Found this game randomly, and I liked the concept. Taking the simple social game that we all know from childhood but twisting it with alien life forms that have their own distinct ways of saying the numbers was fun to follow. Except the ChatGPT ones, man, I could not stand listening to them XD. Maybe if they'd say something interesting or dark that would progress the story forward, or give you interesting clues like interactive objects outside of the main gameplay loop. That could've been cool, but I know they're supposed to be annoying, I just didn't find them fun. Other than that, I was enjoying the scenery and the aliens and it would've been cool to explore the environment if this was a feature to keep the game more engaging and mysterious. Well done!
Thanks for the in-depth feedback! The clankers are a bit divisive. The whole idea was to make this parody where the whole point of them is to be so infuriating that you'd rather launch all of them into space. And a lot of people say that's their favourite part. But of course, at face value, they actually ARE annoying so I can see how that can sour the experience from a purely ludic perspective.
If we consider the story as the main character driven insane by the increasingly irritating and weird species, I do think the clankers are an important stepping stone in this downward spiral. But yeah the point is that you should feel the way you did about them, it just doesn't really land for everyone.
We've been thinking about exploring the space early on but we threw out the idea because we thought it's best to focus on the core so we could get that as good as possible. I think that's generally a good choice in a game jam. No unneccessary filler, just focus on counting down one number after the other, exac- uh sorry, I'm snapping out of it. Thanks a lot again! I'm really glad you liked the environment we built. It was a bit of an experiment with drawing all the lighting into the textures by hand so I'm glad it's working for people!
I've been annoyed by myself recording these sentences. I get it, but yeah, it's basically part of the design. Totally understandable though that this part of the design can actually feel frustrating. They just talk so so much.
WTH why did this game rank so low in enjoyment? I was really rooting for this one.
Thank you truly, but we're quite happy with our ratings. Even that category is still in the top 7% of all submissions!
I loved this game so much, if this doesn't place to twenty, I don't know what will. The art style and the sound effects all fit together so well, it was extremely polished and had a finished feel to it. At first, I thought it was going to be easy but then it got so complicated and there were so many great ideas. This is a game jam masterpiece.
I also rated ten stars out of five. It was that good.
Thank you for the kind words! We're so happy that you liked it :)
Thank you so much, means a lot!
Genuinely funny game, made me laugh out loud multiple times. When I first booted up the game, I enjoyed the zen music in the first level, I did not expect the hand alien, and it just keep on giving new alien varieties! The voice acting is amazing, the art is fantastic, the idea was pretty simple but the complexity is enhanced through the different alien species! A well made and well polished game, this is the first all 5 I have given out in the jam!!
I HATE THE ROBOT! I HATE THE ROBOT! I HATE THE ROBOT! I HATE THE ROBOT! I HATE THE ROBOT! I HATE THE ROBOT! I HATE THE ROBOT! I HATE THE ROBOT! I HATE THE ROBOT! I HATE THE ROBOT!
Thank you so much! We feel very honored :)
We may have created it but believe me when I say, we hate it too
Excellent work. Impressive even for an experienced and large team.
Thanks a lot. It was also great fun for everybody!
I'm gonna give this an ölö out of ölö! Eerm, ahem, sorry, 5 out of 5, for creativity! Super fun concept, and I could see this being a fun party game to play with friends!
Thank you for the kind words and rating!
Also, woah, that'd go so hard, like everyone's taking on a different species role and one has to flag mistakes or something, IRL? Gotta do that some time!
That's actually a great idea. Could be done with a Web App (like a lobby and share code) or via a discord bot or ofc even an irl set of cards which contains the counting rules for the species and gets randomly assigned, plus one becomes the coach. Or there is no coach and people can call each other out, maybe even getting rewarded for counting wrong with nobody noticing. Or they can make custom species for custom counting rules because the replayability is somewhat low.
Thanks for the input!
