I've always wondered why so many Discord servers don't allow members to promote their own games or projects.

Personally, I don't mind it. If someone has built something they're proud of, I'd be happy for them to share it with the community. I don't believe that allowing other games to be promoted necessarily hurts my own game—in fact, it could help create a more supportive and collaborative community.

On the other hand, I understand that some server owners may want to keep their communities focused on a single game or avoid spam.

So I'm curious... what do you think?

Fortunately for me, I've joined discord servers which do allow game promotion. They are non-game specific servers BTW.

Although I vote for yes, I'd give these rules to promoters :

1. Provide decent info about the game, some screenshots and videos.

2. Don't post and run! interact with other server members and even better, try other member's promoted game.

Servers that focus on more general topics (visual novel, shmups, etc) usually have a dedicated channel for promotion, so I don't see the problem.
But if it's a server dedicated to a single game, then it really doesn't make sense to ask to promote other games there.

If you have a server for a specific game, the problem is that most of the people who come to promote it aren't actually members of the community, but rather people who simply want to spam and take advantage of the server's visibility.

In a small community, it wouldn't be a problem, because most users know each other and it's easy to tell when someone is spamming, but in medium to large communities, it's difficult to make that distinction, so it's best to prohibit it.
