you pointed out, it's a crucial defensive maneuver. So I tried to un-fuck it as much as possible while staying true to the source haha

Also Farfalle XD

That's a cool game. Like how the visuals transforms as we rotate. Always good to see a space blaster game.

Very fun game! Great visuals that fit the theme, music and original mechanics. The orange enemies were super annoying, especially once they grab on to the edge and you can’t shoot them anymore.

Developer

Thank you :D For the edge stalking enemies, the jump power up helps!

Very cool! Captured the retro arcade feel very well but with some nice flourishes in the graphics that give it a modern touch.

Thanks, we tried really hard to keep the retro design of the old arcade tube shooters, glad you enjoyed it!

weird…

technically competent, but not that fun - for me at least >.<

There didn’t seem to be any counter to enemies that already reached the top. And controls were fairly unintuitive. Best I could do was hold space to spam shoot while circling

(+1)

Hey thanks for your feedback, yeah unfortunately people don't have the old spin stick controllers readily available anymore, so the controls can take a bit of getting used to. There is a quick toggle control in the settings that will flip the left/right direction rotations that might help a bit in that regard. The best way to counter the enemies at the top is to collect the jump powerup, its always the first one that you can pick up. You can also dodge around them while they're flipping and hit them with a well timed shot, but this is a lot more tricky

Wow what an amazing and original game. Best score 17.3k. The music is absolutely amazing especially when it changes in 2nd level.

The death animation is annoying. It takes too long, I want to get back to gameplay more quickly.

Great job overall!

Submitted(+2)

This is amazing! I really like the vibe of this. The aesthetics ... and this music. Love it.

I played for so long ... couldn't stop =)

Struggled a bit with the direction of the movement when "up side down", but that's on me.

Great game jam entry you have here!

Btw. I couldn't open the credits page. A bug?

Developer(+1)

Yep, we just didn't get to implementing the credits in time. Thanks so much for trying it out, it's lovely to hear this feedback!

For the movement direction, you're exactly right — since its clockwise/anti-clockwise, upside down levels are backwards to the controls.  There is a settings to invert the controls in the ESC menu in-game if its too annoying!

Submitted(+2)

I feel like you totally nailed the retro aesthetic! the graphics were awesome and I loved how the level reacted to the player's movement. Great job!

Submitted(+1)

I love these kinds of games! You did a great job capturing that retro feel for sure. There were some issues with the controls I think, unless I just get disoriented playing. But overall, looks great and took me back!

Submitted(+2)

Very nice polish on the graphics (including the background) and the music - also very clean action, nice and responsive. I only wish you could have a controller like the old arcade machines with the spinning knob control... I often got confused and moved clockwise instead of counterclockwise because my brain was used to left-right controls rather than clockwise-counterclockwise controls.

Submitted(+1)

Loved the concept! However, the options and credit don't seem to be fully working. The controls got inverted at some point, meaning during the triangle level, [<-] moved you right and [->] moved you left. The visual polish and clear indication when you got hit was nice.

Developer

Thanks for playing and for reporting those bugs. Here's a work around for the settings screen bug: if you access the menu in-game (press esc) it should work! There's a setting there that helps the "inverted control" problem.

The game always moves clockwise/anti clockwise, like the original tempest arcade game, but depending on the level (especially the tent shape one) this means that left goes right, right goes left.

Submitted(+1)

Ah I see! A input quirk to keep then, if you're going for the authentic experience.