Nah, my entire team replayed your game! We especially liked being huddled around the computer together shouting what we thought the right answer was! Super fun!
10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5.... 5/5!
Best game, truly creative
Aww thank you so much!
I have dyscalculia. Thank you for creating my own personal hell.
Oh dang, hope you still had some fun with it? :0
so gööd!!! Great job keeping the pace moving quickly! I can see this getting in the video because of how well rounded and genuinely fun it is. I was charmed since beginning when you said "even an idiot could do that" and I immediately blew him up and failed.
Hahaha that gave all of us in the team a good chuckle!
Glad to hear it :) Do you have any thoughts about working in a medium sized jam team like this? I always struggle to have quick iteration on a team of more than 2-3 people when ideas start to clash. cheers!
Hm you definitely have to organize things a bit more, even before the jam starts, if your team becomes bigger.
For our ideation phase, we pretty much did the same as usual: We start just chatting about the theme and different interpretations of it in an open round and then we all go into our own corner of the miro board and each person writes down ideas within up to 15 minutes. The thing we did differently this time was that everyone was only allowed to write down up to 2 ideas. Rather than ideas, these were supposed to be a bit more like game concepts with a little more thought put behind it.
And then we went ahead and explained ourideas to each other in vc, taking turns. Once all ideas were clearly explained, we went ahead and voted on a difficulty vs awesomeness matrix, taking the average of all the votes on both axes. We then evaluated the top themes a bit more closely on various other scales and it became clear fairly quickly that we could all rally behind one of the concepts. There were other great ones too but this was the one that seemed really feasible while also sounding like a lot of fun stuff could be made with it. We then clarified any open questions and varying interpretations of details and discussed it in the subset of people who'd do design and programming tasks. Then we split the tasks, but it became clear that it would be good if the initial prototype should just be built by one single person (Jonas) while others took on some other tasks like making an art moodboard or setting up some prefab objects for later or went to bed. That helped because then on the next, first proper day, we had a solid base that everyone could work on.
Generally, not everyone was always there at the same time so quite often we worked in groups of 3-5 people rather than having all 8 members of the team present. That made these work sessions pretty managable and chill.
For these availability hours, we always set up a kind of time table on miro where everyone drags boxes to the times they think they'll surely be present. That kind of visualization helps a lot, especially when, like in our case with one of our programmers, multiple time zones are involved.
We also all have experience working with at least some others in the team. So I guess that probably helps.
I hope this is useful to you :)
Thanks so much Yän, this is incredibly useful to understand! I'm interested in trying this type of organized approach with bigger teams in future game jams :o
Really creative concept! I loved all the different ways the characters could count, and all very fitting (especially that AI one lol). Each little cutscene was also funny and charming, and the voice acting was peak. I think it would've been nice if we could click a button if they got it correct as well, just for some QOL (so a yes and no button for each character). This could help speed things up, as a lot of the time is spent waiting for the next number if they said it correctly. This could also help skip through the super long "AI" voice line haha.
Otherwise, super creative and really well executed! Had a lot of fun, especially when mixing all the different characters together and trying to remember all of their languages! And absolutely loved the explosion effect/animation when calling characters out! Congrats to everybody who worked on this great game!
Thank you very much for playing and commenting!
Yeah we've been thinking about that as some rounds can feel a bit slow. At the same time, getting mad at the AI overexplaining and taking super long with it is part of the intended uhh "emotional journey" so to speak. But I'm still thinking about whether a button to skip pauses *after* a character is done talking / signing could make sense. Or perhaps if you press the button while they're already talking, they'll start talking over each other which is honestly also really fitting for those voice AIs... Worth considering...
Glad you liked the mixed levels, they're also my favourites!
Oh, also that explosion effect was such a last-minute addition, like we had an effect from an asset pack but only in the last hour found out that it was using some shaders that weren't visible in webgl. So we scrapped it and I quickly threw this one together from assets I had made for my other game, Glitcheon. Having those graphics around came in clutch in the end lol
The skip or correct button is a great suggestion.
Thanks for the great feedback!
GRUNT GRUNT GRUNT GRUNT GRUNT! :D
(art is amazing wow)
You're amazing! Thank you! *grunts*
ölö schmölö! This is a crazy team for a game jam, and the result was amazing. Great job guys
My only feedback is that there are actually 4 states of matter, not 3 (:
Thank you for playing and commenting, glad you liked it!
You out-ocomplod the ocomplo! I actually thought about plasma for a while too but then thought "most people won't think of that". It would be very in character for this species though to be pedantic like that haha so maybe we'll change it to be a version of "4" in a post jam version.
Ohh, great catch! Solid, liquid, gas, plasma. Exaaaacly. Thanks for pointing that one out.
Best entry yet! ölö/ölö stars!
Thanks ö löt!
Just AWESOME! A fun gameplay, great voice acting, very cool design, kudos to you guys!! 10, 9, ölö, smölö.. oh no!
Thanks, but... *Presses your button*
Immaculate art, just top-tier. I love the 3d space with 2d sprites, my game for last year’s GMTK followed this aesthetic aswell. Gameplay is super simple, yet you made it so funny that it becomes really enjoyable, specially the AI counting reference. Excelent game!
Certainly, we kept developing this game smoothly. Thank you very much and great you got the AI reference. It was funny voicing an AI to not use AI. Taking the Ai's job away as a human.
Honestly thank you, very sweet. I feel like this 3d and 2d mix makes it easier for a team with many artists to collab. And 3d characters and animations just take so much time in a jam. With 2d we could do many characters. While the 3d environment allows for some cool cutscene camera angles.
ölö / ölö!
Absolute banger! I had so much fun playing this game! I would absolutely pay for this.
So far, my clear favorite. It's crazy what you achieved in such a short amount of time.
Keep it up!
Thank you so much for the high praise and the GRUNT GRUNT GRUNT GRUNT GRUNT / GRUNT GRUNT GRUNT GRUNT GRUNT rating!
great game!! love the Klei Entertainment style graphics and the entire concept of the clankers is so hilarious
Thank you so much! We just HAD to get the clankers in, even though it hurt us a little lol
Yo absolute cinima
exactly
Simple yet super creative idea and I really liked all the different challenges of each species, especially when they all come together. Also great world building and very well executed, 5/5 all round. Would be good if they started speeding up more towards the end to make it harder. The nose bros were the hardest for me, I couldn't reliably count them above 5 so I just went on if it sounded shorter than the last one. Maybe the final boss could be a species with their own language and you have to remember the order after failing and restarting a bunch of times. Great work!
Thank you very much for the detailed feedback and ideas!
It's so interesting to me, some people have no trouble live-counting the Grunzers at all and others find them the hardest. Great job still making it through!
We actually early on did think we should create an alien language and maybe a translation table but didn't get there in the end. Would be really cool and right on theme with the space stuff though!
We also talked about speeding things up the lower the numbers get but I think the sequencing code got a lil complicated towards the end so we didn't do that, even though I do think it would be cool! Especially with some of the species definitely getting quite a lot easier around 5.
Level 3 is too annoying, I don't have a current logic to know who is correct and who is wrong.
Anyway, this game's Artwork are EXCELLENT! The details are richly executed.
Thanks for playing a game. If you want to give it another try to see what happens in later levels (your progress should still be unlocked), here's a tip: The clankers either say a number while they speak or they just ramble and talk about counting without actually mentioning a number. If they don't say a number, they are definitely wrong and you have to press their button. If they say a number, they'll usually say "I'll say" or something like that. For the number that they mention that they're saying, you have to check if that's the current number in the sequence. If not, also press their button.
But if that sounds too annoying, you can also load the game, press Unlock All Levels on the level select screen and just start with level 4 :)
Also, thank you very much for the praise regarding our art <3
